Quick Tidbits

Hello families!

I hope your week was fantastic last week and that your children all enjoyed the Halloween festivities. I will be back at school tomorrow! As much as I enjoyed our honeymoon, I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss our classroom and students. Here's a few notes for this week!

  • Once I am back in the classroom, I will assess where the substitutes landed with our lessons and update the sections below accordingly.
  • I will likely take this week to get through my email inbox, so thank you for your patience for any replies necessary.
  • Information regarding the read-a-thon came out via text and email from Ms. Julie. Please check this information first as I am getting up to speed on this event. I'll do my best to help out where I can.
  • I am planning on continuing being called Miss Polad through the end of this school year, but I've started the name change paperwork so if your child is specifically excited about my new name, they're welcome to call me Mrs. Yano.
I am excited to see all of our amazing students again tomorrow! Feel free to let them know I've been thinking about them while I've been out. :)

I highly recommend practicing letter sounds and concepts of print at home. I'm sending home these decodable readers with letter sounds until we get to our curriculum's readers (coming soon!).

More Literacy Practice

We have been working hard on learning characters, plot, and setting of stories. An activity to help your child become excited with these is to create your own story with these 3 elements! Then, have your child illustrate the plot and label the characters.

  • This can be verbal, it doesn't have to be written.

How to help at home in math:

  • Review the family letter with your child.
  • Use flashcards (0-100) and help your student identify what the number is, in addition to which number comes next. EX: hold up the number 31. "That's 31! 32 comes next."
  • Practicing number formation at home, even for just a few minutes or a few numbers each day, can make a big difference!
    • Encourage your child to start numbers at the top (or just below the top line). We use chants in class to remind students how to form each number. Feel free to use these at home as well (chants below the number formation).
  • Check out i-Ready's Family Center to search for more specific information and find additional ideas to support your child's math skills.

Number Formation 0-3

0: Round and around and around you go. That's the way to make zero!

1: Number one is like a stick. A line straight down, that's very quick!

2: For number two, go right around. Then make a line across the ground.

3: Go right around, what will it be? Go around again to make a three!

Number Formation 4-7

4: Down and over, down once more, that's the way to make a four!

5: Go down and around, then you stop. Finish the 5 with a line on top!

6: Down around in a circle you go. That’s a 6 just as you know!

7: Slide to the right, then slant the line. That makes a 7 every time!

Number Formation 8-10

8: Make an “S” but do not wait. Slant back up to make an 8!

9: Circle to the left and add a line. Now you’ve made the number 9!

10: Make a 1 and then 0. That makes 10! Now you know!

Social Studies

In social studies, we are finishing up our families unit. Some guiding questions:

  • What is a family?
  • Who are members of a family?
  • How are families alike and different?
  • What are some ways families care for and help one another?

This week we will also be learning about different family traditions and the important roles family members can have. Be sure to ask your child what makes their family special!

Vocabulary Words

family, tradition, role, responsibility

CLEVER - Easily Access Programs We Use CLEVER - Easily Access Programs We Use

What is Clever?

Clever is an app/website that allows students to log into multiple programs through the click of a button. By logging in through a computer or scanning their clever badge on a mobile device (QR code sent home with them), you can access programs the same way we use in school at home. If you ever have questions, please reach out and I am happy to help troubleshoot.

  • If you are trying to log in on an Android phone or tablet, this process may not work. You may want to try on a computer instead by going to www.clever.com. Ensure the school is set to Wasatch Peak Academy!

How to log into the Clever App How to log into the Clever App

I have found it easiest to have the i-Ready and Lexia apps downloaded prior to logging in (including Epic! if you choose to use it). Download the clever app below (iOS only):

Here are directions on how to log in:

1. Download the Clever app

2. Scan the Clever Badge within the Clever app

  • If you just use the camera app on the device, it will NOT load properly. The QR must be scanned through the Clever app
  • It may have an option for "Clever Badge Login" if the camera option does not automatically show up. Select this and the camera should appear. If needed, select "allow camera" to scan the badge.

3. Once the scan has shown a checkmark, your child should have access to i-Ready online and Lexia to work on math and literacy at home if desired. See the logos below for more information.

i-Ready Login (Math)

This program lets students learn, practice, and assess the math skills they are learning in the classroom. As the teacher, it is incredibly important to see where students need additional support to fully grasp a concept. We encourage students to use this program at home, and do allow time for it in the classroom.

Please do not help your student too much in this program. I will not have clear idea of what your child may need more support in versus what they have already mastered. We would love to see you help your student in math with other tools like talking about math positively, practicing counting, addition facts, reviewing homework/classwork, extra practice books, and real world math problems. Grocery stores are great places to implement quick and easy math talk outside of school!

Lexia (Literacy)

Lexia is an online learning program that helps develop literacy. Students can use Lexia at school or at home. Students will be placed at a certain level and develop from where they place on the initial assessment.

Students will log in through Clever. Please see the directions to access Clever above.

Epic!

Epic is an app that will read books to students while tracking the words. There are options to read without the audio as well. This app may be used in class and is available to use for free from 7 AM to 3 PM. If you'd like to use this app at home between these times, you are welcome to! Outside of these hours, it is unavailable.
