HSS Chorus Chronicles

It's time for chorus again at HSS!
What is chorus and who can be in it?
Chorus is an optional opportunity for 3rd and 4th grade students to sing in a group setting. Chorus is a great way to make new friends and share their love of music with like-minded peers. We meet during school hours to practice once a week, one grade level at a time from September until June.
3rd grade meets Tuesday mornings, and 4th grade meets Thursday mornings. Both groups sing from 8:20 to 9:00
Are there performances I can come to?
We have two formal concerts in the year that we share with Mt. Leb's choir 3rd and 4th grade choir. Together, we call ourselves "Double Treble". We have a winter concert in January and a spring concert, in late May or early June. These two concerts are outside of school hours. Concerts are never mandatory, just highly encouraged.
Students also have the opportunity to perform for our Holiday assembly as a combined group, and we have a few smaller performances that will be for one grade or the other. When these or new opportunities come up (i.e. field trips or additional concert opportunities) you will be notified through my monthly newsletter.

Okay, but do they really learn anything? 🤔
Yes! Chorus teaches a lot of useful musical and non-musical skills.
Musically, choir can teach
- Vocal health and technique
- Longer, more complex music
- How to sing in different musical styles and languages
- How to sing in multiple parts
- Reading an octavo score
- Listening skills and critical thinking skills
Non-musically, choir can help kids:
- Practice teamwork and listening skills
- Make new friends and strengthen connections
- Express emotions in a healthy way
- Build resilience and self-confidence
- Build memory and retention skills
- Feel like they have a community
- Practice reading
- Have better mental health (singing can reduce stress and release dopamine)
Chorus at HSS is it's own small community. Not only will the students learn from me, the Lebanon school district is lucky enough to have an accomplished pianist for every choir rehearsal and concert. Dave Chaves is a wonderful pianist and retired music teacher whos playing enriches the choral experience with live, beautiful accompaniment.
This sounds great! How do I sign up?
