Around the District with Dr. Kelley

The word discipline in connection with schools has such a negative connotation. The long history of shame, punishment and racism has interfered with the very purpose of schools – to help young people learn and grow. District 97 is reclaiming and redefining discipline to better align with our mission and vision of what it means to be educators of students. We are making systemic shifts away from punishment to a mindset of preemption and restoration. Read and learn more - Around the District with Dr. Kelley - http://bit.ly/34JiR84

What time is it? Snack time!

Green Bites is dusting off an entry from back in September because these middle school kids are STILL always hungry, and I know they (and we) can use a little input on how to solve that in an actually healthy way. The great thing about middle schoolers is that they can pretty much get their own snacks together without the help they may have needed way back when they were in elementary. But even if they're getting their own snack, it's still helpful to remind kids that food is fuel — and the ideal teen fuel is a mix of complex carbohydrates, fruit or veg, and protein. Here are four easy options:

  • a few slices of cheese and a handful of nuts or edamame
  • yogurt with berries or some sliced melon
  • baked tortilla chips with bean dip and a side of sliced peppers
  • whole grain toast topped with or sun butter
  • and sliced banana
