Husky Herald
August 2026
Welcome
Welcome to a new school year! We are excited to open our doors and begin another year of learning, growth, and success together. Whether you are returning to our school community or joining us for the first time, we are grateful for the opportunity to partner with you in your child's education.
As we start this new year, our dedicated teachers and staff have been working hard to prepare engaging learning experiences and create a positive, supportive environment where every student can thrive. We are committed to helping each child reach their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally.
A strong school-home partnership is essential to student success, and we encourage open communication and active involvement throughout the year. Together, we can ensure that every student feels welcomed, valued, and empowered to achieve their goals.
We look forward to a year filled with learning, memorable experiences, and celebrations of achievement. Thank you for your continued support and trust in our school. Let's make this our best year yet!
The Husky Herald
For those of you who are new to Hunter Street, the Husky Herald is a monthly newsletter that will come to you via email and Parent Square. Newsletters will contain information and pictures from our classrooms so that you can see what students are working on while they are at school. In the Husky Happenings section, you will find a list of important dates, so that you can stay current with upcoming events. As you scroll further down, you will find buttons that will take you to the 2026-27 Academic Calendar, links to our social media page and more.
Welcome Back Presentation
If you were unable to attend Open House or would like to review the presentation shared at the beginning of each session, please use the link below to watch it. The presentation contains important information that will help ensure a smooth and successful school year for both students and staff.
As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are happy to help.
Welcome Back PresentationAttention Car Riders
A third lane was added to our car loop over the summer. This was to help move as many vehicles as possible off Alexander Love Highway, please use all three lanes when entering. At the designated left turn, merge into a single lane for AM drop-off. We will have someone stationed at this point to help with the merge. Continue through the car rider line by following the green arrows. For everyone's safety and efficiency, please do not bypass the line by entering at the location marked with the red X. We ask for your help and cooperation as we strive to keep everyone's safety our top priority.
Car Rider Reminders
For everyone's safety, please remain attentive to traffic and avoid using your cell phone while moving through the car rider line.
If your child rides in a car seat, please unbuckle them before reaching the unloading area. Our staff members are unable to unbuckle students from car seats.
Please have backpacks, water bottles, lunch boxes, and any other belongings ready so students can exit the vehicle quickly when the car comes to a stop. When unloading at the front entrance, please pull forward to the next available staff member.
We appreciate your cooperation and support in helping our car rider line operate safely and efficiently each day. Thank you for working with us to ensure a smooth arrival process for all students.
If your family needs additional car rider tags, please notify your child's teacher of the number needed, and we will be happy to send them home.
Please remember that we cannot dismiss any students from the office after 1:45 pm. Any last minute changes to a student's transportation should be communicated to the office before 1:45 pm as well. We have a system in place to ensure that any changes to a student's transportation are communicated to the teacher before dismissal begins. These systems ensure that all students get home safely.
Transportation- Bus Information
All bus information (route number, bus stop times, etc) will be communicated to parents through Parent Portal a few days before school begins.
MyRideK12 by Traversa is the easiest way for York School District One families to stay connected with their student’s bus ride. With this free mobile app, parents and guardians can quickly check bus stop locations, route details, and even see when the bus is scheduled to arrive. It’s all about giving you peace of mind and helping your student get to and from school safely. Download MyRideK12 today on your Apple or Android device and stay in the know—wherever you go!
4k/5k Staggered Start
Our 4k and 5k students begin the school year with a staggered start. They only attend school ONE DAY during the first week of school in order to help the students adjust, become familiar with the classroom and school environment, and to complete required assessments.
All 4k and 5k classes will officially begin on Monday, August 10 with a regular full day of school.
Student Independence
We understand that the beginning of the school year is an exciting and special time for families. Parents and guardians are welcome to walk their child into the building during the first two days of school.
Beginning Wednesday, August 5, we will celebrate Student Independence Day and encourage students to enter the building and walk to class on their own. This practice helps build confidence, responsibility, and independence while creating a smoother arrival process for all students.
Due to the staggered start schedule, 4K and 5K students will begin Student Independence Day on Tuesday, August 11, and 3K students will begin on Friday, August 14.
Parent Square
ParentSquare brings together district, school, and classroom communication in one place—making it easier for you to stay informed and connected.
With ParentSquare, families can receive updates via email, text, and the free mobile app. You’ll be able to view calendar events and announcements, send and receive messages, and more—all in your preferred language. Families will notice many familiar features from Remind, along with new capabilities that support stronger communication with your child’s school.
Parent Square now allows parents to submit parent notes for attendance excuses through the ParentSquare App. We are already receiving many notes using ParentSquare. Check it out!
To learn more about ParentSquare and view resources for the transition from Remind, please visit york.k12.sc.us/Back2School. There you’ll find links to a Getting Started Guide and helpful tips for families.
School Bell is Ringing
Regular attendance and punctuality are essential to student success. Each school day provides valuable learning opportunities, and arriving on time helps students begin their day prepared, focused, and ready to learn.
Our doors open at 7:15 a.m., and instruction begins promptly at 7:45 a.m. Students arriving after 7:45 a.m. are considered tardy and may miss important morning routines, classroom instruction, and opportunities to connect with their teachers and classmates.
In addition, we offer support services beginning at 7:15 a.m. for students who may need extra academic assistance. Arriving early allows students to take advantage of these valuable resources and start their day on the right foot.
Attendance Matters
We recognize the importance of family time and the lasting memories that are created through vacations and shared experiences. We also understand that many family opportunities arise throughout the school year.
To support both family engagement and student learning, we have provided a calendar highlighting suggested vacation periods when students will miss the least amount of instructional time. Our goal is to help families make informed scheduling decisions while minimizing disruptions to student learning.
Emergency Contacts in Final Forms
If you need to update your contact information, emergency contacts, or your child's medical information at any time during the school year you will need to make those changes directly in FINAL FORMS. Please keep your login information for Final Forms so that you may access it during the school year.
Join the HSES School Improvement Council (SIC)
South Carolina law requires every K-12 public school to have a School Improvement Council (SIC) that meets regularly. The SIC is composed of parents, teachers, and community members who work together to support the school's growth and success.
Parents serving on the SIC are nominated and elected by the parents of students attending the school, while teachers are nominated and elected by their fellow faculty members.
Established more than 45 years ago under South Carolina law, School Improvement Councils provide an important opportunity for parents, community members, and school staff to collaborate in the continuous improvement of our schools, ensuring the best possible educational experience for all students.
The vision of the SC School Improvement Council is:
"To promote and support civic engagement for quality public education in South Carolina.”
The mission of the SC School Improvement Council is:
"To facilitate meaningful parent and community involvement in our state’s public schools by providing resources, tools and strategies to local School Improvement Councils and other stakeholder groups."
We would love for you to get involved with our HSES School Improvement Council (SIC)! If you are interested in serving on the council, please contact Mrs. Montgomery at hemontgomery@york.k12.sc.us.

Read 2 Succeed Law
Third grade is a critical year for our students as they transition from learning to read to reading to learn. We are committed to supporting your child’s reading development and helping them succeed. Below are key details about the Read to Succeed Act and how it impacts third-grade reading expectations.
---
Why Third Grade Reading Matters
Reading proficiency by the end of third grade is essential for your child’s academic success. At this stage, students use reading skills to learn other subjects like math, science, and social studies. Developing fluency and comprehension now lays the foundation for future learning and success.
---
The Read to Succeed Act
The Read to Succeed Act ensures that all students gain the reading skills necessary for college, career, or military readiness. The law requires that third-grade students who do not demonstrate reading proficiency—scoring Does Not Meet Expectations on the SC Ready reading assessment—be retained for additional support.
---
Good Cause Exemptions
Students who qualify for specific Good Cause Exemptions may still be promoted to fourth grade. These exemptions include:
· Limited English proficiency (fewer than two years of English instruction).
· Disabilities requiring alternative assessments or interventions (as outlined in their IEP).
· Receiving reading interventions for two years and previously being retained.
· Demonstrating reading proficiency on an approved alternative assessment.
Please contact your school if you believe your child may qualify for an exemption.
---
Summer Reading Camp (SRC)
Students who do not meet the required reading level by the end of third grade will be invited to attend Summer Reading Camp. This program offers intensive, small-group instruction to help students strengthen their reading skills. Successful completion of the camp could lead to promotion to fourth grade.
---
How We Support Your Child
We are committed to helping every student become a confident, independent reader through:
· Additional instructional time focused on literacy.
· Small-group and individualized reading interventions.
· Specialized teacher training provided by literacy coaches.
We also monitor progress regularly and communicate results to keep you informed.
---
How You Can Help at Home
Your involvement is key to your child’s reading success. Here’s how you can help:
· Read Together Daily: Encourage your child to read aloud and ask questions like, “What happened in the story?” or “Why do you think that happened?”
· Communicate with Teachers: Stay in touch with your child’s teacher about their progress.
· Use School Resources: We’re here to provide tools and materials to support your child’s reading journey at home.
---
By working together, we can make this year a success for your child. If you have questions or need additional support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher.
Thank you for partnering with us to make third grade a year of growth and learning!
