Spotlight on Reading
Program Spotlight May 2026
The Program Spotlight is a series of informal interviews with different groups of educators at Legacy Academy. Our teachers and paras have implemented the Capturing Kids’ Hearts process of classroom management and if you attend an event at the school, you will likely hear references to our "good things" activity from this program. We appreciated the time that these educators have taken during their planning time to answer a few questions about the "good things" that are happening in their programs. Be on the lookout for more videos over the summer and fall!
This kickoff edition of Program Spotlight is shining on our reading specialist, Amy Hancock and our reading paraprofessional, Misty O’Neal. This team is helping our students develop confidence and become strong readers.
Making Reading Fun
Reading is about the world around us! Fun lessons include movement, music, games and letter parties. Strategic lessons with integrated fun time help retain information and foster pride in the learning process.
Wall Buddies for Fluency & Accuracy
Mrs. Hancock attended a conference and brought back some tools to improve reading skills. We are thankful for all of our teachers who strive to continue learning and put new techniques and ideas into practice to improve student success.

Student Success Stories
The collaboration between programs has allowed teachers to recognize opportunities to try new methods that improved student confidence.
Reading Aloud at Home & Summer Reading Program
Reading to your child and having your child read aloud is a helpful tool to monitor progress in addition to the reports and notes sent home from the reading specialists.
Summer time has finally come! It has been a wonderful school year full of lots of learning! There is a phenomenon in education called “the summer slide”. According to research, students can lose up to three months of reading skills and one month of math skills without consistent practice during the summer.
Every student will be sent home with a summer reading log. You can also complete your local library’s summer reading program and it counts too. Please sign the bottom of the reading log to verify that your child did in fact read over the summer.
Packets will be optional this year. You can ask your student's teacher or Mrs. Hancock for a digital copy to be emailed to you. We can also send home a physical packet if you would like.
We will be having a summer literacy night in July. Students can bring their May and June reading logs to the event for a prize. If they complete July and August reading logs, they can turn them in the fall and they will be invited to a party!
Thank you for entrusting us with your children. We hope everyone has a wonderful summer--and don’t forget to read!
