Decatur Community,

Did you get that break that you deserved? I definitely enjoyed the sound of silence and the brief opportunity to put responsibilities aside. I even got to watch a movie for the first time in a while. My favorite all-time Christmas movie is A Christmas Story. I love narration. This past week, I watched a movie that definitely stole the concepts of A Christmas Story but added an 80s twist. The movie was called 8 Bit Christmas, and the retelling was from an adult telling about his youthful desire to receive a Nintendo for Christmas. It hit home. I will never forget elementary school days of wishing for games like Mike Tyson's Punchout, Double Dribble, and The Legend of Zelda, all in 8 bit glory. Nothing will ever match A Christmas Story in my heart, but it was an unexpected and pleasant surprise for a former 80s kid.

Now, it's time to get back to business. We return from Thanksgiving Break with three and a half weeks of school to go. It makes for a very focused and intense December, only 15 days of classes left before we move on to Finals.

Important? To be sure. But don't forget to enjoy the stretch, enjoy the people around you, and take a bit of time to watch a festive movie or two with family and friends.

SHOUTOUTS

It was a short week, but I a going to throw out a few shoutouts.

Shoutout to juniors Jenna Fortin and Makadyn Ketterl (pictured) and senior Dani Weyeneth. These three ladies have been taking the Refereeing class that we started offering this year. Last Monday, the girls were able to officiate for the first time in an actual game. No matter how much you play a sport, it is a different world when you are officiating. It was a great experience for them.

Shoutout to the first real snow for the Azada family. The Azada's got a small taste of snow a few weeks ago, but this was far more legitimate. What a great experience to experiences your first Thanksgiving with your first real snow. On top of that, double shoutout, as they got their first car as well.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

Red Devil Ready

It was a short week, but a Thanksgiving week that left me with a lot of time to ponder things to be thankful for!

Thankful for the opportunity to see family, even if for a very brief time.

Thankful for a staff that I enjoy seeing every day, people that I care about deeply.

Thankful that staff is full.

Thankful that staff is so positive.

Thankful for the best group of substitute teacher in the state.

Thankful for a student body to be proud of. Halloween Clean-Up, The Veterans Day Program, and the Senior Citizens' Thanksgiving were all areas where are students shined.

Thankful for the opportunities that we are continuing to offer our students.

Thankful for a superintendent and school board that works so hard to provide everything in their power for our students.

Thankful for a community that supports the school and that has embraced me as the principal.

Thankful that I am going to make the playoffs in Gehring's Fantasy Football League. (At least I hope)

Thankful for the small town in western Kansas that made me homesick after being gone for only two days. That's right, Oberlin is home.

Thankful for the bright future that I see ahead of us here in Oberlin.

Breaks over. Let December and the holiday movie marathon begin!

Until next week,

Jeremy Holloway
