Developing Religious Literacy using Teaching About Judaism as a Case Study
A virtual training brought to you by Region 12 over exposure to the world’s religious traditions is critical for students as they move toward becoming global citizens. Focusing on the NCSS’s C3 Supplement on Teaching about Religion, this interactive session explores the legal foundations in the United States for teaching about religion, uses case studies to consider the very real challenges involved in teaching this topic, and provides guidelines and digital options for incorporating the study of religion into instruction.
During the session, we will explore one of the world’s oldest religions as a case study through learning about Judaism’s beliefs, behaviors, and experiences of belonging and examine a framework for teaching about all religions to cultivate religious literacy.
From Parliament to Congress: Founding Documents and the Evolution of Article I
Join Law-Related Education to examine the foundational documents and actions of the founders to better understand Article I as a foundation for the modern Congress. This session will include a study of the Articles of Confederation and the compromises at the Constitutional Convention, how redistricting and voter behavior has influenced Congressional elections, and the notion of legislative supremacy. Participants will enjoy both scholarly instruction and hands-on lessons and strategies that allow learners to engage with the content. Target audience: U.S. History (8th and EOC) and Government teachers.
Region 4: Teaching with Impact: A Best Practices Summit for Social Studies (July 17th)
Are you looking for ways to build your capacity as a social studies educator and discover ways to unlock your students' full potential? This intensive summit will equip you with practical strategies to implement and/or support effective, evidence-based best practices in your social studies classroom. We invite all K-12 Social Studies teachers, instructional leaders, and administrators to join us for this collaborative and interactive professional learning experience. By attending, you'll gain a deeper understanding of key pedagogical approaches, develop actionable strategies for your classroom, and leave inspired to create engaging and effective learning experiences for ALL Social Studies students.
Summit Focus:
- CBLI (Content-Based Language Instruction): Integrate language development into your Social Studies curriculum to enhance student comprehension and communication skills.
- Lesson Internalization: Explore a process to help teachers better understand any lesson's content and how to teach it.
- Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Learn how to create more inclusive and accessible learning experiences for all students by incorporating UDL principles into your lesson planning.
- Evidence-Based Writing and Discussion: Equip students with the skills to analyze primary sources, construct sound arguments, and effectively communicate their understanding through well-supported written work and oral discussion.
