FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Dear TR Families,
We are back at it, and the students are doing great! They are well into their routines and the hard work of reading and math has begun. It takes a lot of effort to persevere through their classwork - - they will likely be tired in these first few weeks as they adjust to the long days of work, especially our youngest students!
In this newsletter, please find information about:

- School picture day
- Back to School Night (September 24)
- District focus group opportunity

- Carpooling to Tower Rock
- Zones of Regulation

It is my hope that your student(s) have a wonderful year of learning this year. We are here to partner with you. Reach out anytime.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT
We are excited to welcome you to Tower Rock's Back to School Night Thursday, September 24 from 5-7pm. All Tower Rock families are invited. This is a time for your student to show you around the school, show you what they have been learning, participate in some activities together, and generally have a good time together in an academic setting. You can come at any time between the hours of 5:00-7:00pm. The activities will take anywhere from 30 minutes (super fast) to 75 minutes (slowly and carefully doing each activity). We look forward to seeing you there!
DISTRICT OPPORTUNITY
FRIENDS OF ED (FOE) PARENT/GUARDIAN GROUP
Friends of Education (FOE) is our school’s caregiver–educator organization, which supports students and staff through fundraising and volunteer efforts. A reminder that the 2026-2027 FOE Officers are:
President: Heather Baumel
Vice President: Jackie Wolf
Treasurer: Sonia Barber
Secretary: Leah Kornish
Social Media Director: Brittany Wanless
FOE supports many of the field trips, classroom supplies, literacy week and outdoor learning that Tower Rock offers. FOE will be at Back to School night to offer more information about how you could get involved. We can't wait to see you there!
SAFETY WEEK AT TOWER ROCK
During the week of October 5, students will participate in a number of activities that are safety-focused. The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is now requiring that we practice various types of drills, rather than just talking to the students about each drill. SPSD follows the Sauk County protocols when it comes to safety, which is something called the Standard Response Protocol.
During our safety week, we will have a visit from:
- An EMT with an ambulance
- A firefighter with a firetruck
- The K-9 unit from Sauk County Sheriff
- Our school resource officer will be playing soccer at recess with us
When we practice our drills, we will be really clear about why we are doing them for some of the drills (i.e. there is a tornado in the area so we are going to go into our shelter spots until it passes). For other drills (e.g. lockdown), we will not be as clear or explicit (i.e. we need to move to the corner of our room and be very quiet for a bit), and not alarm them more than we need to. Your child(ren) may come home talking about the drills. Please reach out to the school if you have any questions about these conversations with your child.
HELP A FAMILY?
Some of our Tower Rock families choose to bring their kiddos to Tower Rock, which requires transportation to and from school everyday. We have a family who would like to get a carpool going / needs a bit of help getting kids to and from Tower Rock. If you come from town and would like to connect with this family, please email Kelly (kelly.petrowski@saukprairieschools.org) and she will connect you.
ZONES OF REGULATION
Over the first few weeks, our students will about the Zones of Regulation. The graphic below provides language for us to help work through issues that may arise with students. For example, we might say, "It looks like you are in the yellow zone. What might you need to get back into the green zone?" Feel free to use at home as you see fit!
SOCIAL WORKER AT TOWER ROCK
Hello Families,
My name is Kelsi Cook, I am the new school social worker here at Tower Rock Elementary and Grand Avenue Elementary.
My role as a school social worker is to support students' academic, social, and emotional success at school, while also acting as a connection between school, home, and the community. I can provide resources (like food, clothing, and personal care items), mental health supports at school, and help connect students and families to community resources.
Please reach out to me at kelsi.cook@saukprairieschools.org or 608-643-5914. Students can stop by my office on Tuesdays and Fridays.
For more information, see my newsletter here.
FROM FOOD SERVICE
Reminder about Free and Reduced Meal Benefits
We want to remind parents that the 30-day grace period for last year's free and reduced meal benefits is ending soon. These benefits will expire on October 14, 2026. If your family received free or reduced meals last school year, you must submit a new application for the current school year to avoid a disruption in benefits.
What you need to know:
If you have already received a letter of direct certification, or have already completed and submitted a new application for this school year, you are all set. No further action is required.
If you have not yet applied for this school year, please visit our website for more information and to fill out an application.
You can find the application and more details here.
CONVERSATION STARTERS
When asked, "How was your day?" students often respond, "Fine." When asked, "What did you do?" sometimes students respond, "Nothing." Here are some different questions to ask to get them talking. :)
