Important Notice: After-Hours Building Access for Athletics & Clubs
Please note that students participating in after-school clubs or athletics—especially for away events—may not have access to the school building if a coach or advisor is not present. Specifically, if a student returns to school with a parent before the team bus (and coach/advisor) arrives, the building may be locked and unstaffed.
If your student needs access to Bay View after hours, please either:
Have your student ride the team bus back to school, or
If you pick up your child directly from an event, coordinate with the coach or advisor regarding the bus's expected arrival time so they can let your child into the building.
Thank you for your partnership in keeping our students safe!

Beginning of School Year Reminders
Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures
Drop-Off: Please follow the street signs and directions of staff to ensure a safe and efficient process. We will all need to be patient due to the volume of vehicles. You can temporarily stop to drop your child(ren) on:
The West side of Cardinal Lane
The South side of Woodale Avenue
Either side of Jaymar Street
Please avoid using the parking lot to drop off your child unless there are medical reasons to do so.
Students being dropped off can enter Door 1 or Door 4 at 7:22 AM. Bike riders should use the bike racks near Door 4 and enter Door 4. Students can enter at 7:10 AM if eating breakfast.
Bus riders: You will enter and exit Door 8. These are the set of doors on the West side of the building facing the football field. You will be allowed in when your bus driver releases you. You can wait in the Fine Arts Lobby or the Galley, if eating breakfast, until the bell rings at 7:22 AM.
Pick-Up: Dismissal will begin at 2:40 PM. Again, please follow the directions of staff and be mindful of our students' safety. The same street parking as drop off can be utilized for pick up. If you need to enter the building, please park in one of our visitor parking spots near the main entrance (Door 1).
Dress Code Reminder
As a reminder, please ensure that your child is dressed in clothing appropriate for a school setting. Clothing should be comfortable yet modest, suitable for various activities throughout the day.
Cell Phone Policy
All student cellphones and personal devices (including home iPads) must be stored in lockers and turned off during the school day (7:30am–2:40pm). If you need to get in touch with your child during the school day, you may call the school office or send your child an email. Students will have the opportunity to check messages as appropriate. This ensures that important communication can still happen without disrupting the learning environment. Our complete cell phone policy is linked here.
E-Bike and E-Scooter Safety Reminders
E-bikes and e-scooters have become increasingly popular. To ensure the safety of our students, especially during drop-off and pick-up times on school property, we encourage students to walk their e-bikes and e-scooters.
As the district prioritizes safety of our students, we have developed a policy to maintain safe campuses. Of note, Administrative Policy 5514 states:
"The operator of a personal transportation device must observe all safety laws and rules, display courtesy and consideration toward others, and must abide by this policy as well as all laws and ordinances regarding the operation of the relevant device."
"Operating or bringing a personal transportation device on District property is a privilege and not a right. An administrator may temporarily or permanently revoke such privilege to the extent that a personal transportation device is operated in a negligent, reckless, or other manner that creates a risk of harm to the operator or others, or in a fashion that otherwise fails to comply with safety rules, laws, or ordinances."
"Upon the request of an administrator, the operator of an electronic powered transportation device will dismount the device and walk the device to the appropriate storage area."
STUDENT PICK-UP PROTOCOL
If you are picking a student up during the school day, you must come into the main office and sign the student out with your Driver's License. If someone other than you or your emergency contacts is picking up your student, please contact the office to let them know who is picking your student up. Students are not allowed to leave during school hours via bike or walking without prior approval from the main office and Principal.
HEALTH ROOM PROTOCOL
If your student is not feeling well, they need to follow protocol and come to the health room to report their illness prior to contacting home. Students should not be using their iPad to email a parent or texting a parent to pick them up. This will eliminate the spread of illnesses to other students and will make the office aware of students being picked up prior to parent arrival.

✍️ From Middle School Writer to Bestselling Author
Jennifer A. Nielsen has been creating stories for as long as she can remember. In fact, she began writing in elementary school! Her first attempt at a full-length story came in 6th grade, when she wrote about a girl who became trapped inside her own daydreams.
That story may not have become a bestseller—but Jennifer kept writing.
She filled spiral notebooks with stories, typed on an electric typewriter, created cartoons, and dreamed up new characters and adventures. Many of those early stories never made it out of a box in her closet, but they were an important part of her journey to becoming a published author.
Jennifer also grew up as a passionate reader. Some of her favorite childhood books included The Hardy Boys and Encyclopedia Brown, while one of her favorite junior high books was The Outsiders.
Her journey was not always easy. Her first book wasn't published—and neither were several of the books that came after it. But Jennifer continued writing, learning, and improving. Eventually, she discovered that the stories she most wanted to tell were for young adult and middle grade readers.
Her debut novel, Elliot and the Goblin War, was published in 2010. Just two years later, she released The False Prince, launching the bestselling Ascendance Series.
Jennifer's story is a wonderful reminder for our students: successful readers and writers do not have to be perfect when they begin. They grow by practicing, taking risks, learning from mistakes, and continuing to try.
We look forward to welcoming Jennifer A. Nielsen to Bay View Middle School on October 14!
📚 Reading Doesn't Have to Feel Like Homework
As students get older, it can become more challenging to encourage reading at home. Between sports, activities, homework, friends, and screens, finding time to read can be difficult.
The good news? Reading at home does not have to look like homework.
Encourage your child to read what genuinely interests them. Novels are great, but so are graphic novels, nonfiction, magazines, biographies, mysteries, adventure stories, and books about sports, animals, history, or other favorite topics.
A simple way to support reading is to ask:
"What are you reading right now?"
Then follow up with:
"What's happening?"
You do not need to read the same book or quiz your child about it. Simply showing interest in what they are reading sends an important message: Reading matters.
This month, challenge your family to find just a few minutes each day to read something enjoyable!
The Giving Tree

Student Services
A Message from our Bay View Student Services Team
Due to the increase in virtual counseling appointments scheduled during the school day, we want to make sure we can provide adequate private space. If your child will be having scheduled virtual sessions with an outside provider, we would like your partnership in obtaining a signed Release of Information in order to assist your child with any technology or connection issues that may occur during their appointments.
We ask that you provide at least a 3 day notice per each virtual appointment in order to ensure that we have adequate and private space available to your child. If you notify the school the day of an appointment, we cannot guarantee an adequate space or that the message will be received in time to call your child out of class. We know that many appointments are already scheduled, but if you are planning on scheduling future appointments during the school day, we would appreciate it, if possible, avoiding Monday appointments. We do not have the same spaces available as we do on other days. If you need help finding the best time for your child to have scheduled appointments, please don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your help and partnership.
