CLASS NEWS
Hello Tiger Families,
Wow September just flew by. As many of you know, parent conferences are officially underway, and we have enjoyed getting to share all of the insights we've gathered up to this point. If you have not had the chance to sign up for a conference, please reach out to us.
Next week is a very special week for us, as we are going to celebrate Episcopal Schools' Week! We look forward to seeing everyone at various events throughout the week. At the very bottom of the newsletter, you will find the dates of each event happening next week. If you have questions or are in need of clarification, please don't hesitate to reach out.
We hope you all have a delightful weekend, and we'll see you back on Monday to kick off Episcopal Schools' Week.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Warmly,
The Fourth Grade Team
WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
Mathematics
Math Focus for Next Week:
This week, we will focus on Real-World Problems with Addition and Subtraction, complete a Chapter Review and complete our Chapter 1 Test.
Learning Objective(s):
4th Grade students will be able to use bar models to solve real-world addition and subtraction problems.
Home Support:
Any way you can help support our learning is greatly appreciated. Here are some ideas to support this weeks learning objectives: Talk Through Thinking (Math Talk)
Encourage your child to explain their thinking:
“How did you figure that out?”
“Could we solve this a different way?”
“Does your answer make sense?”
English Language Arts & Reading
Focus for Next Week:
Next week, we will begin reading our first novel: Frindle by Andrew Clements! We will also begin our narrative writing unit. We will discuss the elements of a story and brainstorm ideas for our own stories. Lastly, we will take our second spelling test on Thursday, October 8.
Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to:
Identify story elements such as setting, plot, and characters.
Use brain bubbles to think of ideas for writing a story.
Spell words with the trigraphs igh, tch, and dge.
Home Support:
At home, you can support your child’s inferencing skills by asking deeper questions about any stories they encounter (books, tv shows, movies, etc.). Questions such as “what do you think the character is feeling?” and “what do you think will happen next?” help make skills stick.
Our current spelling list is available at our homework link for your reference. The next spelling test will be Thursday, October 8.
Social Studies
Focus of the Week: Hispanic Heritage Month
We will continue learning about heritage, culture, and the contributions of Hispanic and Latino people. Students will explore the lives of notable individuals by researching a person of their choosing and present their findings to the class.
Learning Objectives:
Students will:
Learn about Hispanic and Latino cultures and experiences.
Identify the contributions of notable Hispanic and Latino individuals.
Explain how their contributions have impacted our world.
Academic Vocabulary: Heritage • Culture • Contribution • Accomplishment • Notable
Home Support:
Ask your child to share something they learned about a notable Hispanic or Latino individual. Families can also talk about their own heritage, traditions, and culture and how these shape who we are.
Science
What is Happening in Science/STEM?
Our unit on Force and Motion is coming to an end and we are almost to the point to bring our science to life through STEM. Next week students will have an independent test on forces and motion. Students have been working hard on learning to complete notes, labs and journal entries for the first 6 weeks of school in a timely manner. Students can use this valuable resource to complete their independent test if they choose. Students will have one day to complete any incomplete notes, activities and labs, and then they will test the second day of science next week. I know that the students will do amazing things.
Academic Language We Are Using This Week
energy, force, speed, collision, collide, transfer, potential, kinetic, mechanical, thermal, sound ,energy transformation
A huge Hilltop THANK YOU to our wonderful parent volunteers for serving as your grade-level Class Captains! Please be sure to join the 4th Grade Group on the St. Luke’s App to stay connected and receive important updates and communication throughout the year.
