Please join the Equity and Anti-Racism conversation at Hyde-Addison by joining us on Konstella, utilizing the resources here and/or participating in the monthly Equity and Anti-Racism Task Force virtual meeting at 4pm on the last Friday of every month. As parents, teachers and staff, we are interested in doing our part to promote equity and end racism in constructive, supportive ways.

Have you heard about Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s attack on transgender youth and their families? Through a February 22 order, Gov. Abbott directed the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to open child abuse investigations of parents who provide gender affirming care to their trans children—and stated that teachers and other professionals who have direct contact with children are mandatory reporters subject to criminal prosecution for failure to report knowledge of such gender affirming care to law enforcement authorities. Although a state court has temporarily blocked the governor’s directive, the litigation will continue for months or years and public officials in other states are likewise enacting anti-trans youth laws and policies. Check out this NPR profile of one Texas family fighting back against Gov. Abbott. For more information and to offer support to those fighting to defend the civil rights of trans youth and their families in Texas and nationwide, check out the Transgender Education Network of Texas, Out Youth, GLSEN, and Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund.

As this newsletter hits your inbox at the tail end of Women’s History Month, please joining us in celebrating the historic nomination of DC-born Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court. When confirmed, Judge Jackson will become the first African American woman to serve on the Supreme Court. The extraordinarily qualified Judge Jackson is a graduate of Harvard University and Harvard Law School, served as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Breyer (who’s seat she has been nominated to fill), worked as a public defender (and will become the first former public defender to serve on the Supreme Court), and has served as a federal district and then appellate judge over the past decade. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, Judge Jackson’s Senate confirmation hearing became a showcase of racism and sexism. But Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) refused to allow attacks on Judge Jackson to steal his joy. His exchange with Judge Jackson, in which he acknowledges her perseverance and celebrates her achievements, will likely move you to tears. Check it out. And your children might get a kick out of The Wise Channel’s profile of Judge Jackson!
