Principal's Message
December 18, 2023
Dear Families,
As we approach the end of 2023, I find myself reflecting on how privileged I am to play a role in this dynamic extended school community. Our teachers work hard to provide experiences that nurture the academic and social growth of their students. Our families are incredibly supportive of our students and school district. The work of our PTO and your support for their events has been incredible. Every day, I see countless examples of our students’ hard work and kindness.
In our recent Trimester Assemblies, I talked about belonging and the critical importance that every child feels that they belong and are part of our school. I also shared with the students the parable of the starfish—a story that underscores the significance of the “little things” and the profound impact they can have for themselves and others. The essence of this parable resonates deeply with our shared commitment to nurturing a positive and caring learning environment for our students.
Your unwavering support, whether in preparing your children for each new school day, attending school events, or collaborating with our dedicated educators, embodies the spirit of the starfish parable. Each small gesture, each act of kindness, contributes to the overall well-being and success of our school community. Your commitment to your child’s success has not only shaped the academic progress of our students but has also fostered a sense of unity and resilience that defines Florence Sawyer School.
As we embrace the winter break, I extend my warmest wishes to you and your families. May this holiday season be a time of joy, reflection, and cherished moments spent with loved ones.
Looking ahead to the new year, I am excited about the continued collaboration and shared successes that await us. We are a learning organization and will continue to seek out, be open to, and act on your feedback to take stock of the things we do well and where we can be better.
Yours in partnership,
Joel Bates,
Principal

Girls on the Run 2024
Dear parents/guardians of FSS’s 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders!
My name is Jennifer Hubacz and I am the head coach of Girls on The Run for Florence Sawyer School. Girls on the Run is an after-school program for girls in grades 3-5, aimed at helping students make positive social connections, increase physical activity, & learn life skills. Physical activity & social-emotional curriculum are woven into two sessions per week, culminating in a celebratory non-competitive 5k run/walk event. Curriculum themes include: turning negative self-talk into positive self-talk, understanding emotions, standing up for self and others, making and maintaining healthy relationships, and making an impact on the community. No prior running experience is necessary – the program is accessible to all girls regardless of fitness level or physical ability. Stretching & running activities are woven into lessons by trained staff coaches. The program runs on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons at FSS from dismissal until 4:30pm, beginning the week of March 19th through the 5k at Polar Park on June 2nd. FSS staff members Jennifer (Rogers) Hubacz, Stacey Southard, Evelyn Cubero, and Megan Gurley will be leading the program this year. Registration, which includes all fees for the season, is $195. This year, Girls On The Run are running a lottery registration and it will be open starting January 1, 2024 and run until the end of day on February 2, 2024. “Winners” will be announced by the end of day on Monday, February 5, 2024. Participants will be notified by email that they have secured a spot on a team. If there were more than 18 girls registered for the lottery and they did not "win", they will receive an email from Girls On The Run notifying them that they are on the waitlist. You will not be charged until you “win” a spot on February 5, 2024. Please see the attached PDF and links below for more information.
