We are so grateful to have had our MHS Alumni come back to talk to our current students about their institutions and their time in college! We had students representing the Class of 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 from colleges both near and far!

Searching for Scholarships? Searching for Scholarships?

At this point in the year our seniors may find yourself with some more time to look into scholarships. As we head into the winter, we will see more and more opportunities becoming available for the Class of 2026. Please read on to find out some ways that we encourage you to search for scholarships that you can apply for.

SchooLinks

We will be updating SchooLinks (Check out the link under Finances and then Scholarship Matching) with scholarship information in the next few weeks. Watch for more information in upcoming newsletters!

The Virtual Paying For College Page

Found in the Virtual CCRC is a room that provides many resources about how to pay for college! Extensive information and a variety of links can help you focus your search.

The CCRC Website

On the right hand side, select “scholarships” and then use the sub-tabs that appear to continue your search! Pay special attention to the Scholarships Guaranteed to go to MHS Students - though the majority of these do not open until the spring, you can start planning to apply for those you are eligible for now!

The financial aid office at colleges you are considering

After you have applied to your future school, look into their scholarship options for prospective or admitted students. Some scholarships are automatic based on specific factors that are a part of your application, but there are almost always more options that you can find and apply to separately after you have been admitted. Many of these can be discovered in your student portal after you receive access. Connect with your admissions representatives and ask them where you can find these opportunities!

Your library

Sometimes local scholarships will be advertised at your library, check to see if there are any options available for you.

Foundations, religious or community organizations, local businesses, or civic groups

Being a part of an organization offers another opportunity to be connected to potential scholarships. Be sure to ask specifically as you may not see advertisements – stay aware, and ask questions!

Organizations related to your field of interest

If you know what you plan to study, look into organizations (including professional associations) that are a part of that field as they may have opportunities to support you as you work toward that specific career path.

Ethnicity-based organizations

Organizations that support your specific ethnicity or unique background situation could have scholarship opportunities.

Your employer or your parents’ employers

Ask at your workplace and have your parents check their workplace for scholarships that might not be well advertised but do exist.

Remember, if you ever find a scholarship that asks you to pay a fee in order to apply, consider that to be a large red flag. Scholarships will not require a financial contribution as part of their application process.

As a reminder - the FAFSA and CSS Profile will provide you access to need based financial aid. The CSS is available for those schools that allow or require their students to use it (see list here). Once completed, the information will be transmitted to the colleges you add to your list. The offer of financial aid will come from each college directly, the FAFSA itself is not an offer of aid.

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

Completing the FAFSA, Alternative Aid Application, or a waiver, is an Illinois State Graduation REQUIREMENT!

Class of 2026: The 26-27 FAFSA is open! Keep in mind that each contributor (student and one or both parents or stepparent, depending upon circumstances) will require their own Studentaid.gov ID, available here. This should be created at least 3 days before completing the FAFSA.

Every Wednesday, our ISAC representative Denver Keske is available in person at MHS to work with our students and parents, right here in our CCRC! She is also available virtually at many other times. Please see the ISAC Room in the MHS Virtual CCRC to find her scheduling links!

Remember that about 270 undergraduate institutions also require the CSS Profile, which also opened on October 1. It is crucial that our students not miss their financial aid deadlines, which will vary by institution and application round.

If you haven’t yet, we strongly encourage you to look at the resources in our Paying For College virtual room. In this space you can also access our FAFSA page for helpful information on completing your FAFSA. We also have access to past presentations (if you missed them) in our Resource Library.

Please review THIS DOCUMENT for more information about this Public Act. Check out our FAFSA Mandate FAQ to find some answers to frequently asked questions.
