8th Grade Panther Update
What is happening this month in our academic classrooms?
ELA
The month of March will be focused on preparing for the Forward Exam. These preparations include reading and analyzing text by answering multiple choice questions, as well as how to construct a quality paragraph using textual evidence to support personal reasoning. These lessons will focus on concepts that we have taught throughout the entire year thus far. Students who like to prepare for testing can use any of the assignments posted in Google Classroom under the “Forward Prep” subheading. Adams - Banko - Wegner
MATH
Our Math 8 classes are working on transformations of figures on a coordinate plane. We learn how to translate, reflect, rotate, and dilate different figures. After spring break, we will review previous curriculum content in preparation for the Forward exam. For Algebra we are starting to get into exponential and compound growth. We discuss investments and how much of what we learn has a lot of real life application.Kooistra - Rogler - Triphan
Science
8th graders will be finishing the Reproduction Unit right before spring break. After we prepare for the Forward Exam, and take the Forward Exam, we will be starting our new unit of Evolution. In this unit students will learn more about traits, variations, and mutations. They will be introduced to some of the scientists of the past that have built the foundation for evolution, including Charles Darwin and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck. The unit will also cover evidence to support the theory of evolution by natural selection, fossils, embryology, family history, and evolution of resistance. Rogler - Anderson
Social Studies
We are continuing Westward through the study of Manifest Destiny. We will discuss the movement of European Americans across the country and the impact that had on the Native people then and even today. Some topics will include the Indian Removal Act, the war with Mexico, and the Annexation of Texas. We will also be reviewing various map skills as we get reading for the Forward Exam.Adams - Banko - Anderson - Kooistra - Wegner - Rogler - Prust - Triphan
