November 2-6

Hello third-grade families,

It was so great to get so many of the multiplication practice pages back last week. Thank you for encouraging your student to practice at home. Because of the business of the holiday week, I only sent home one practice page last week, so I will be sending home 3 this week. Multiplication practice for 3s and 4s are posted below. I'll send home 5s later this week and post that here as well.

In class we are learning about how multiplication and division are related. We're I also try to do a big push to master multiplication facts before we start learning about area in just a few short weeks.

We have a few things coming up before the holiday break in December. First, RISE testing will take place in the next few weeks. I will let you know our assigned date when I get it, but it will happen the week before Thanksgiving Break.

Second, my math students will be starting a new online math program called FRAX in the next few weeks. I have mixed feelings about many online programs, but FRAX has been wonderful for helping my students understand fractions. Students also seem to love it. Once we start, I will be requiring 2 "missions" per week along with I Ready Lessons. I plan to do use WIN time for most of this.

All the best,

Emily Pope

Optional Multiplication Homework

Links for the week's optional homework will be posted below.

Students can earn $20 in classroom money for each page they return that is at least 90% correct.

Physical copies will be sent home twice each week, but you can also download and print them from here. Students can practice worksheets as often as they like, but they will only earn $20 for the first time they complete each multiplication fact page.

Weekly Updates Weekly Updates

October 26-30

Hello third-grade families,

MATH SKILLS:

I can't believe that we are already approaching the holiday season! This week, we will finish up our lessons on multiplication. Most of the lessons in your student's math book focuses on understanding what multiplication is and teaches strategies for breaking apart factors to make multiplication easier. We will continue to review these concepts throughout the year, but we will also shift a lot of our focus to mastering multiplication facts through 10. It is extremely helpful for your student to practice these at home! As we start lessons on division this week, knowing multiplication facts will make these lessons significantly easier for your student. Please help them keep practicing!

EXTRA PRACTICE:

I will be sending home optional practice pages in the for the next few weeks. While this multiplication practice does not count toward their grade, it will help them with the remainder of this year's lessons and into the upper grades. Students who bring back completed multiplication practice can earn class money to use in 3rd grade store.

CLASS REWARD TUESDAY:

Our class earned their whole class reward! This coming Tuesday, October 27th, students can bring a pillow OR stuffed animal to class. Please ensure that stuffed animals can easily fit inside your student's backpack. We will be making blanket forts and playing math games for part of math class on this day. Students are welcome to bring blankets or sheets to help build a fort if they would like. I will bring some fitted sheets from home as well. I find that these are the easiest thing to use for making forts with the desks in our classrooms. They are also less bulky for students to carry than blankets. Please ensure that your student can easily carry whatever they bring to class on this day.

October 19-23

Welcome back from fall break!

This week in math we are learning how to multiply by multiples of ten. Soon we will begin working on division!

October 5-9

Just a reminder that this Wednesday is the 3rd Grade field trip to the Hogle Zoo! Reach out to your student's homeroom teacher if you need any information.

This week in math, we started multiplying with 7, 8, and 9. We also started our timed fluency practice of multiplication facts. I can tell that many of your students are practicing multiplication at home. It is definitely making a difference for those who are!

September 28-October 2

Hello third-grade families,

It was so great to meet with you all this past week! Here are the updates for this week:

Our class earned our whole class incentive last week. I had intended to have today be the day that they could bring a stuffed animal to school, but I ended up having to call in sick. Tomorrow, Tuesday September 29th, students may bring a stuffed animal to math class. Their stuffed animal needs to be a reasonable size that can easily fit inside their backpack. If a student is not able to concentrate or allow other students to work because of their stuffed animal, they will have to put it back into their backpacks. Please let me know if you have any questions.

We are finishing up a lesson on multiplying with 3, 4, and 6 tomorrow. Then we will start multiplying with 7, 8, and 9.

This week for WIN Time, the math and literacy specialists are collecting and reviewing data on how students are doing, so your students WIN group may be adjusted in the coming weeks.

September 21-25

Hello third-grade families,

Parent teacher conferences are this week! As a part-time teacher, I only have conference times available on Wednesday evening. I will have both Zoom and in person conferences available. Please email me if you are not able to attend at the available times. I would still love to meet with you or even chat over the phone.

Last week, we started learning about multiplication. The class is so excited for this! Because of a generous donation from one of you, I will have a set of flashcards for each of my students to take home at parent teacher conferences. If you are not able to attend conferences, please let me know, and I will send flashcards home with your students. Multiplication is such a big part of third grade. Please help your students practice if you are able.

I have all grades in for work up to last Wednesday, September 16th. I will have everything completely up to date by this Tuesday evening, September 22nd. I have many students who are missing assignments. I will be sending home copies of missing work with your students Tuesday afternoon. Please watch for these to come home if you notice missing assignments on Aspire.

Most of my students are staying on top of I Ready Lessons. Students earn 12 points each week for I Ready. To earn their full points, they need at least 45 minutes of lesson time and 2 lessons passed. I will start emailing home this week if your student is not getting lessons in. Because this week is a short week, I will not be requiring a full 45 minutes. This week our goal is 25 minutes and 1 lesson passed.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and I hope to see you all at Parent Teacher Conferences!

September 7-11

Here are the updates for this week:

I want to start by saying thank you to all of those who have donated to our math class! Thank you so much for your generosity! I'm so excited to use these resources in our class.

This week is the first week that I'm requiring the full 45 minutes/2 lessons of I Ready for the week. I will send an email if your student needs to make up any minutes at home. I require 45 minutes and 2 lessons to discourage students from opening I Ready but not actively working on lessons in order to get 45 minutes of "work." However, I understand that some lessons are harder than others. If you notice your student working diligently on I Ready but still struggling to get 2 lessons done with 45 minutes of work during the week, please let me know!

Sign ups for parent teacher conferences will be going out soon. Just a reminder that you will need to meet with me for math updates and your student's homeroom/literacy teacher for everything else. I will be meeting in one of the smaller work rooms in the 6th grade hall. As a part time teacher, I only have conference times available on Wednesday, September 23. If you are unable to attend that day, or if my appointments fill up, please email me for an alternative meeting time.

Just a heads up that my grades in Aspire are not up to date. The third-grade team is considering moving to and "A, B, C, D, I" system for grades which would require me to reenter all assignments and scores. I will do my best to have grades in as soon as possible.

The third-grade field trip is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7th. We will be visiting the Hogle Zoo. Please watch for permission slips to come home. Homeroom parents should be emailing out more information as well as sign ups for chaperones. Please email me if you have any questions.

All the best,

Emily Pope

August 31 - September 4

Hello third-grade families,

This week we are starting a lesson on subtracting 3 digit numbers. We are getting into a more consistent routine with our lessons and expected work. This week, I am giving reminders about completing the practice work in the appointed time in class, and most students are staying caught up. Student's who are not completing work in class will need to complete their work at home. I will do my best to email you when work is coming home with your student.

As we've been finishing up beginning of year testing, I have not required a full 45 minutes of I Ready for the week. Next week students will be required to get their minutes in. They will be given time in class, but again, if work is not completed in class, they will need to finish it at home.

All the best,

Emily Pope

August 24-28

Hello third-grade families,

I really loved getting to know your kids during the first week of school. It's going to be a great year!

This week, we will continue to practice new routines while we get into our math curriculum. Lesson 1 is all about rounding and estimating. We start by discussing which tens and which hundreds numbers fall between on a number line. It seems pretty basic, but students tend to struggle with it at first.

Later this week, we will review subtracting three digit numbers. This is another skill that 3rd graders tend to struggle with at the beginning of the year, especially with regrouping (when I was in school we called it borrowing) when subtracting.

We will also complete some beginning of year testing. This will help give me a good idea about what your student already knows and what I need to review or go into more depth on. We will also start working on I Ready on computers this week. If you have not already done so, please make sure your student returns their signed tech agreement to their homeroom teacher so that they can use the school's computers.

All the best,

Emily Pope

First Week of School

Check back here each Monday for the latest in Math.

This week is all about forming good habits and learning classroom procedures. I'm excited to see so many familiar faces and getting to know a few new ones!

Please make sure that you have signed and returned the Tech Use Agreement. Students are unable to do any work on school computers until this is returned.

See you soon!
