Right now, our class is sitting near the VERY BOTTOM of the leaderboard đŸ˜± — and we can’t let that happen! Let’s turn this around and show everyone what we’re made of!

Every single donation gets us closer to a Classroom T.P. Party when we hit $1,500 — yes, the kids get to cover our classroom (and ME!) in toilet paper!! đŸ€Ș

Set up your child’s fundraising page on Handbid using this link, and send it to grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, coworkers, and friends all over the country.

Donations are due September 26th — and we need a big push NOW to catch up!
Let’s flood that leaderboard and give our kids a celebration they’ll never forget!!

Fall Conferences! Fall Conferences!

Our Fall Conferences will be held September 30 – October 2. A SignUpGenius link has been shared for you to choose a time that works best for your family. If none of the available times fit your schedule, please don’t hesitate to email me so we can find another option before or after school.

Conferences are such an important opportunity for us to connect as parent and teacher to celebrate your child’s growth and discuss how we can continue supporting them this year. I truly value this partnership and look forward to meeting with each of you!

Wednesday, October 1st is our official attendance count day for the school year. This count helps determine the funding our school receives for our yearly budget, so it’s very important that all students are present and on time.

Please avoid scheduling appointments or arriving late on this day. Having every student here and ready to learn that morning will make a big difference for our school community. Thank you for helping us make sure our Owls are all present and accounted for!

Outdoor Ed and King Soopers! Outdoor Ed and King Soopers!

Hello 5th Grade Families!

Just a reminder that 5th graders will be going to Outdoor Ed during the Spring of 2026! More details are to come with the trip but we want to make sure you are set up with the King Soopers Community Rewards now, which can be used towards your child’s Outdoor Ed costs.

What you need to do: Make sure your King Soopers card is raising money for Heritage PTO.

Here are steps to set this up:

1. Sign into your digital King Soopers account

2. Click on MY ACCOUNT and select COMMUNITY REWARDS on the left side of the page.

3. If it already shows Heritage Elementary School PTO, you are already signed up and no further action is needed. If you need to sign up, you can search for Heritage Elementary School PTO or use our code JP355. Make sure it shows exactly as written or it won't go to our school.

4. Shop as normal at King Soopers and watch the funds add up!

What to do later: Every quarter you can take a screenshot of your Community Rewards contribution. You can keep track of it yourself or send it to the email address: ptoheritage.outdoored@gmail.com.

You can also request King Soopers to send you your rewards for all of 2025 in a report. This is an easy way to get your totals and we will request this report (or the screen shots) next Spring.

This is a great way to raise money for our school and to help offset some of the Outdoor Ed costs for your family!

If you have any questions, please email ptoheritage.outdoored@gmail.com.

Thank you!

Heritage PTO

What We Are Learning What We Are Learning

Reading

In reading, we are diving into the inspiring true story One Hen by Katie Smith Milway. This book tells how a small loan helped a young boy in Ghana build a business and change his entire community.

During the first part of our unit, students are learning important new vocabulary (like afford, loan, profit, prosper, risk, savings, scarce, and wages) through interactive games and practice activities.

As we continue reading, students are also working on plot structure, identifying the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution of the story. To wrap up, they will write a short constructed response using our TIDE writing strategy, explaining how Kojo changes from the beginning to the end of the book using text evidence to support their ideas.

Math

In math, we are learning how to add and subtract decimals—a skill we’ll use often in real life! Students are using estimation to check if their answers make sense and building their understanding with visual models (like base-ten blocks and place value grids) to see how decimals work. These strategies are helping us focus on place value and accuracy as we solve problems.

Our next unit will focus on multiplication with large whole numbers! Students will build on their basic multiplication skills to learn strategies for multiplying multi-digit numbers. We’ll focus on understanding place value, lining up numbers correctly, and showing work neatly and accurately. This unit will help students become confident and fluent with larger calculations they’ll use in later topics like decimals and division.

Writing

Our young writers are diving into the ocean’s energy cycle this week! Students are learning how producers, consumers, and decomposers all play an important role in moving energy through ocean ecosystems.

We’re using this science content to strengthen our informational writing skills — organizing our essays into clear paragraphs for each group, weaving in science vocabulary from the text, and practicing how to explain why our evidence matters (a skill we call “Detailed Examination”).

We’re excited to see our writers growing as both scientists and authors!

Social Studies/Science

Our classroom is buzzing with excitement as we get ready for our Young AmeriTowne field trip! Students are exploring real-world skills like investing, budgeting, and managing money wisely. They are also learning about the power of campaigning and leadership as they prepared for our general elections for towne judge.

This hands-on preparation is helping students build financial literacy, public speaking, and decision-making skills they will use for years to come. We can’t wait to see all of their hard work pay off on our big day at Young AmeriTowne!
