Week 10 Updates

End of Quarter 1
Quarter 1 Update for Parents: A Time to Check In
We’ve officially reached the end of Quarter 1, which means 25% of the school year is already behind us. This is a key moment to pause, reflect, and check in on your child’s academic and personal progress.
Attendance: Every Day, On Time, Ready to Learn
Our school-wide attendance rate is currently below 90%, and we are seeing 25–40 students tardy each day. We must improve in this area—attendance is directly linked to student success.
We understand that some families are dealing with immigration-related challenges. Please know:
Students are safe at school.
If immigration concerns are affecting your child’s ability to attend, we ask that you reach out to school administration.
We want to understand your situation and work with you to identify any supports or options available—ensuring your child has what they need at school and at home to thrive.
Let’s work together to make sure every student is here on time, every day, ready to learn.
Parent-Teacher Conferences – October 27th
We encourage all families to sign up for a parent-teacher conference. These meetings are a valuable way to connect with your child’s teachers, discuss their progress, and work together on goals for the rest of the school year.
Checking Grades & Progress
Now is a great time to check in on how your child is doing academically. Make sure you have access to:
TalkingPoints – for two-way communication with staff
Parent Portal – to view grades and attendance
Teacher emails – to connect with educators directly
Understanding Grades – CPS Grading Scale
CPS measures student progress using the following grade codes:
A – Substantially exceeds the standard
B – Exceeds the standard
C – Meets the standard
D – Less than acceptable performance on the standard
F – Does not meet the standard
/ – Indicates an area not to be graded at this time
Grades are based on mastery of standards, not just effort or behavior. For example, a "C" means your child is meeting grade-level expectations.
Benchmark Grades: 2nd, 5th, and 8th
These grade levels are especially important for end-of-year promotion decisions. If your child struggled during Quarter 1, now is the time to refocus and work toward improvement to avoid the risk of mandatory summer school.

Immigration Enforcement Updates
At Jungman, every student belongs. We want to reassure you that all children have the right to a free public education—no matter their immigration status or their family’s immigration status. This right is protected by the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Plyler v. Doe (1982).
💙 How CPS Protects Our Families
No matter what is happening at the federal level, Chicago Public Schools remains committed to protecting our students, families, and staff. In line with the Illinois Trust Act and Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance, CPS:
✅ DOES NOT ask about your or your child's immigration status
✅ WILL NOT work with federal immigration enforcement agencies like ICE
✅ DOES NOT share student records with ICE or federal officials (unless there is a court order or parent/guardian consent)
✅ WILL NOT allow ICE or federal agents into our schools unless they have a criminal judicial warrant signed by a federal judge.
School leaders and staff have received training and clear guidance to ensure these protections are followed in every CPS school. This includes Operational Plans for student, family and staff safety if any law enforcement agency, including ICE, comes directly to the school. Given the nature of these situations, however, it’s important to recognize that events may unfold differently each time. There may be moments when school staff must make real-time decisions that best align with CPS guidelines and directives. We will always act in the best interest of student safety while remaining within those boundaries.
- To the extent possible, no law enforcement officials, including ICE will be allowed entry without proper consent and only for previously approved purposes such as scheduled classroom visits, community outreach, or other authorized activities.
- If there is law enforcement activity within a block of the school, and we are notified, the school will go into a soft lockdown. During a soft lockdown, no one enters or exits the building, and all classes continue as usual inside.
- If law enforcement activity occurs directly outside the school, especially during arrival or dismissal, we will immediately initiate a soft lockdown, bringing students and families inside. No one will be allowed to leave until an “all clear” is given and it is safe to do so.

📲 Stay Connected with TalkingPoints!
New Family Communication System!
As we’ve discussed since the beginning of the year, our school is transitioning away from REMIND and moving toward TalkingPoints as our primary communication platform with families.
Purpose:
This shift is about creating a more equitable, inclusive, and accessible communication system for all families. TalkingPoints allows automatic translation, easier two-way communication, and direct alignment with our Aspen data — ensuring every family can stay informed and connected.
Safe Space for Learning:
- We know this is new for everyone — including teachers! Over the next 1–2 weeks, we’ll be exploring and learning together. It’s okay to ask questions, make mistakes, and share what’s working (or not). This is a judgment-free zone for professional growth.
- Please be patient as we work through initial setup challenges and troubleshooting. During this learning period, we’ll continue to use email as our backup method of communication, and families are encouraged to do the same.
- Our collective goal is to ensure every student’s family is informed, supported, and heard — and this transition will help us get there.
- Below you’ll find directions (available in multiple languages) explaining how to sign up for TalkingPoints — the messaging system we use to communicate with families.
Important: TalkingPoints is automatically connected to the contact information we have in Aspen.
➡️ If you are not receiving messages, please make sure your phone number is correct by calling or emailing Ms. Jessica at jmoreno83@cps.edu.
Why download the app?
-
It’s free and gives you access to more features.
-
You can easily send and receive messages from your child’s teacher or school administration.
-
You can see translations instantly in your preferred language.
Don’t want the app?
No problem! You will still receive text messages from the school — just be sure your contact information in Aspen is up to date.
