Announcing the Winners!
Copies of the winning bookmark designs were made for all students in the artists' grade level.
Reading All Stars - Hall of Fame
Our school was inducted into the Greenville Drive Reading All Stars Hall of Fame for its participation over the past four years. This literacy-based program annually awards students who read 5 books within five weeks with a ticket to the Drive's celebratory Reading All Stars Baseball Game held in the spring. Book Club Update
Closing the chapter on our school's first book club! Our 4th-grade lunchtime book club completed the spring meetings, during which we discussed The Magic Treehouse: Civil War on Sunday. May the many participants who expressed their disappointment that it was over consider joining our Battle of the Books team next year (see the Upcoming section at the end of the newsletter for the book titles). Caught Reading
A fire drill mid-check-out offered fifth-graders in the library some unexpected outdoor reading time.
Pumpkin Jack Observation
Inspired by the read-aloud, Pumpkin Jack by Will Hubbell, we began observing the pumpkin life cycle in the library at Halloween. After many months of watching the pumpkin decompose, the jack-o'-lantern finally began sprouting post-spring break. Ms. McGowan and one of her students, Neymar, planted it in our school garden in hopes of new pumpkins in the fall.
Poetry Readings
During April, students shared famous authors' poetry and their own original work. Poetry styles explored and practiced include haiku, biography, and book spine poetry.
