Paleontology Field Trip
"Mrs. Van Kuren's class learned about Paleontology, rocks and fossils with some hands-on activities! They searched through ice for fossils, they dug up bones and completed dinosaur skeletons, and excavated cookies for all the chocolate chips they could find! We visited the Buffalo Museum of Science for their Paleontology day! We saw a show about fossils, created dinosaur masks, put together dinosaur skeletons and explored the museum! We even got to meet Stanley the baby dinosaur!"
WEB Wednesday: Consistency
6th Grade W.E.B. -
This month's 6th grade WEB lesson was called Brain Stress. Students were given time to identify different things that caused them stress in their lives and then wrote them down on different balloons. Students then played a game called Balloon Bash and talked about ways to deal with, handle or avoid stressors in their lives. The message that we were given was that sometimes we get a lot of balloons in the air and the stress from all of them builds up. But if we are able to handle one stressor at a time CONSISTENTLY, we can avoid stress and stay healthy.
7th Grade W.E.B. -
The 7th grade participated in an activity called "In A Pickle." Students will explore choices and consequences and play the game, "In A Pickle" to reflect on many different choices we have in life. After that, students will make their own paper "Fortune Teller" which will focus on responsibility, good choices, problem solving and healthy habits.
8th Grade W.E.B. -
The 8th grade class watched a video about decision making the played a Jeopardy game. The 8th graders learned that developing consistency in making good decisions is an incredibly important life skill. Good decision making is actually a habit that can be developed over time. The choices we make can affect our health, our safety, our relationships with family, friends and others, how we spend our time and our overall well-being.
Charlie & the Chocolate Factory
This year's musical was a huge success! One of our 8th graders, Samantha Schilling knocked it out of the park in her lead role as Charlie Bucket. Charlie Bucket was one of the main characters in this musical. Charlie was an imaginative child with a knack for making something out of nothing. Charlie had big dreams of winning the golden ticket and Samantha brought this character and their dream to life on the stage.
The middle school had 35 students who performed in this fantastic musical this year! We are so proud of our DMS students and the talent they showcased in this year's musical rendition of Charlie & The Chocolate Factory!

New York State Assessments
Dear Depew Middle Families:
I hope this letter finds you readying for some warmer weather and seeing more signs of spring! Below you will find some details for the upcoming New York State Assessments in English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science (Grade 8 only) at Depew Middle School.
In response to both educator and family feedback, the Board of Regents has limited the number of days of student testing on the Grades 3-8 English Language Arts, Grades 3-8 Mathematics, and Grade 8 Science to two (2) sessions for each assessment. Assessment administration dates for Depew Middle students are as follows:
NYS Assessment
English Language Arts 6,7,8
Monday, April 7th and Tuesday, April 8th
Mathematics 6,7,8
Monday, April 28th and Tuesday, April 29th
Science 8
Thursday May 8th
These NYS Assessments provide us with valuable information about each student, about our school, and about our academic programming. These assessments also let us know what areas we have done well in and what areas we need to grow in as a school. The state uses this data to determine our school’s academic performance. This information is also a factor used to help our school district plan professional development offerings to faculty and staff over the summer and throughout the school year. All this data will help us to better educate your child.
As these NYS Assessment dates approach, please offer words of encouragement to your child. Let them know that they have worked hard this year and encourage them to do their best. Also, try to keep discussions about these assessments casual and non-confrontational. Your child’s teachers, counselors, and administrators are always available to answer any questions you or your child may have.
For these NYS Assessments, make sure your child has a good night’s sleep. See that they dress comfortably, arrive at school on time, and have a wholesome breakfast. A nutritional breakfast is provided each day in our cafeteria free of charge. We will make sure students have all the necessary materials for these assessments.
Your DMS team looks forward to partnering with our parents and students to raise the number of DMS students taking the NYS Assessments this year. Please feel free to reach out to your child’s teachers, counselor or myself with any questions.
Sincerely,
Bernadette Krumpek
Depew Middle School Principal
