Principal Message

Irving Families,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break and enjoyed time with loved ones. As we return to school, we are excited to welcome the month of December—a busy and joyful time at Irving filled with traditions and special events.

One important update: Our Morton Holiday Sing is scheduled for Tuesday, December 16th at 6:00 PM. This is a change from the original important dates that went out over the summer, so please make note of the new date and time.

Before break, we also held a schoolwide assembly to kick off our next PBIS booster: Focus & LEGO Eagles! Throughout the next few weeks, students will work together to show strong focus, hard work, and positive classroom behavior. Classes can earn LEGO “pieces” for meeting expectations, and those who complete their LEGO Eagle by December 17th will earn a LEGO Party. We are excited to see students encourage one another and celebrate their efforts as a team.

Last week, Ms. Ziegler and I also began our annual classroom lessons on racism, with a specific focus on the use of racial slurs. Students are learning about the social and historical context of these words and why they are deeply hurtful. We are reinforcing our zero-tolerance policy for the use of this language at school and teaching students how to respond if they hear it. Please be on the lookout for a contract that will be sent home. We ask that you review it with your child, have a conversation about what is right and wrong when it comes to this language, and return the signed form once completed.

District 100 remains committed to ensuring that all students and families feel safe, supported, and valued in our school community. Creating an inclusive and welcoming environment is core to who we are. Resources to support families with immigration-related concerns can be found on the Family Resources page of our district website.

Additionally, our PTO will soon be hosting the Penguin Patch Holiday Shop. Students will shop during the week of December 8th–12th, and your child’s specific class time will be shared via SeeSaw. The Penguin Patch is a fun opportunity for students to experience the joy of giving as they select small gifts for family members.

December is always a wonderful month at Irving, and we look forward to sharing these experiences with our students and families.
