Dear Nova Classical Community,

As we move into spring, we’re approaching an important milestone in our facility expansion. Construction is scheduled to begin in early April, with a small groundbreaking planned later today to mark this next phase.

In the coming weeks, families may begin to see construction fencing installed, followed by equipment arriving on site as excavation begins. We will keep our Nova Classical community and surrounding neighbors informed of any updates to traffic flow, pick-up and drop-off routes, and parking along the way. Our goal is to ensure students experience little to no disruption during the school day, with any updates to the existing building planned for the summer break.

We’ll continue to update the facility expansion webpage, and families are always welcome to reach out with questions.

While the building itself is fully funded, we’ll also begin sharing opportunities in the months ahead to support furnishings, equipment, and other elements that bring these new spaces fully to life.

This is an exciting step for Nova Classical and a meaningful investment in our students and community.

It’s a Great Day to be a Knight!

Dr. Brett Wedlund

Through conversation, reflection, and shared moments, the Class of 2026 continued building memories that will mark their final year at Nova. We’re grateful for the parents and staff who helped make this time possible and for the seniors who made the most of it.

Highlights from the March 30 Nova Classical Board Meeting:

  • The Board celebrated Dennis Barker with the Spotlight Award. Dr. Wedlund shared that when Coach Barker started coaching our varsity cross country team—he didn’t just build a program—he built a culture. His steady and purposeful development of students helped the team reach our first state championship and continues to foster an enjoyment of running in numerous students. The Board commends Coach Barker's work.

  • The Board completed the second half of the “Is It Virtuous” training, analyzing a case study aligned with ongoing staff cultural competency work.
  • Dr. Wedlund provided background on a forthcoming athletic conference decision. The Board will consider a proposal next month to leave the Skyline Conference and join the MCAA. He also reported that Nova Classical’s Mock Trial team won the state tournament and will compete at nationals in May, and he shared updates from the Minnesota legislative session.

  • The Board approved the FY27 budget, which is based on the revised FY26 budget reviewed at the March 19, 2026 special meeting. That meeting also authorized spending for critical expansion components. Key highlights included the new expansion lease, state funding adjustments, increased spending for the compensation model, higher compensatory aid, and increased athletic fees.

  • The Board received an expansion update. An informal groundbreaking for the new expansion was held April 2. Groundbreaking is expected to begin in mid-April, with excavation completed by mid-May, pending final permits. The current timeline projects completion of the skyway by mid-December, with tentative building occupancy at that time.

Elections for new Board Members are underway and nominations are being accepted for Board members for the July 2026 board cycle. Four parent seats are open. Feel free to join a meeting or connect with a current Board member if you would like more information on what Board service is like.

Upcoming Meetings:
  • The next regular Board meeting will be on Monday, April 27, 2026, at 6:00 PM. Please join virtually or at school.

For meeting minutes and agendas for upcoming meetings, visit the Board section of Nova Classical's website.

Board meetings are open to the public. All are welcome to attend meetings. We are also open to having Nova family members join our work groups. If you are interested in attending or joining a board committee those can be found here.

Dr. Brett Wedlund
To me, Nova Classical exemplifies how a school can deliver a great education to students by breaking away from the model that is often seen in traditional public schools. I'm proud to be part of a team that has created such a standard of excellence.

"Whenever you say 'yes' to something unimportant, you're saying 'no' to something important."
