"Inspection Worthy Mistakes" - Episode 83

I make mistakes. You make mistakes. Students make mistakes. The goal is that we can all learn from our mistakes and the mistakes of others. Have you ever thought about showcasing these mistakes during math? When you allow students to critique someone's work and share how the person should have solved it, you will likely get them talking! Critique problems can be used in any grade with any type of problem. There is power in asking "what should they have done?"

Here are some ways you can incorporate error analysis with what you're teaching this week:

  • PreK: writing your numbers backwards or skipping a number when counting
  • K: subtracting numbers using a tens frame but accidentally showing BOTH numbers
  • 1st: reading an addition word problem but accidentally subtracting the numbers
  • 2nd: measuring an object starting at the end of the ruler rather than at 0 cm
  • 3rd: finding equivalent fractions on a number line but the 0 and 1 aren't lined up
  • 4th: adding fractions with models when the denominators aren't the same
  • 5th: multiplying two fractions but not using the same model to show __ OF __

"Investigating mistakes in math class can help build student learning. Some students who are unwilling to discuss thier own thinking about mathematics are willing to investigate and discuss other people's mistakes. There is a lot of benefit to getting students talking in math class."

Leap Day Pattern Challenge Leap Day Pattern Challenge

Leap Day is Thursday! CLICK HERE to check-out Stevey Wyborney's Leap Day Pattern Challenge series. His website includes links to quick videos as well as a recording sheet that you can print off and work to solve the overall pattern that will be revealed on Thursday. This would be a great work plan activity for older students or whole group number talk activity for 1st through 5th graders.

Leap Day Recording Sheets Leap Day Recording Sheets

Y'all know I'm gonna beg, borrow, and steal from my momma who has gone back to work and is now teaching second grade. CLICK HERE to open a recording sheet you can use on Thursday to have your students represent 29 in many different ways. There are multiple versions depending on your class' level. I would use these for morning work, my number talk, or a math station.

MAP Scores on DreamBox MAP Scores on DreamBox

I am almost finished inputting all of our students' Winter MAP scores on DreamBox. Students will notice a little blue calendar icon next to the lessons that are related to their MAP scores. All other lessons will continue to be generated based on a student's personalized DreamBox plan. My goal is for this to be finished by Tuesday morning. If you don't see this by mid-week, please reach out!

Pro Tip: I would encourage my students to look for the blue calendar icons. See the picture below!

Preparing for SC Ready Math Preparing for SC Ready Math

If you are a third, fourth, or fifth grade teacher, please CLICK HERE to review the newly released Test Data Review Report for SC Ready. We will look through this document during our planning meetings this week, but I want you to have a chance to look over this ahead of time. The general observations and comments are included below. The document includes grade level specific information.

What is the Test Data Review Report?

On October 23, 2023, Data Recognition Corporation (DRC) and the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) Office of Assessment and Standards (OAS) convened a panel of educators to review item data from the SC READY assessment of the 2015 South Carolina College- and CareerReady Math Standards. The panel discussed and analyzed items from the 2023 assessment, including information about how students performed on each item. The panel recognizes the hard work of South Carolina educators and offers these relevant and useful suggestions for improving instruction as an addendum to those from previous years. This was released on January 30, 2024.

Q3 Instructional Slides Update Q3 Instructional Slides Update

Math coaches have been creating instructional slides for all standards. The goal is for these slides to be student-facing to help make sure you are teaching to the level of the standard and not over or under teaching. These slides are aligned to learning targets and common assessments and include material lists, teacher notes for instructional delivery, mini-lesson slides, independent practice activities, and debrief questions. These are a great starting point for you as you plan.

All Q3 slides are published with the exception of:

  • K.ATO.1 (11 instructional days) - Katie Sidney Creating Now
  • K.G.4 (7 instructional days)
  • 1.ATO.8 (4 instructional days) - Tanner Slagle Creating Now
