Summer Update #3 - 08/07/26
August 7, 2026
A Back to School Prayer ๐
Blessed are you, Lord God, Creator of body, mind, and heart.
You send the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people.
At the start of this new school year, we ask you to bless our students, teachers, and staff.
Help us grow together in faith, hope, and love.
Expand our minds to learn, deepen our love for truth, and open our hearts to help those in need.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL ๐
Dear Bruin Family,
I remember the feeling I felt as a little kid when we were days away from school. I remember the excitement of placing the new box of 24 Crayola Crayons in the cart, picking out my new pencil case, and, oh what joy it was when I finally got to the grade that allowed 3-ring binders!!! One joyous year, the school even approved Trapper Keepers and it was like Christmas in August! But my favorite pre-school family tradition of all was the yearly visit to the Summer Tent sale at Chicks Sporting Goods to purchase a new pair of shoes for the school year (black and white only for our Catholic School, of course).
Now, as a parent myself and an administrator at a school, the preparations for the school year are quite different. While the responsibilities associated with these roles of mine do come with a certain stress and anxiety, they are no less exciting. There is something wonderful about these last weeks and days of summer and the anticipation of the year ahead. I hope that you and your child(ren) are eager and excited to get back to school. Our teachers are already hard at work preparing their classrooms and getting ready for the year ahead.
Next week we welcome everyone on Thursday, August 13th for the Supply Drop Off (9am-12pm), the Used Uniform Sale (4:30-6:00pm), our New Parent Orientation (5:30-6:00pm), and our Back to School Night (6:15pm). This evening is always a highlight, as it provides an opportunity to connect with teachers, learn about classroom expectations, and come together as a school family. It is a wonderful way to begin the year in partnership and unity.
We are very excited to see you all there and talk about the year ahead! In the meantime, may you enjoy these moments of anticipation with your little ones and may your stress levels be low as you help them prepare.
Sincerely,
Mr. Ryan Nearhoff

SPANISH UPDATE/SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING
Due to the fact that a suitable candidate did not come forward for the Spanish teacher position, we have yet to hire a Spanish teacher. We have decided to replace the Spanish classes with Social Emotional Learning for all grade levels. We will be utilizing two different curriculums. The first is already being taught in TK/K and is called Second Step. The second will be making a return to our classrooms and will be used for our 6th-8th grade students. This program is called Friendzy and is a faith-based SEL curriculum.
Both programs are being implemented to help teach our students essential life skills that will improve their relationships with friends, their ability to address conflict, and will help them improve academically. Please see below for a brief summary of each program.
SECOND STEP
The Second Step program is a widely used, evidence-based social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum for PreK through high school. It helps students build essential life and human skillsโlike empathy, emotion management, problem-solving, and communicationโto improve school climate and academic success.
FRIENDZY
Friendzy is a research-backed, faith-integrated character education and social-emotional learning program designed for K-8 students. The middle school tier features elevated lessons, age-relevant catchphrases, and dedicated student journals that target the unique relational and emotional challenges of early adolescence.

CALLING ALL COACHES ๐๐โฝ๐
As we begin preparing for the 2026-2027 school year, weโre excited to start building our
coaching teams for the upcoming sports season. The Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) offers
a wide range of sports across fall, winter and spring, and weโd love to get a head start by
identifying interested parent volunteers now.
If you have a passion for sports and enjoy working with students, we invite you to consider
coaching one of our teams. Early planning will help us stay ahead with registrations, scheduling,
and coach certifications so our athletes can have the best experience possible.
Coaching is a great way to fulfill your mandatory parent hours while making a meaningful impact
on our student athletes. All coaches will be required to have completed Virtus training. Early
commitment helps ensure all requirements are met in time for the season.
Fall Sports include:
- Girls Volleyball
- Flag Football
- Cross-Country (A, B, and C level)
Winter sports include:
- Girls & Boys Basketball
- Bowling
- Cheer, Song, or Dance (A, B, and C level)
Spring sports include:

CHILD SAFETY ๐จ
Did You Know?
August 8-9 || Characteristics of developmentally appropriate behaviors
It is important to distinguish normal, age-appropriate curiosity from concerning sexual behaviors that may be inappropriate or potentially abusive. In general, developmentally appropriate behaviors will be playful, curious, and will be enacted among similar age groups. While these behaviors are not ideal in play, and should be discussed with children, they are typically not causes for concern. These moments can also serve as opportunities to talk about boundaries, appropriate behaviors and safe adults. For more information, read the VIRTUSยฎ article โDifferentiating age-appropriate curiosity from harmful sexual behavior and abuse in elementary aged childrenโ at lacatholics.org/did-you-know.
Mission Statement
To educate TK-Eighth grade students in a Catholic environment in which the curriculum emphasizes spiritual, ethical, and social values of the Catholic faith to become responsible and moral citizens within the global community.
Philosophy
Supporting the belief that parents are the primary educators of their children, we as educators at St. Dorothy Catholic School, dedicate ourselves to partner with the parents in preparing children to become contributing members of the community. To achieve this, we provide holistic development in psychological, emotional, social and physical health, with an emphasis on academics, faith, and Christian service.
In collaboration with parents, we champion student achievement through the presentation, practice, and study of Catholic doctrine, a strong academic curriculum, multimedia and multi-cultural experiences, physical education, extracurricular programs, and the dedicated commitment of the teachers and staff.
