I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and congratulate our Year 12 students following the completion of their HSC Trial Examinations. These examinations are an important milestone in their senior schooling journey, and I have been extremely proud of the commitment and perseverance demonstrated by our students throughout this period.

The way our Year 12 cohort has supported one another and approached the challenges of the Trial Examinations reflects the strong sense of community that we value at St Benedict’s. Their willingness to encourage and support their peers has been particularly pleasing to see.

With the Trials now behind them, our Year 12 students can turn their attention towards their final preparations for the HSC examinations. I encourage them to remain focused, make the most of the support available to them and continue to approach their studies with confidence and determination.

To our Year 12 students, please know that the entire St Benedict’s community is behind you. We are proud of what you have achieved so far and look forward to celebrating your continued efforts and successes in the months ahead.

Wellbeing Week Wellbeing Week

Next week, our focus turns to an area that is central to the life of our College — wellbeing. We are pleased to celebrate our annual Wellbeing Week, providing an opportunity for our students and staff to reflect on the importance of caring for our mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.

Wellbeing plays an important role in our ability to learn, grow, build positive relationships and thrive as individuals. Throughout the week, a range of activities and resources will be available to encourage healthy habits, promote positive wellbeing and provide practical strategies that students and staff can incorporate into their everyday lives. I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to participate and reflect on the ways we can continue to prioritise our wellbeing.

Please note that Friday 21 August is a Staff Development Day - no students on site.

Student Leadership Student Leadership

As the class of 2026 approach their final weeks here at the College, next week the opportunity for 2027 Student Leadership has been launched with Year 11 students.

Student leaders play a pivotal role in representing our school, and working closely with staff, students and the wider community to build spirit and continue to ensure the success of the College.

In our STRIVE meeting this week Year 11 students were encouraged to engage in conversations with their STRIVE coaches and class teachers about the character strengths they possess that make them a fitting leader.

Students were also encouraged to reflect on the range of co-curricular opportunities they have embraced as part of College life over their time here, that reflect their suitability for a Student Leadership role.

This is encouragement for all of our students to take opportunities to engage in opportunities at all stages of their time here at SBCC. Furthermore, students are encouraged to reflect on the reason they are given positive feedback and encouragement from teachers, in order to recognise their own personal strengths.

As a school community, we know that every minute of the school day matters. Being on time to school demonstrates a readiness to learn, and ensures important messages are received. Furthermore, attendance at STRIVE helps to build connection and belonging.

A reminder to all parents and students that the expected arrival time to school is before 8.05am.

Students should be at STRIVE classrooms ready for the start of the day by 8.10am.

An essential element in addressing attendance is partnership between home and school. Please reach out to your child’s STRIVE coach or Year Coordinator if you would like to discuss supporting your child’s punctuality to school further.

Feast of the Assumption of Mary Feast of the Assumption of Mary

The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, each year on 15 August.

On this special feast day, we remember and celebrate our Catholic belief that, at the end of her earthly life, Mary was taken body and soul into Heaven to share fully in the life and glory of God.

Mary’s Assumption reminds us of the hope of eternal life and the promise that God’s love brings us to new life. Mary’s faithful “yes” to God throughout her life is an example of trust, courage and faith for us all.

In the Magnificat, Mary rejoices in God’s goodness by exclaiming:

“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.”

— Luke 1:46–47

As we celebrate this beautiful feast, let us follow Mary’s example by trusting God, recognising His goodness and bringing His love and hope to others.

Loving God,

we thank you for the gift of Mary

and celebrate her glorious Assumption into Heaven.

Like Mary, help us to say yes to you,

to trust in your love,

and to live with courage, compassion and hope.

May Mary’s example inspire us

to recognise your goodness in our lives

and to bring your love to those around us.

“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.”

May our lives proclaim your greatness

today and every day.

Amen.

Our Year 8 students recently had the wonderful opportunity to share their learning about the Saints with Year 3 students from St Justin’s. As part of their Disciples, Martyrs and Witnesses to the Faith unit, Year 8 students have explored the lives and faith of the Saints in depth.

Connecting beautifully with Year 3’s current unit on Saints, Year 8 students visited the Year 3 classrooms to share their knowledge, stories and insights. Using their Saints Infographic posters, our Year 8 students became teachers for the lesson, helping our younger students discover how the Saints lived out their faith and inspired others.

It was a wonderful opportunity for students across both year groups to learn from one another, share their faith and celebrate the lives of the Saints together.

Pen, Paper, and Core Skills: Strengthening Literacy and Numeracy Pen, Paper, and Core Skills: Strengthening Literacy and Numeracy

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

You may have recently seen media coverage surrounding the renewed focus on traditional handwriting following national NAPLAN results. At our College, we are actively addressing this need. While digital tools, AI, and online platforms bring incredible advantages to our classrooms, we firmly believe that core foundational skills remain irreplaceable learning superpowers.

A Deliberate Focus on Core Foundations

To ensure our students thrive, we are placing a deliberate focus on strengthening three essential pillars across all subjects:

  • Grammar & Punctuation: Explicitly guiding students in structure, mechanics, and clarity so they can articulate complex ideas with accuracy and confidence.

  • Numeracy: Building strong mathematical reasoning, problem-solving habits, and clear working out on paper alongside digital tools.

  • Handwriting: Research consistently shows that handwriting acts as a cognitive engine. Putting pen to paper helps students retain concepts longer and engage more deeply, whether working through a maths equation or drafting an essay.

How You Can Help: The Daily Pencil Case Check

Arriving ready to learn builds independence and ensures lessons start smoothly. Please support your child by checking that they have these basic essentials packed every day:

  • Pens & Pencils: Standard blue/black writing pens and lead pencils.

  • Highlighters: For active reading and key note-taking.

  • Ruler & Eraser: Essential for neat, structured work across all subjects.

Having the right equipment reduces classroom interruptions, fosters personal responsibility, and helps every student get the most out of every period.

As the educational landscape evolves, we remain committed to balancing modern technology with timeless skills. Tech opens doors, but strong literacy, numeracy, and handwriting build the ultimate foundation—because mastering the basics will always be key to success in school and life.

Feast Day Celebrations

A highlight of the week will be our Feast Day Celebration on Thursday, which will bring our community together for Feast Day Mass, the Merit Awards ceremony, Feast Day stalls and rides, and Bennie’s Got Talent.

Students are reminded that they should wear their Full Winter Uniform for Mass and the Merit Awards ceremony. Students may bring appropriate House mufti clothing to change into afterwards.

Students wishing to participate in the Feast Day stalls and activities will require Bennie’s Bucks. Families are encouraged to pre-purchase Bennie’s Bucks through Compass to help minimise queues on the day. Bundles are available in $5, $10 and $20 amounts with pre-purchases closing this Sunday 16th August at 11.59pm. Click this link so you don't miss out: https://sbccdow-nsw.compass.education/Organise/Activities/Events/ Beyond this date the only way to be able to purchase Bennie’s Bucks will be the morning of Feast Day using cash or EFTPOS, as well as throughout the event.

Please note that unused Bennie’s Bucks are non-refundable.

We look forward to a wonderful week that places wellbeing, positive intention and connection at the heart of College life.

Last Friday at lunch, our Year 9 Commerce students showcased their entrepreneurial skills by running 16 vibrant market stalls for the school community. The stalls offered a fantastic variety of treats, including loaded donuts, lollies on a stick, loaded fries, refreshing drinks, brownies, chocolate-coated strawberries, and loaded strawberry cups.

The event attracted a wonderful turnout, with students and staff eagerly supporting the initiative. Every stall completely sold out, highlighting both the quality of the products and the outstanding efforts of our Year 9 students.

Through their planning, teamwork and customer service, the students gained valuable real-world business experience while raising funds for a worthy cause. We are proud to announce that the market stalls generated an over $650 in profit, which will be donated to charity.

Congratulations to all of our Year 9 Commerce students for their hard work, creativity and enthusiasm. Thank you also to the staff and students who supported the event and helped make it such a memorable success.

Year 8 Medieval History Incursion Year 8 Medieval History Incursion

On Friday 31 July the Year 8 History incursion was an exciting and enjoyable opportunity for our year group to learn about Medieval Europe in a unique and hands-on way. Moving beyond textbooks and screens we could see, touch and interact with artifacts from the past which made the information much more engaging and interesting.

The best part was the chance to put on the armour of different eras, and feel what the soldiers of those times felt. Year 8 got the opportunity to see and touch all kinds of equipment such as shields, helmets, and weaponry.

Additionally the practical activities made our time exciting as we were able to be apart of the learning, we got the chance to get familiar with different weapons and the way they were used, and we were given the opportunity to ask questions and interact with the historic items, helping us better understand what we have been learning about in class. It was particularly interesting to feel the weight of the armour and how different types of weapons and clothing were made to protect soldiers in battle.

Overall, the incursion was a great way to bring what we have been learning about in class to life. The hands-on activities helped us understand Medieval Europe in a more interesting and memorable way, while also showing us what life was like for people during this time period.

Year 7 students recently enjoyed an interactive session on Animal Classification and Adaptations, hosted byTaronga Zoomobile. During the engaging hour-long workshop, students discovered how various creatures survive and thrive in their environments. Highlights included hands-on encounters with a snake, a shingleback lizard, blue-tongue lizard and a ring-tailed possum, alongside close-up observations of a leaf insect (phasmid), and a beautiful tree frog. The presenters kept students fully engaged, answering questions and sharing fascinating insights throughout the event. It was wonderful to see so many students sharing their own experiences and knowledge about animals with their group.

We hope students have come away with great ideas for their upcoming Science assessment task.

On Wednesday 12 August, our Year 8 students attended the live performance The Hurting Game, a powerful and engaging performance presented by Brainstorm Productions.

Through a combination of humour, relatable characters, and real-life scenarios, the performance encouraged students to think deeply about the impact of bullying, cyberbullying, peer pressure, and the importance of treating others with kindness and respect. The actors delivered important messages in a way that resonated strongly with students, prompting reflection on how our words and actions can affect those around us.

The performance also highlighted the value of empathy, resilience, and speaking up when someone needs support. Students were encouraged to consider the positive role they can play in creating inclusive and respectful communities, both at school and online.

Year 11 Design and Technology have been working hard of late in class, constructing their scaled architectural models for our Urban Furniture unit.

For their second task in Preliminary Design and Technology, students have been tasked with designing an urban furniture piece for the forecourt of the newly refurbished Camden Civic Centre.

The urban seat must be made from sustainable materials and use the design characteristic of dematerialisation, modularity or disassembly to drive innovative creations.

Students have been 3D printing, laser cutting, painting and mould making for their models. They are really starting to look like the real setting.

Well done Year 11 and keep up the great work.

Club Sandwiches into Ratios and Fractions! Club Sandwiches into Ratios and Fractions!

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map Show in original size

Who says mathematics only happens on paper? During Week 2, our Year 11 Numeracy class traded in their workbooks for cutting boards and aprons to explore a delicious real-world application of math - the ultimate triple-decker club sandwich. While assembling layers of toasted bread, turkey, bacon, lettuce, and tomatoes might look like a simple lunch, our students discovered that culinary success comes down to mastering fractions, ratios, and scaling.

1. Fractions and Geometry in Every Cut

The iconic club sandwich relies on symmetry and fractional distribution:

  • Parts of a Whole: A completed club sandwich starts as 1 whole. Slicing it diagonally across both axes creates 4 congruent triangular quarters (¼).

  • Fraction Addition: Eating two quarters equals 2/4 or 1/2 of the total meal.

  • Geometric Angles: Securing each quadrant with a toothpick before making two 90° diagonal cuts ensures equal weight distribution without squishing the layers.

2. Layering with Ratios

A proper club sandwich requires the right structural harmony. Students explored ratios to ensure balance:

  • Bread to Filling Ratio (3:2): A classic club uses 3 slices of toasted bread for every 2 distinct layers of filling.

  • Spread Proportions (2:1): To prevent soggy bread while maintaining flavour, students calculated a spread ratio depending on their ingredients chosen.

3. Recipe Scaling and Proportions

Moving from a single recipe to catering scale tested students' practical multiplication skills:

"It’s easy to double a recipe in your head, but scaling a single sandwich recipe up to feed 5 people—and adjusting for wholesale loaf sizes so we didn't waste money or food—showed us how math directly impacts budgeting." Student who wished to remain anonymous.

Year 11 Numeracy focuses on practical math skills that prepare students for everyday life, vocational pathways, and financial independence. Whether calculating unit prices at the grocery store, estimating catering quantities, or dividing portions fairly, understanding fractions and ratios is an essential everyday tool.

At the end of Term 2, 8B English wrote poetry about the novel Holes by Louis Sacher. Here are some examples of their work:

Camp Green Lake

The sun was a giant furnace in the sky,

Burning the earth until it seemed to cry.

The lake was gone and not a drop remained;

Only dust and heat endlessly reigned.

Shovels bit the ground day after day

While the boys dug their lives away.

The desert stretched forever and a mile,

Yet hope stayed hidden all the while.

The wind whispered secrets through the sand

Like ghosts wandering across the land.

By B. Orazi

Careful clues connected the past

Secrets hidden that could not last.

Stanley found the buried treasure,

Bringing his family show and pleasure.

The curse was broken, luck returned,

A valuable lesson was finally learned.

By L. Castelli

Stanley’s Journey

Stanley arrived with fear in his heart,

Unsure of where his future would start.

Camp Green Lake was a prison of dust,

Where survival depended on courage and trust.

The dry wind carried sand through the air,

The heat pressed down with a heavy stare.

Each day he grew stronger than before,

Learning what friendship was truly for.

The Year 10 MISA Public Speaking competition took place last Thursday 6 August and was a wonderful showcase of confidence, creativity and outstanding communication skills from a variety of schools. Our students - Isabella Morvillo and Roberto Warden - represented themselves and our school with great pride, demonstrating that they are not only talented speakers but also thoughtful and engaging young people.

The competition challenged students to prepare and deliver a speech on a topic of their own choosing before facing the additional challenge of an impromptu speech. This year’s impromptu topic, “What are your dreams for the future?”, encouraged students to think on their feet and share their ideas with authenticity and confidence.

The adjudicators were particularly impressed by the depth and variety of the students’ prepared speeches. The standard of competition was excellent, with all students demonstrating impressive preparation, poise and a willingness to challenge themselves. Public speaking requires courage, quick thinking and the ability to connect with an audience, and our Year 10 representatives embraced every aspect of the experience.

We congratulate both of these students on their outstanding efforts. They represented our school with confidence, maturity and pride, and should be incredibly proud of the way they rose to the challenge. Well done to our fantastic Year 10 MISA Public Speakers!

We encourage all students to check the new timetables for their school on our website: https://nsw.transitsystems.com.au/schools to confirm any changes to their journey.

Students can also check timetables at https://transportnsw.info/routes/bus or use the Trip Planner at https://transportnsw.info/trip#/trip to check the times of the bus(es) they catch. Be sure to change the date in the options (to 1 December or later), and if using the Trip Planner, click “refine” and add “school bus” to ensure dedicated school services appear as a travel option.

We hope this information assists.

Protect Your Child This Winter – Free Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine Available Protect Your Child This Winter – Free Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine Available

User uploaded image

As we move through the winter respiratory illness season, NSW Health is encouraging families to take simple steps to protect themselves and others from influenza (flu).

Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can spread quickly in schools and other settings where people are in close contact. While many people recover at home, influenza can cause serious illness and complications, particularly in young children. Vaccination remains the best protection against severe illness and hospitalisation.

Free Nasal Spray Vaccine for Children and Teenagers Free Nasal Spray Vaccine for Children and Teenagers

NSW Health is offering a free nasal spray influenza vaccine for children and young people aged 2 to 17 years for a limited time. The vaccine is:

  • Needle-free and painless.

  • Given as a quick spray into each nostril.

  • Approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

  • Available through participating GPs, pharmacies and Aboriginal Medical Services while supplies last.

The nasal spray vaccine provides families with an alternative option for children who may be anxious about needles and aims to increase protection against influenza across the community.

Why Vaccination Matters Why Vaccination Matters

Children can become seriously ill from influenza and can also spread the virus to family members and others in the community. Schools are environments where respiratory illnesses can spread easily, making vaccination an important step in reducing illness and absenteeism during winter.

Parents and carers can access information and resources from NSW Health:

We encourage all families to consider vaccination and speak with their GP, pharmacist or Aboriginal Medical Service about the most appropriate option for their child.
