October Changemaker Trait of the Month: Respect
OCTOBER: Respect begins with the way we treat one another each day. When we listen, value different perspectives, and speak with kindness, we help create schools where everyone feels welcome and valued. This October, we encourage our students and staff to show respect through their words and actions, knowing that small choices can make a meaningful difference for others.

Attendance Matters
Build the Habit of Good Attendance
Did you knowβ¦
β’ Too many absences in preschool and elementary school can cause children to struggle socially and academically.
β’ Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
β’ Missing 10% of school (2 days each month) can make it harder to learn to read and do basic math.
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school β and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool and through elementary school so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day, is important.
What you can doβ¦
β’ Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
β’ Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
β’ Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up.
β’ Monitor your childβs absences.
β’ Try to schedule nonurgent medical appointments and extended trips when school isnβt in session.
β’ If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to the teacher, school counselor or school social worker for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
β’ If you are concerned that your child may have a contagious illness, call the school nurse, Mrs. Williams, or your health-care provider for advice. Ask the teacher for ideas to support missed learning time.
