Beyond Behaviors Understanding the “Why” Behind the What

Beyond Behaviors Understanding the “Why” Behind the What

Kids aren’t giving us a hard time—kids are having a hard time. Beyond Behaviors helps educators decode stress behaviors and respond in ways that honor each child’s story—especially students shaped by adoption, foster care, kinship care, divorce, newcomer transitions, military family life, or other complex family experiences. It gives educators a clear lens for understanding the relational loss, grief, identity questions, and early adversity many students carry into the classroom. Instead of reacting to behaviors, participants learn to interpret what the nervous system is communicating and why some students move quickly into survival states. Participants learn how to meet dysregulated students with structure and connection, and how to design consequences that build capacity rather than increase shame. Educators leave with practical tools to support students through regulation, re-entry, reflection, and repair—strengthening belonging and increasing readiness to learn.

Several Reminders For The Month Of September

September Observances Supporting Inclusion, Awareness, and Student Well-Being

September offers numerous opportunities to celebrate diversity, raise awareness, and strengthen inclusive school communities. Special education professionals, educators, and advocates can use these observances to promote understanding, accessibility, and belonging for all students.

Deaf Awareness Month and International Day of Sign Languages (September 23)

Deaf Awareness Month recognizes the culture, achievements, and contributions of Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. International Day of Sign Languages, observed on September 23, highlights the importance of sign languages and equitable communication access for all.

ADHD Awareness Kickoff (Late September)

As academic demands increase during the school year, this awareness initiative encourages conversations about Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), executive functioning skills, and effective accommodations that support student success in educational settings.

National Suicide Prevention Month

National Suicide Prevention Month focuses on mental health awareness, early intervention, and access to support services. Schools can use this opportunity to reinforce trauma-informed practices, encourage help-seeking behaviors, and promote student well-being through regular mental health check-ins and supportive resources.

Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Events

The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) will host its Virtual Washington Update Session on September 24, 2026, providing education professionals and advocates with updates on policies and initiatives affecting students with disabilities and special education services.

Why These Observances Matter

Together, these observances provide meaningful opportunities to foster empathy, celebrate diverse identities and experiences, and create more inclusive learning environments where every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.
