Principal's Message
Hello,
I hope everyone was able to enjoy the Labor Day weekend, and we are quickly approaching the first week-long break of the school year. Please take the time to attend our Curriculum Night this evening at 6:30 p.m. This is an event that is designed for our parents to learn more about the information your student will be learning this school year. Because of space considerations, we are asking that students not attend tonight. We are looking forward to seeing you tonight so that you can a feel for the operation and instruction of Decatur High School.
It is taking us a little longer than we anticipated to get the candidates out for the School Leadership Team elections. We will get the information out to parents in a separate message on Friday or Monday, and there will be a week to vote.
I want to personally thank most of our students for their behavior at school, at school events, and in the community. In a recent meeting, I was able to provide comments and ended my presentation by saying that I truly believe that we have a world-class student body and staff to match the community that we are honored to serve.
I would like senior parents to continue to have discussions with students about the senior assassin game. We have witnessed an uptick in seniors coming into the building with goggles on the top of their heads or around their necks, which is a sign of the senior assassin game. In addition, I had reached out to several parents about an incident in the community in which the behavior of our juniors and seniors embarrassed DHS as a school and me personally. Although this was not a school matter, I felt like parents would want to know what occurred and should have conversations with their students about the incident. Again, 99% of our students are making great choices all the time, but we still need to keep moving that closer to 100%.
Thank you in advance for having conversations with your students and their friends about making good decisions at school and in the community.
Sincerely,
Duane Sprull, Ed.D.
Principal
Curriculum night is a time for parents and guardians to meet teachers and learn some basic information about each class in their student’s schedule. Parents and guardians will have the opportunity to walk the schedule and meet the teachers.
Please, before you arrive, ask your student to give you a copy of their schedule, or go into the Parent Portal to print or take a picture of your student’s schedule. The information covered will include:
Course overview
Classroom expectations
Grading and assessment expectations
Avenues for support (tutoring, writing center, WIN time)
Location of resources
How parents/guardians can help
Teacher communication routines
Our hope is that parents and guardians who attend curriculum night will leave equipped to recognize teachers and be knowledgeable about how to support their student's academic success.
DHS Academic Opportunities Information Session
Planning for your child's future? Just want to know what's available to your child? We invite all CSD parents to a Zoom-based information session on September 11th at 6:30 PM to learn about the incredible academic opportunities available at DHS. This is your chance to get a comprehensive overview of our advanced programs, including the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program (DP), the IB Career-related Program (CP), Advanced Placement (AP) Capstone, and our Dual Enrollment (DE) options.
Join us to learn how these programs can help prepare your student for college and beyond.
Inadvertent Data Disclosure
On Aug. 20, a DHS family reported that their student’s emergency contacts had received messages from our student portrait provider inviting them to buy that student’s portraits. An investigation discovered the error that led to emergency contact information being errantly included in student and household contact information sent to the vendor. Upon being notified, the vendor began the process of deleting that information, and all such emergency contact data has been purged from their system. We have also put additional training and workflow requirements in place for the transfer of household contact information to third parties to prevent a similar issue from occurring.
CSD takes our responsibility to protect sensitive student information seriously, and we regret that this incident occurred. If you have further questions about this event, you can email privacy@csdecatur.net.
Important Information about Gifted Review
Each fall semester, the gifted review team looks at existing student data to discuss students’ needs and determine if further evaluation for gifted identification is needed. If you are interested in having the team discuss your child’s needs, you may complete a Recommendation for Review Form (found at the website below) and turn it in to the Gifted & Talented Specialist at your child’s school before Wednesday, October 1. No additional information is needed. The Gifted & Talented Specialist for DHS is Ms. Eleta Andrews. For more detailed information about the review process and to obtain a copy of the Recommendation for Review Form, please contact the Gifted & Talented Specialist for your school at eandrews@csdecatur.net or visit the following website.
