Summit Scoop
Friday Fitness Fun!
The Kindergarten students at HHES participate each week in a perceptual motor event that is carefully planned and executed by our Kindergarten, Art, Music and Physical Education staff. From a student perspective this is one of their favorite things about Kindergarten, but the underlying mission is the motor development that is a crucial component in preparing for and succeeding in formal learning. Perceptual motor skills are the abilities that allow an individual to combine sensory input (such as what they see, hear, or feel) with physical muscle movements to interact with their environment. Key core components of the program include:
- Body Awareness (Proprioception): Knowing where your body is in space, identifying body parts, and understanding how they move.
- Spatial Awareness: Understanding how much space your body occupies and how it relates to surrounding objects or people.
- Directional Awareness: Recognizing internal and external directions, such as up/down, front/back, and left/right.
- Temporal Awareness: Processing time, rhythm, and sequence, which helps predict when a moving object (like a tossed ball) will arrive.
- Visual-Motor Integration: Coordinating what you see with fine or gross motor movements, essential for handwriting, drawing, and catching.
