Who needs a Medicare PDP?

Who needs a Medicare PDP?

People who:

  • Have Original Medicare (Part A + Part B) Medicare doesn’t include drug coverage, so a PDP fills that gap.

  • Take ongoing prescriptions Chronic conditions (diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, COPD, mental health meds, etc.) make PDP coverage financially essential.

  • Want protection from high drug costs PDPs cap exposure through formularies, preferred pharmacies, and catastrophic coverage.

  • Don’t have drug coverage from elsewhere No employer plan, no VA benefits, no retiree plan, no Medicaid → PDP becomes the primary drug coverage.

  • Want to avoid Medicare penalties If someone goes without “creditable drug coverage,” Medicare adds a permanent late‑enrollment penalty. PDP enrollment prevents that.

Who doesn’t need a PDP?

People who already have creditable drug coverage, such as:

  • VA benefits

  • TRICARE

  • Employer or union plans

  • Some retiree plans

  • Certain Medicare Advantage plans (MAPD) that already include drug coverage

The simplest rule

If someone has Medicare and doesn’t already have creditable drug coverage, they need a PDP.

Quick rule for choosing the “best” PDP in AZ Quick rule for choosing the “best” PDP in AZ

The best PDP is the one that gives the lowest total annual drug cost for the client’s exact medication list — NOT the lowest premium.

Premiums lie. Formularies tell the truth.
