Principals' Message Principals' Message

Harwood High School Families -

As the presence of AI continues to increase exponentially, the discussion and consideration of its role in schools also increases. Last year a committee of educators from across our district developed guidance for HUUSD teachers and students. This was informed by resources such as the VT AI Guidance for Educators and policies from neighboring districts.

As we begin the new school year we want to share HUUSD’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Guidance that came from this committee.

It is important to clarify the scope of the district’s guidance. The guidance primarily addresses the technology products HUUSD provides to students through the district’s Google platform. When the document states that students do not have access to generative AI, it refers specifically to the fact that Google Gemini is not enabled through HUUSD student accounts. It does not mean that students are unable to access publicly available generative AI tools at home or through other personal accounts. This distinction underscores the importance of continued discussion among educators, students, and caregivers about the appropriate and responsible use of these rapidly evolving tools.

There is much for us to continue to consider as educators, caregivers and students as we continually work to strengthen and sustain a rigorous and robust academic program that provides exploration and prepares students with knowledge, understanding, and skills for their next steps. As such, Harwood’s faculty is deeply investigating and exploring the current research and conversations. Here are a few articles, podcasts and resources we’ve been thinking about:

  • Brookings Institute report

  • On the Media podcast

  • Educating Kids in the Age of A.I. | The Ezra Klein Show

As schools across the world move towards being Cell Phone Free, communities are reflecting on the lessons learned as effective and responsible use of technology in general are considered. Here is one example in our region.

The work ahead will continue to require collective collaboration across our larger Harwood community and we are grateful for your engagement.

In partnership,

Meg and Jess

On our new Harwood website we share a bit about us in which we highlight that Harwood is a unique community where we partner rich tradition with powerful innovation to provide a rigorous, robust, and personalized learning environment. During our opening assembly for the 2026-2027 school year we commenced the year with one of Harwood’s rich traditions - Staff Plaid. Mari Pratt, Staff Plaid of 2025-2026 turned the cape over to Jason Reichart who will now take on the responsibility of

  • Wearing the Plaid cape to all Harwood assemblies.

  • Wearing the Plaid cape on Fridays, for at least one half-hour, in a public place.

  • Wearing the Plaid cape to at least one athletic event each season.

  • Doing at least one act of kindness unacknowledged each week for a faculty member, staff member, or administrator who is feeling dispirited.

  • Doing the same for a dispirited student.

This is one of the many ways in which we continually cultivate and maintain a Harwood community where ALL students, staff, and families feel a sense of belonging, pride, and purpose.

Athletics Athletics

This fall we have the largest number of student athletes registered for a fall sport since my arrival. 350 students total - 197 high school and 153 middle school.

Thank you to everyone for your continued efforts to support these large numbers.

Fall season is underway. A few highlights so far:

  • Boys golf, last year's State Champs, is undefeated so far in their match play.

  • Girls soccer has started the year undefeated (3-0) including their win over Colchester - the first regular season win over a division one program.

Welcome back, Harwood! We’re excited to have two nurses supporting our students this year.

Magge Stone, RN is starting her 6th year at Harwood, and Anna Lisa Reynolds, RN is returning after a year away and beginning her 2nd year with us. Anna Lisa will primarily be working with our Middle School students, while both nurses are available to support students across the school as needed.

We have two health offices: one in the middle school that will be open in the morning located next to Jen Dreimiller’s office, and the main health office, located next to the high school counseling office. The high school office will be staffed during the full school day.

Our goal is to provide care and assessment when students need it, while helping them stay in school and engaged in learning whenever possible. We also want to collaborate with parents/care givers to ensure that all students can participate in their education.

Need the Nurse?

Students are welcome to stop by the Health Office with a health concern, question, or just to check in. We’ll assess what’s going on and help students determine what they need to get back to class when they are able.

We are available until 3:30 PM each school day.

Health & Medication Forms

We are currently gathering registration and health paperwork for the school year. Having this information on file helps us provide safer and more efficient care for your student.

When completing registration, please indicate whether you give permission for us to provide your student with the medications listed. Students are not generally permitted to carry medication with them at school, so we keep basic medications available in the Health Office.

If your student carries an inhaler, that is okay! We just need the appropriate documentation on file indicating that they are permitted to carry and use it at school.

Asthma Action Plan
Medication/Self-Carry Documentation

Health needs can change during the school year. If your student develops a new health need or needs medication, an inhaler, or other support at school, please reach out to us so we can help.

Questions or concerns? We’re happy to help!

TA Update TA Update

This week in TA we are focusing on our community service requirement. We will be reviewing the requirements for this year as well as logging any hours completed over the summer. This Info Doc has all of the necessary information. In addition there are links to dozens of possible service organizations as well as specific requests from organizations to partner with students.

We are also spending time building community. This week we will join in an activity with our buddy TA.

The club Fair is on the horizon (9/24). During this week we will also be doing academic check ins as we will be at the halfway mark for quarter 1!

Counseling Counseling

PSATs for Class of 2028

Juniors will have the opportunity to participate in the PSATs at Harwood on October 14th or 15th during the school day. This is a low-stakes opportunity to check out what a standardized exam will be like and potentially qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program. This slideshow has everything you need to know about the PSAT if you want to learn more. If your Junior would like to take the exam, sign up using this Google Form and bring your payment to the School Counseling office by September 18th.

One of the benefits of being back at school is having a delicious, FREE breakfast and lunch available to all students every day. Breakfast for high school students is available from 8:15 - 8:50 and again from 9:55 - 10:00am. For lunch, students have a choice between a salad bar or hot lunch.

Homecoming

Harwood is having our Homecoming Dance on Thursday, October 8th at the Zen Barn in Waterbury. We are seeking parent chaperones to help make this event a success. If you have already completed a background check and would like to help out please contact Ellen Berrings (eberrings@huusd.org). If you have not yet completed this process you can find information on how to do so on the Harwood Unified website on the Apply to Be a Volunteer section. We hope to see some of you there!!

JumpRope is the proficiency scoring program that we use for grades at Harwood. All students and families will receive JumpRope login information next week so that you can track students’ progress in their courses throughout the year. It is important to note that, as courses ramp up at the beginning of the school year, a course will not appear on your dashboard in JumpRope until the first score has been entered by a teacher.

Throughout the year, we will email JumpRope progress reports home that show more detailed information about student progress on our Learning Expectations (the transferable skills that students are practicing in their courses). These progress reports will be emailed home at the midpoint and end of each quarter, and will also prompt conferencing between students and their TA teacher.

If you are looking at JumpRope and have course-specific questions, please email the teacher. If you have general JumpRope questions, reach out to Assistant Principal Jessica Deane, at jdeane@huusd.org.

Extended Learning Opportunities

ELO stands for Extended Learning Opportunities and is in all students’ schedules at Harwood. It is a flexible time where teachers can book students to see them, and students can book to course teachers and other options if they aren’t already booked. Students view and book their ELOs through a program called Adaptive Scheduler. It is each student’s responsibility, with the TA teacher’s support, to ensure that they are booked somewhere for every ELO block.

Students will book their ELOs in TA. More details on high school ELO can be found here.

The main purpose of ELO is to provide students the time for both support and enrichment within their current courses. Depending on the needs of individual students, each student’s ELO blocks over the course of a week could include

  • small group instruction for support or extension in a specific course or skill

  • individual work time

  • clubs, school-wide assemblies, and other activities that support social/emotional wellbeing and community
