Message from the Principal, Dr. Andre Bala Message from the Principal, Dr. Andre Bala

Dear Smoky Hill Community,

I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for the incredible energy and support that made Mentor Madness such a meaningful celebration for our students and staff. Events like this reflect the very best of Smoky Hill and remind us how fortunate we are to be part of a school community that values connection, encouragement, and belonging.

That same spirit is at the heart of our continued commitment to the Sources of Strength SEL curriculum. At Smoky Hill, we believe strongly in the importance of every student having trusted adults in their lives and in building a culture where support, resilience, and connection are part of the everyday student experience. Thank you to our staff, families, and mentors for helping us reinforce these important messages.

I also want to extend a special thank you to our senior parents and families for your participation in this week’s Senior Parent Meetings. Your partnership and involvement are so important as we work together to support the Class of 2026 through this exciting final stretch of the school year.

As we look ahead, please remember that PSAT, SAT, and CMAS Science testing will take place on April 15 and 16. Thank you in advance for helping students arrive rested, prepared, and ready to do their best.

Finally, as some in our community observe Passover and Easter, I want to extend warm wishes to all who honor these important traditions. May this season bring peace, reflection, and time with loved ones.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for all you do to make Smoky Hill such a strong and supportive community.

Warmly,

Dr. Andre Bala

Upcoming State Testing on 4/15 and 4/16

We would like to share important information about our upcoming spring assessments. These tests provide valuable insight into student learning and help prepare students for future academic opportunities.

On April 15th, 10th-grade students will take the PSAT 10, and 11th-grade students will take the SAT. These assessments measure college readiness in reading, writing, and math, and the SAT is commonly used as part of the college admissions process. 9th and 12th grade students do not attend school on this day.

On April 16th, 9th-grade students will take the PSAT 8/9, which serves as an early indicator of college readiness and helps guide academic planning. On the same day, 11th-grade students will take the CMAS Science assessment, which evaluates students’ understanding of scientific concepts and practices. 10th and 12th grade students do not attend school on this day.

Testing will begin promptly at 8:20 a.m. each day, and students will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m. Buses will run on their normal morning routes, with departure from campus at 12:00 p.m. A late bus at 3:40 p.m. will also be available. Grab-and-go lunch options will be provided for students. There are no afternoon classes on either April 15th or 16th.

Please note that students who arrive after 8:50 a.m. will not be permitted to test and will need to participate in a makeup session. If a family chooses to opt their student out of testing, a parent or guardian can fill out the form linked here.

We appreciate your support in helping students arrive on time, prepared, and ready to do their best. If you have any questions, please email Assistant Principal Caitlyn Fox at cfox2@cherrycreekschools.org

Athletic Field Policy Reminder

Dear Smoky Hill Community,

We hope this message finds you well and enjoying your time here at Smoky Hill. As part of our ongoing commitment to safety and well-being, I want to take a moment to clarify an important school policy regarding the use of our outdoor athletic fields.

Please be aware that students are not permitted to access any of the outdoor athletic fields without the direct supervision of Smoky Hill High School staff. This policy aligns with Cherry Creek School District Board Policies, which are designed to ensure a secure environment for all students across the district.

Students who violate this policy will receive school disciplinary consequences.

We understand how important these spaces are for sports and recreation, and we truly value the positive energy they bring to our campus. However, these facilities must be used responsibly and under proper supervision to help prevent accidents, misuse, or potential injury.

Whether you're participating in practice, a PE class, or another school-sponsored activity, our staff is here to support students and ensure that everyone remains safe. If you ever have questions about when and how the fields can be used, please don’t hesitate to speak with a teacher, coach, or administrator.

Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us maintain a safe and respectful environment for everyone at Smoky Hill. We’re proud of the responsibility and care our students demonstrate, and we appreciate your understanding of this important guideline.

Sincerely,

Dr. Andre Bala

Principal, Smoky Hill High School

We are offering multiple levels of sponsorship and donation opportunities, making it easy for businesses and individuals to contribute at a level that is meaningful for them. Every gift, large or small, makes a difference. Please pass this information along to friends, families, and businesses. It would be a great time to get a team together with other Smoky Hill staff. SHHS Juniors

On April 15, all SHHS juniors will take the SAT at school for FREE. To help you prepare, Khan Academy offers free, personalized SAT prep in partnership with the College Board. You can access practice questions, full-length exams, and customized study plans at www.khanacademy.org/sat.

While many colleges and universities have adopted test-optional policies, some institutions still require SAT or ACT scores for admission. In addition, certain scholarship programs—such as the Daniels Fund—may require official test scores as part of the application process.

If you are planning to take an additional SAT (other than the FREE April test), upcoming test dates and registration information can be found on the College Board website. For information about the ACT, including registration and test dates, please visit the ACT website.

Please note that there is a fee to register for the SAT or ACT. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch are eligible for a fee waiver. If you believe you qualify, please get in touch with your counselor to request one.

Scholarship Opportunities for SHHS Seniors

The counseling office has compiled a list of scholarship opportunities for SHHS seniors. This list is updated daily, and we strongly encourage students to review it frequently, check eligibility requirements, and apply as soon as possible.

REPEATED INFORMATION REPEATED INFORMATION

Restoom Loitering

Dear Smoky Hill Community,

As we approach the end of the third quarter, excitement is already building among our students for the upcoming Spring Break. It’s a special time filled with joy, relaxation, and rejuvenation.

However, I would like to take a moment to address a growing concern at Smoky Hill: restroom loitering. Restroom loitering is when a student is in a restroom without using it for its intended purpose, including lingering, gathering with others, socializing, or remaining in the area for an extended period of time. This has become a problem at our school and at many schools across the country. At Smoky Hill, this has led to unsafe conditions, increased the likelihood of vaping, conflict, and vandalism, and has prevented students who need to use the restroom from doing so quickly and comfortably.

I want to be clear: Restroom loitering is not permitted and will no longer be tolerated at Smoky Hill High School. Any student found loitering in the restroom will be in direct violation of school rules and CCSD Board Policy JICDA (Student Conduct and Discipline Code, section I-5 ).

Beginning March 2, Smoky Hill High School will take immediate disciplinary action when students are found loitering in restrooms, including suspension.

Our restrooms must remain safe, clean, and accessible for every student, every period, every day. This stance is not about punishment for its own sake. It’s about protecting students’ well-being, ensuring a respectful environment, and making sure restrooms serve their intended purpose: a quick, private, and secure space for students to attend to basic biological needs.

Parents, I encourage you to have a conversation with your student about this communication and proper restroom behaviors. I also urge our students who struggle in making thoughtful, healthy choices to seek support from the school mental health team (School Counselors, Social Workers, School Psychiatrists, and Substance Abuse Specialist).

Thank you for your partnership as we strengthen expectations and keep Smoky Hill a safe and supportive place for all students.

Dr. Andre Bala

Principal, Smoky Hill High School

After School Student Pickup-South Parking Lot

Smoky Hill High School Community,

Beginning this semester, the north parking lot (located on E. Smoky Hill Rd.) will no longer be accessible for after-school student pickup. To ensure a safe and efficient dismissal process, all after-school student pickup will take place in the south parking lot (located on E. Buffalo Way).

We appreciate your partnership as we make this adjustment. Shifting pickup to one designated area will help us improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and support a smoother, safer experience for students, families, and staff.

Thank you for your cooperation and flexibility. We are grateful for your continued support as we work to keep our campus operations running safely and smoothly.

Warm regards,

Dr. Andre Bala | Principal, Smoky Hill High School

Buff Pantry

As a class, we have aimed to make a difference in our Smoky Hill community, and we decided to do this by creating a safe space where students can receive the food and hygiene products they need on a weekly basis. We offer multiple types of food, whether it’s canned/boxed or just quick snacks, hygiene products, baby products (diapers/wipes), and clothes/shoes. We receive donations from SECOR, the local community, students, and our CCSD district Food Pantry Liaisons. Last year, we were able to serve 70 families in total. Our goal is to limit food insecurity and strengthen our school holistically.

If you are in need: Here is the Buff's Pantry Google form link for you to fill out with your needs:https://forms.gle/NoraXVqzbxUYT4B8A

If you wish to donate: We are in need of the following items if you have any spare stock in your home or wish to purchase items from our list:

https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2O6R74E3W2244?ref_=wl_share

Also, you can have your student drop these off at the main office or bring them to Mrs. Ogide's room (1-11). We will also be running donation drives throughout the year. Stay tuned!
