Talking: The Foundation of Literacy

Over the years, the focus of less "teacher talk" and more "student talk" has been on the rise. However, we still see classrooms that are dominated by the teacher doing all of the talking; especially in secondary settings.

As more and more younger students acquire smart phones, teachers are seeing reading and writing proficiency on the decline.

Now with the new ELAR TEKS weaving oral language skills throughout all of the strands, there is no ignoring that speaking proficiency is key to reading and writing development.

Below you will find resources and ideas to promote student talk in your classroom.

THE ONE DOING THE TALKING IS THE ONE DOING THE LEARNING.

Check out Flipgrid. It's FREE for Educators!

Although Flipgrid is not a new digital platform, teachers are finding more and more ways to integrate the tool into instruction.

Recently, Cleburne ISD shared how they are using Flipgrid to help English Learners in listening and speaking proficiency. In preparation for the changes in TELPAS, Cleburne's ESL Specialists worked collaboratively to create questions for ELs to practice listening and speaking skills. The forward thinking of CISD helped students prepare for the listening and speaking portion of TELPAS that is now assessed online.

Below you will find resources and ideas for Flipgrid novices and experts.

Sheltered Instruction: Supporting English Language Learners in ANY Classroom

In this workshop, participants will gain a basic understanding of how to design instruction that focuses on providing English language learners access to grade-level content, curriculum, and concepts while they continue to improve their academic language proficiency. Participants will learn the characteristics of sheltered instruction as well as tips for implementation in the classroom. This session will aid teachers in complying with TAC Chapter 74.4 (English Language Proficiency Standards), which must be implemented as an integral part of each subject in the required curriculum. Sheltered instruction techniques and strategies explored in this session work to lower the linguistic demand of the lesson without compromising the integrity or rigor of the subject matter.
