Connections within our community and beyond
Dear Families, students and staff,
At St Brigid’s College, we are proud to offer a diverse range of clubs, groups, co-curricular, and extension opportunities for our students. These experiences are central to nurturing a strong culture of inclusion, ensuring that every student feels connected, supported, and inspired. We believe that students should enjoy coming to school, and our staff consistently go above and beyond to create meaningful opportunities for engagement.
A wonderful example of this commitment is our upcoming College musical. This production highlights the generosity, talent, and collaboration of our staff, students, and families. It provides not only a valuable opportunity for learning and growth but also fosters a strong sense of joy and community spirit.
Our first musical in 17 years, The Little Mermaid Jr, is already generating considerable excitement across the College. Performances will be held on the evenings of Thursday 6th, Friday 7th and Saturday 8th August, with ticket sales commencing at the beginning of Term 3.
I extend my sincere thanks to Ms Janine Walsh, Mrs Sarah Hamilton, Mrs Naomi Pulham, and Mrs Catherine Wade for their outstanding leadership and dedication to this production throughout 2026. Their commitment has been instrumental in bringing this ambitious project to life.
We are also pleased to remind families that the College Library is open from Monday to Thursday, 3:30pm to 5:00pm, for students in Years 6 to 12. This provides a valuable space for homework and study, along with access to specialist academic support throughout the week.
Behind every successful student is a supportive family. Thank you for the important role you play in ensuring your child is prepared each day and able to fully engage in their learning and activities. Your partnership is essential to our shared goal of delivering excellence in education.
If your child is not yet involved in a co-curricular activity, I strongly encourage them to explore the opportunities available through student notices or by speaking with their teachers. Our aim is for every student to participate in at least one activity next semester. Students who are actively engaged not only achieve stronger academic outcomes but also experience a greater sense of belonging and enjoyment at school.
In the final week of this term, I will be attending the Global Forum on Girls’ Education in Toronto alongside Mrs Jen Oaten, Principal of Santa Maria College. I will then take a short period of leave to visit St John’s, Newfoundland, a place of historical significance to our community. Our first Mercy Sister, Ursula Frayne, visited St John’s before journeying to Western Australia in 1846, and I look forward to sharing this meaningful experience with you upon my return.
During my absence, Mrs Marsha Pengilly, Deputy Principal of Teaching and Learning, will assume leadership of the College.
Thank you once again for your continued support and commitment to our College community. We value our strong partnership with families and look forward to the many opportunities ahead to celebrate our students’ achievements together.
Kind regards
Mrs Veronica Parker | Principal
College Celebrations
Morning Mass
All families are warmly invited to join us in the College Chapel for our weekly celebration of Mass, which will continue next year commencing at 8:00am every Thursday morning. We look forward to seeing you there.
Faith and Mission
From the Head of Faith and Mission
Over recent weeks, our College community has continued to engage in meaningful opportunities to live out faith through service, prayer, and community connection.
As part of our Christian Service-Learning program, students in Years 10-12 have been generously volunteering their time outside of school hours through initiatives including the upcoming Red Cross Soup Patrol and The Shopfront Cathedral Outreach. These experiences provide valuable opportunities for students to serve others with compassion and dignity while putting their faith into action within the wider community. A special thank you to Ms Bahbah, Mrs Powell, and Miss Lambin for their support and facilitation of these service opportunities.
Last weekend many of our Year 4 students celebrated the Sacrament of Holy Communion, with further celebrations taking place this weekend. We congratulate all students on reaching this significant milestone in their faith journey and thank families and teachers for their support throughout the preparation process. As a community, we continue to keep these students in our prayers during this special and important time.
On Wednesday, a group of Primary Ministry Committee leaders, together with myself and Head of Primary (3-6) Mrs Brunt, attended the Primary School LifeLink Launch. This inspiring initiative highlighted the importance of supporting vulnerable members of the Western Australian community, with the students also meeting His Grace, Archbishop of Perth, Timothy Costelloe (pictured). As part of this initiative, our College will hold a “Scarf and Beanie Day for LifeLink” on Thursday 25 June, with students invited to bring a gold coin donation and wear their favourite scarf or beanie, with their normal school uniform. LifeLink supports a range of social service agencies across Western Australia, assisting individuals and families experiencing hardship and disadvantage.
Finally, our Year 1 students also recently participated in a special liturgy, thoughtfully prepared by Mrs Masella, Mrs McDermott, and Mrs Parker. These opportunities for prayer and reflection continue to nurture the faith life of our youngest students and strengthen their understanding of belonging within our College community. It was wonderful to welcome family members and friends for this Liturgy.
An exciting finish to the term for Faith and Mission awaits with several significant faith and community experiences on the horizon, including the Year 11 Retreat, the Vinnies Winter Sleep-Out, Christian Service-Learning activities, and the Spirit of Mercy Assembly.
These opportunities continue to encourage our students to grow in faith, deepen their understanding of service, and strengthen their connection to the Mercy values that shape our College community.
As always, families and friends of the College are warmly invited to share in the liturgical life of our community. Please see below for upcoming celebrations and opportunities to participate.

Class Focus - Year 3
We would like to take a moment to reflect on what a wonderful and productive time we have had this term. It has been a joy to see the students engage in their learning with enthusiasm, creativity, and curiosity.
This term, our students have been exploring the concept of symmetry through fun and creative, hands-on experiences. Using paint, they created beautiful symmetrical artworks by folding paper to reveal mirrored patterns on each side. This helped them clearly see how shapes and designs can match and reflect. Alongside this, our investigation table provided opportunities for students to experiment with coloured sticks and shapes, encouraging them to build and identify lines of symmetry in a practical and meaningful way. This combination of art and exploration supported students in developing both their mathematical understanding and creativity, and we are so proud of the vibrant work now displayed in our classroom.
Our Primary School Cross Country was a fantastic day filled with energy and excitement! Students challenged themselves to achieve their personal goals while having fun with their friends. It was wonderful to see such encouragement and support for one another throughout the event, making it a very positive and memorable experience for everyone involved.
The Dodgy Bros Incursion was a fun and energetic dodgeball experience for our Years 3–6 students. It was great to see everyone getting involved, working as a team, and enjoying the friendly competition. Students demonstrated positive sportsmanship, encouraged one another, and had lots of laughs along the way. The incursion provided a wonderful opportunity for students to be active, build their teamwork skills, and most importantly, have fun together.
In Science, students explored the concept of melting and how external factors can affect it through a range of engaging, hands-on experiments. They investigated how different materials, such as ice and butter, change when heat is applied and observed the conditions that influence the speed of melting. Through these experiences, students developed their understanding of how temperature and environmental conditions impact different substances, while also strengthening their observation and inquiry skills.

Class Focus - Pre Primary
The Pre-Primary incursion to Swan Valley Cuddly Animal Farm was a highly engaging and memorable experience for students, with strong links to Biological Science and the understanding of living things. The children had the opportunity to interact closely with a range of animals, deepening their awareness of animal needs and characteristics.
They enjoyed holding guinea pigs, bottle feeding goats, and gently patting chickens, ducks, sheep, and rabbits. These hands-on experiences were both exciting and insightful, allowing students to develop empathy for living creatures while making meaningful connections to classroom learning about how animals grow, move, and survive in their environments.

Let's chat with - Jess Martin, Deputy of Pastoral Years 7 to 12
We're two terms in and you may have already met Jess Martin our Deputy Principal of Pastoral Care. Jess Martin’s appointment reflects St Brigid’s College’s ongoing commitment to pastoral excellence and student wellbeing. Her compassionate leadership and dedication to service enriches the community and support students to flourish both personally and academically.
A Calling to Make a Difference
For Jess, the decision to join St Brigid’s College was guided by a strong sense of purpose. She was drawn to the opportunity to work in a community where she could make a meaningful and positive impact on the lives of young people. This aspiration reflects her belief that schools are not just places of learning, but spaces where students should feel safe, valued, and supported as they grow.
A Journey Grounded in Care and Connection
Throughout her professional journey, Jess has remained focused on supporting young people and fostering environments that prioritise wellbeing. Her experiences have shaped a leadership approach grounded in empathy and understanding, ensuring that every student feels respected and empowered. This dedication to student-centred care underpins her work and continues to guide her vision for pastoral leadership.
A Compassionate and Service-Driven Leadership Style
Jess describes her leadership style as compassionate and service-driven, with a strong emphasis on building meaningful relationships across the college community. She believes that fostering a genuine sense of belonging is key to enhancing student wellbeing and engagement.
Her approach is closely aligned with the Mercy values that are central to St Brigid’s College—respect, justice, compassion, courage, service, and hospitality. These values inform her daily practice and decision-making, ensuring that her leadership not only supports individuals but also strengthens the collective spirit of the community.
Priorities for Pastoral
Jess is focused on building strong connections and understanding the unique needs of students across Years 7–12. She is committed to:
- Getting to know students personally, gaining insight into the challenges they may face
- Strengthening pastoral care structures, ensuring programs are responsive, inclusive, and impactful
- Collaborating closely with staff to create an environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive
These priorities reflect her belief that effective pastoral care begins with listening, understanding, and working together.
Supporting the Whole Community
Jess sees her role as one that extends beyond students to include staff and the wider college community. She hopes that every member of St Brigid’s will feel known, valued, and supported. By building on the strong foundation already in place, she aims to celebrate what is working well while contributing to positive and meaningful growth.
Life Beyond the College
Outside of her professional role, Jessica values balance and wellbeing in her own life. She enjoys Pilates, tennis, shopping, and spending time at the beach, all of which help her recharge and maintain a healthy perspective.
A Message to Students
Jess shares a simple yet powerful piece of advice for students:
“Be kind to yourself and to others.”
From the Dean of Students - Year 9
Term 2 has been a busy and enriching time for our Year 9 students, offering a range of opportunities that have supported their growth, wellbeing, and future aspirations.
A highlight of the term was the Year 9 Retreat, which provided students with a valuable opportunity to step away from their usual routines and engage in reflection and personal development. Throughout the retreat, students explored the life and legacy of Ursula Frayne and the early Sisters of Mercy in Western Australia, reflecting on the qualities of resilience, courage, compassion, and service that defined their work. Students were encouraged to consider how these values can be lived out in their own lives, while also strengthening their sense of belonging and deepening their understanding of themselves and others. The experience fostered meaningful connections within the year group and reinforced the importance of community.
Some students also proudly represented the College in SSWA Netball, demonstrating teamwork, resilience, and excellent sportsmanship. It was wonderful to see students support one another and embrace the challenge and enjoyment of a competitive sporting environment.
Looking toward future pathways, a number of students participated in TAFE Career Taster programs in Beauty and Nursing, gaining hands-on experience and valuable insights into potential vocational pathways. These experiences encouraged students to explore their interests and begin considering future career directions. Building on this, we look forward to welcoming Murdoch University next Friday for a Career Taster Day, which will further broaden students’ understanding of post-school options and inspire their aspirations.
Our Year 9 students are to be commended for their consistent effort and commitment to their studies throughout the term. They have been working diligently and achieving positive results across their subjects, demonstrating resilience and an increasing sense of independence.
With the three-week break fast approaching, this is an important time for students to rest, recharge, and reflect on their achievements and experiences from the first semester. We encourage all students to make the most of this break and return refreshed for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead in Term 3.
We are proud of the continued growth of our Year 9 cohort and look forward to another successful term ahead.
Ms Lauren Ierace-Bowers | Dean of Students, Year 9
Focus.... on VET and Work Place Learning
St Brigid’s College has proudly celebrated the success of our Workplace Learning and Vocational Education programs, providing students with valuable opportunities to explore future career pathways and develop practical industry skills. A highlight has been the participation of 31 Year 11 and 5 Year 12 students in their first two-week Workplace Learning placement this year, across a broad range of industries including pharmacy, laboratory assistance, animal care, aged care, education, hospitality, real estate, hairdressing, aquaculture, and plumbing. Through these placements, students have gained firsthand experience in professional environments, whilst building essential employability skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, organisation, customer service, initiative, and workplace responsibility. These experiences not only have increased students’ confidence but also strengthened their understanding of future career opportunities and workplace expectations.
We are also proud to share that 21 students are currently studying off campus while completing their Year 11 and 12 studies, undertaking one of nine different nationally recognised qualifications. Students are engaged in pathways including Allied Health, Preparation for Nursing, Animal Care, Autonomous Operations, School-Based Education Support, Fitness, and Makeup. Already, students have been developing practical industry skills such as medical terminology, patient care, blood pressure testing, animal handling, spray tanning, and operating autonomous vehicles in simulated environments, whilst others have commenced placements in educational settings. These students are thriving as they successfully combine academic learning with vocational training and industry experience.
We are excited to celebrate three students who have been accepted into Aboriginal School-Based Traineeships in Hospitality, Hairdressing, and Real Estate. These traineeships combine formal training days with weekly workplace placements, allowing students to gain valuable hands-on experience while continuing their senior school studies.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the many employers and community partners who generously supported our students throughout these programs and are looking forward to continuing this partnership. If we have any families who run businesses and would be able to accommodate students in Semester Two, please contact Mrs Carolynne Troy.
After school we have continued to build partnerships with our families and we welcomed Fremantle Education Centre and Health Science Hub, who presented exciting Certificate III and IV pathway opportunities for our future 2027 Year 11 and 12 cohorts. We thank the many families who attended these sessions. The success of these programs continues to be strengthened through the valued partnership between families, staff, training providers, and industry. Finally, our Year 10 students attended the annual Careers Expo at the Convention Centre, where they explored a wide range of future study, training, and employment opportunities.
What a start to 2026 in the Vocational Education and Training pathway!
Ms Janine Walsh | Director of Academics
Senior Students Immersing in the Arts
Last Friday evening, our Years 10, 11 and 12 Drama students experienced a very special final performance of Barking Gecko’s “The Stones”, a deeply moving production about the challenges youths face when the right choice isn’t made.
What made this evening even more special was that Barking Gecko performed one last show for purely our group of students. To top off this inspiring show students and staff then had the wonderful opportunity to have a long discussion with the cast, about both the production, its acting challenges and the actors' careers and acting process.
From all of our Drama students we say a very big, thank you @barkinggeckoarts
