Resilience
During Spartan Start last week, students learned about resilience and different strategies to build resiliency. Resilience refers to recovering and adapting in the face of challenges or difficult situations in life. When a person is able to “bounce back” after dealing with a life stressor, they have resiliency. Students took a “Resiliency Inventory” by rating themselves on various questions relating to optimism, problem solving skills, the ability to adapt, and emotion management.
Resilience is so important when it comes to navigating challenges and difficult situations in life. Everyone has the ability to be resilient. Students watched a video called Become resilient for kids, which provided some tips to help channel resilience in the face of adversity. Watch the video below.
Try new things and learn from your mistakes so you can try again.
Push yourself outside of your comfort zone.
Surround yourself with good social support
Focus on positivity and reframe your negative thinking.
Take care of yourself.
Resilience and Biosphere 2
Students also looked at resiliency through a different lens last week. They learned about Biosphere 2, a research facility constructed in Arizona between 1987 and 1991. The facility was designed to demonstrate the viability of a closed ecological system to support and maintain human life in outer space as a substitute for Earth’s biosphere. The environment had the optimal sun, water, and temperature for plants to grow.
Surprisingly, the trees outside of Biosphere 2 grew more rapidly than those living inside the perfect conditions. The trees inside Biosphere 2 even started falling down. Scientists found that the lack of wind inside the Biosphere prevented the tree roots from extending deep into the ground. The same is true for human life. We become stronger when we face adversity in life. Resilience can be built in times of stress and hardship, just like the trees living in the strong winds.
Food Drive - Week of April 8th
Project Reach Out is hosting a food drive contest the week of April 8th. Students can bring their donations to the main office any time during that week. Each item they bring in will give their Spartan Start class a point. At the end of the week, the Spartan Start class with the most points for each grade level will win an ICE CREAM PARTY. You can also bring in donations to our Passport to the World event on the 10th from 4:30-6:30pm, Project Reach Out will be there to collect and mark off your points.
Attendance Matters!
Class starts each day with students in classrooms by 7:55am. The warning bell rings at 7:50am. To see if your child has been tardy to any of their classes, check PowerSchool to view your child’s attendance. If you see any errors, please contact Ms. Charity.
**Our school day ends at 3:05pm. Unless your student is registered for an after school activity, they must leave the building by 3:30pm.**

Healthy Minute: Teamwork, Community, Accountability
Healthy habits are the pillars to a healthy lifestyle. Joining after school programs such as sports, clubs, intramurals etc. help to keep your body active and your mind engaged. It is important to have a feeling of belonging, to have a team to show up for, to hold yourself accountable. There are days when we don't always want to go to sports practice, to perform in our band/choir concert, or to go to our after school club or intramurals. But what is important to remember is that you are starting the building blocks for your future, now, as a Middle School student. How you show up for yourself and for others shows your character and builds a confident lifestyle. It’s a good healthy habit to begin at a young age!

At 7pm families will have the opportunity to visit athletic and academic groups, as well as get a building tour by the SHS Student Council.
LionHeart Student Assembly
On April 17th, all SHS Students will be gathering for a second fun and exciting visit from The Lionheart Experience.
Specializing in worth-infusing performances and speaking in schools nation-wide, Joe
Vercellino and the Lion Heart Crew create waves in the world of education by placing the
spotlight on identity and worth. Through masterful original music from the city of Detroit
alongside visual-art and a powerful narrative; Joe and The Lion Heart crew show how both
worth and identity are the core influence in everything from school violence, bullying, teen
anxiety/depression all the way to high teacher turnover in schools and issues at home.
Throughout the year, Joe and The Crew travel, speaking and performing in schools and
conferences as The Lion Heart Experience; a school assembly designed to infuse young
people with a sense of self-worth and purpose.
With strong themes of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), mental-health awareness, drug,
alcohol and suicide prevention, The Lion Heart Experience has significant impacts on both
preventing and alleviating teen-anxiety in schools nation-wide.

Makers Night - Rescheduled for April 24th
Due to an extremely low number of registrants, our PTSA decided to try a new date for our Makers Night. Save the date for April 24th same time and place.
What is "Makers Night"? You will work with a team, and one or two SHS Golf players to create a mini golf putting hole made of cardboard and recycled materials. We provide you with a big pile of cardboard, tools, glue, tape, and other fun building materials. You will have a time limit to plan and create your course. Then each team will go around and play and score. Teams will receive prize trophies made by our SMS 8th Grade STEM class. Dinner is also included!
This event is FREE, but we ask you REGISTER VIA THIS LINK so we can prepare for supplies and dinner.
Special thanks to the SHS golf teams and SMS STEM class for partnering with us on this fun family event!
Food Service
Breakfast and dinner at SMS continue to be free for all students, but lunch is paid. We encourage all families to apply for free and reduced lunch. Even if you are not eligible, your application helps our school. You can apply multiple times throughout the school year, especially if your home situation changes. You can easily add funds into your student's lunch account through My School Bucks.
Intramurals
We have some programs that are currently running, but still have openings for students. Click below for more information and to register. There will be more programs coming next month!
Contact Mrs. Bender, our intramural coordinator, with any questions.

"Ask the Expert" Community Event
Educating and bringing awareness to the Spartan community is always at the forefront of the School District of Superior. Continuing the great Hidden In Plain Sight event held earlier this month, Superior is set to host "Ask the Expert: Opioid Awareness in the Spartan Community." This event will welcome a panel consisting of experts from Essentia Health, Vivant Health, Superior Police Department, Douglas County Health & Human Services, and Douglas County District Attorney Mark Fruehauf.
Ask the Expert is a special discussion in which five presenters will speak on the dangers of drug and opioid use. Shortly after, the experts will answer submitted questions from the audience. This event is made possible by the continued support of the Douglas County Drug Prevention Coalition, Essentia Amberwing, Lake Superior Community Health Center, and the School District of Superior Health Services Coordinator. The Discussion event will be live-streamed on the district's YouTube channel.
"Opioid use is a major concern in the Northland and our community," said Jane Larson, Superior High School Social Worker. "We look to educate all our Spartans on the potential dangers of opioid usage. I'm excited to welcome all our panel experts and listen to the questions from our community."
Ask The Expert event will begin on April 4th at Superior High School. A free dinner will be provided in the Commons at 6 p.m. and a panel discussion at 6:30 p.m. Those attending are invited to ask questions during the Q&A-resource table session at 7:30. For more information, please contact Jane Larson by email or phone at 715-394-8720 Ext 41270.
Summer School
Summer School 2024 is just around the corner! Registration will officially begin on April 15th, and we would love to welcome all our Spartans to a summer of fun! In the meantime, check out the summer school webpage for details! More details will be added as we get closer to summer.
This year, we will host four locations (Cooper, Northern Lights, Superior Middle School, and Superior High School). SHS will begin classes on June 10th, while the rest of the district will start on June 17th.
Along with the many classes offered at our schools, we have partnered with the City of Superior Parks and Recreation Department which offers outdoor playground programs throughout the area. Of course, these programs depend on if the weather cooperates. In preparation for the 2024 season, the Parks and Recreation program is asking our Spartan community to fill out this brief survey for location preferences.
The Summer Playground Program is a weather-dependent program scheduled from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, starting in the middle of June and ending in the middle of August. The program's goal is to provide supervised play and outdoor fun in a safe environment for children ages 5-11 in Superior.
