The VMMS Student Handbook has been updated to include the following information regarding student attendance and parental excuses. For the full policy please see the VMMS Handbook which can be found on our school's website or in the newsletter below.
The school will only excuse eight parent notes for the year. If a parent note covers multiple days, each day will be counted toward the eight (8) note limit. Parents have three days from the student’s return date to provide documentation for the absence. After the eighth parental excuse, the school will request official documentation which includes medical or legal documentation for the absence to be excused. If official documentation is not provided after the eighth parental note the absence will remain unexcused.
State law recognizes the following reasons as excused absences:
1. Personal illness
2. Death in the immediate family
3. State-recognized religious holidays
4. Principal’s approval of attendance at school-related experiences
5. Absences mandated by governmental agencies
6. Serving as a page in the General Assembly of Georgia
Unexcused absences include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Oversleeping (student or family)
2. Missing the bus
3. Babysitting
4. Joining the family on vacation
5. Skipping school
6. Cutting class
7. Out-of-school suspension
8. Car trouble
9. Out of class for discipline referral
10. Failing to bring a note from a parent about the absence
The student handbook can be found above or on the Veterans Memorial Middle School website. The student handbook contains important information related to dress code, school rules, policies and procedures. Students will go over the student handbook during the first week of school with teachers. We highly encourage families to review the student handbook at home to gain a full understanding of our policies and procedures at Veterans Memorial Middle School.
