Hello Navigators,

Parent teacher conferences begin tomorrow October 17th and continue through Monday October 24th. These will all be minimum days and dismissal will be at 12:25 PM. Please make sure you have scheduled a conference for each of your students. This time is so valuable to partner with teachers, create plans to support your student and collaborate to problem solve.

Red Ribbon Week is Tuesday October 25th through the 31st. See this flyer for all the amazing and fun spirit days!

Monster Mash Dance! October 28th from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM. The evening will include food, games, a costume contest, dancing and more! Hope to see you there!

We will need volunteers so please use sign up genius to let us know how you can help!

As part of our Leader in Me program we are conducting service learning projects. Currently, we are conducting a Food Drive to support local families. Our third grade students have chosen to support our local furry friends. They are collecting gently used towels to donate to the Oceanside Humane Society. The information is here and you can send in a gently used towel by October 19th to help this cause.

Please join our PTO this year. The PTO does so much for our school and we do need your help. We know schedules are busy and there is no obligation for attending meetings or volunteering. We hope you will join to be a member and assist when/if you can.

This year every Wednesday will be a Spirit Day at Nichols. Wear blue or wear your Nichols gear. Due to a scheduling conflict the PTO was unable to sell Spirit Wear last week. Look for them after school. We will work to get consistent days and times.

Oceanside Unified School District has partnered with Care Solace to help families in need of mental health support. This services can help quickly find available services. We are so thrilled with out STEAM program. STEAM stands for Science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. We have Ms. Goulet who teaches the STEM parts of STEAM and Mr. Wyman who teaches Art. Check out the STEAM Newsletter for the latest information.

The Oceanside Unified School District is committed to maintaining safe and secure campuses in order to promote the health, and well-being of our students, families, and staff. The following prevention practices are in place to support the safety and security of our school.

• In September, all of our staff will participate in an Active Assailant training where we will learn and practice response protocols for keeping our students safe in the unlikely situation involving an armed intruder.
• Our school regularly practices disaster and evacuation drills with our students and staff, including a minimum of two lockdown drills per year.
• OUSD partners with the Oceanside Police Department to provide four dedicated School Resource Officers (SRO) who are trained members of the National Association of School Resource Officers. Our SROs are stationed at schools within the district, and are regular visitors on our campus. The SROs will respond to any safety issues that arise at any of our schools.
• OUSD employs a highly trained team of over 45 Campus Security who serve our middle schools, high schools, and Surfside Academy.
• This summer, our administrative and custodial team led by the Student Services Coordinator, SRO(s) and OPD SWAT Officers conducted a comprehensive campus security walkthrough.
• Our school has the Raptor Visitor Management System which tracks all visitors or volunteers entering campus. Authorized visitors are then presented with a clearly marked identification badge.
• Our school has a comprehensive Crisis Response Plan that is reviewed annually with all staff, and placed in all classrooms, that details how to safely respond to specific emergency situations.
