KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
I love school picture day – it was wonderful seeing all the students with their smiles ready for their photos! The students and staff not only looked great for picture day, but they also brought the fun and creativity to the Piggy Palooza dress up days, too! There was lots of red, white and blue, and Northwood swag on Monday. Tie Dye Tuesday brought lots of fun tie dye shirts and vibrant colors. Wacky Wednesday showcased creativity with hair styles and fun outfits. The 90s day was also a huge success! I loved seeing the music throwbacks, the Saved by the Bell patterns, neon colors, and lots of flannel shirts tied around waists – Happy 30th Northwood!
This week showcased so much fun school spirit! The dancing piggies and piglets, and our entire PTA are grateful for the participation and contributions. Final fundraising totals will be shared soon. Our PTA supports ALL Northwood students, families, and staff in creative and fun ways, but they couldn’t do any of it without your support.
Today, September 12, we celebrated National AVID Day. Ms. Evangelista, our CST, read two books to the students that focused on goal-setting and the message of being the best you can be. Our students will continue to learn and implement all the AVID strategies throughout the year both in their AVID special time with Mrs. Kaye, and in their classrooms.
Enjoy the sunshine filled weekend!
With gratitude,
Heather Q. Rucker, principal
KINDERGARTEN EXPLORERS
Kindergarten Meets Their 5th Grade Buddies: Our kindergartners had their very first meeting with their 5th grade buddies this week— and what a special moment it was! Each kindergartner was paired with an older student who will be their buddy throughout the year. They spent time getting to know each other through a fun buddy interview and even got to draw portraits of one another. It was heartwarming to see the smiles, excitement, and new friendships beginning to form. These special relationships will continue to grow all year long. We can’t wait to see the bonds strengthen each month. What a wonderful kickoff to one of our favorite traditions!
FIRST GRADE EXPLORERS
First grade has had so much fun diving into their learning. We love making 100's on iReady, showing off our math skills on our whiteboards, and always trying our best to be the awesome first graders we are!
NORTHWOOD MONTHLY AWARDS - AUGUST

GEORGIA READS DAY
Northwood is excited to celebrate Georgia Reads Day on Monday, September 22, 2025. It is a special day dedicated to sharing the joy of reading and helping our students grow into strong, confident readers. To mark the occasion, Mrs. Rucker will lead a special read-aloud, and each homeroom teacher will receive a copy of The Magician’s Hat, by Malcolm Mitchell, to add to their classroom library.
We’d also love to recognize our students’ reading adventures outside of school. Parents, if you'd like to participate, please share a photo of your child reading independently or with someone — or something — special, like a family member, pet, or favorite stuffed animal. These photos will be featured on our morning news show, Explorervision. Submit your Reading Photos Here!
Let’s celebrate the magic of reading—together!
AVID GOAL OF THE WEEK
Northwood is proud to be an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school. AVID Elementary equips students with the foundational skills and mindset needed for future success. Our staff is focused on enhancing instructional consistency, fostering a college and career readiness mindset, increasing student engagement and building organizational and study skills.
As part of this, each week Northwood will be focused on one goal as a school. Be sure to ask your child about it!
Next week’s AVID goal is: My goal is to use my best cafeteria manners (chew with my mouth closed, not talk with food in my mouth, not play with my food, and remain seated).
OPTIONAL DEVICE PROTECTION PLAN - DEADLINE EXTENTION
The sign-up window for families to add the Optional Device Protection Plan has been extended through September 26, 2025. After the close of the extended sign-up window families can still contact the Technology Support Center at 470-254-HELP (4357) to sign up for the plan.
Please visit the FCS Strategy and Technology webpage for easy access and resources.
OUR CLINIC CLOSET NEEDS CLOTHES
Accidents happen - in the classroom, at recess, at lunch or the bathroom. When our Explorers get messy they often head to the Clinic to get cleaned up. We keep extra clothes on hand for those quick changes. Our clinic closet is in need of boys and girls bottoms, but we appreciate all donations. If you have any clothing items you'd like to contribute you can send them in with your student or drop them off at the front desk. Thanks!
CAFETERIA NEWS
FREE AND REDUCED-PRICE MEAL BENEFITS
To continue receiving Free or Reduced-Price Meal benefits, each household must submit a new application every year. Meal benefits for the 2025-2026 school year will end on September 16, 2025, if the household has not reapplied by that date. If there is an interruption in benefits or no reapplication is received, the household will be responsible for meal payments until the new application is approved.
To ensure uninterrupted benefits, households must complete an online application by September 15, 2025, at www.myschoolapps.com, or submit a paper application to the school cafeteria manager before September 15, 2025.
NEW CAFETERIA PRINCIPAL ACCOUNT FUND
This year, with the new lunch system, our school community has the capability to create a Cafeteria Principal Account Fund. This account would be used to fulfill any meal costs for students that reach an account balance of zero. We often have families and extended family members that ask if or how they can pay off lunch balances or support our students in this way, now the process of doing so is easy!
Should you be interested in adding to the Cafeteria Principal Account Fund, just send a check or cash to school in an envelope to Ms. Bethany Lopez, Cafeteria Manager and notate that the funds go to the Principal Fund. Please reach out to Ms. Lopez lopezb3@fultonschools.org if you have any questions.
