Important safety information: When dropping students off at the playground end, please note that there is a designated drop-off area marked by the side of the playground fence and green cones. Vehicles enter the area following the arrows and drop off students between the cones and the fence. Students go directly to either the cafeteria for breakfast or one of the two front entrances. Vehicles immediately drive through and exit, alleviating congestion and keeping the area safe. If you wish to escort your child or wait and watch your child enter the school, you will need to find a parking spot. Please do not drop your child off before 7:50, as there is no supervision occurring prior to that time. Thank you for helping us keep all students safe.

Middle School Science-Ocean Currents
Our 6th and 7th graders braved the chilly temperatures to gather data at the North Boat Harbor, wrapping up our ocean currents unit with an unforgettable field experience! Students measured salinity and temperature at various depths, discovered fascinating marine life—including nudibranchs and sea angels—during plankton tows, and learned how a depth finder works from Mr. Tagaban aboard the Harbor Master boat. This hands-on adventure was not only educational but also a fantastic way to connect science to our local environment. Huge thanks to all the volunteers and the Harbor Master who made this field trip possible—we couldn’t have done it without you!

Congratulations to our Presidential Scholarship Candidates!!
Eleanor Kandoll
Elias Ward
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.
Congratulations to our two Petersburg students representing Alaska's candidates for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program!
PHS Art with Mrs. Lohr
Mrs. Wards Food Science
Mrs. Ward's Food Science Class had the incredible opportunity to learn from guest speakers Victoria Moore and Alex Helms, who shared their knowledge of traditional Native salmon harvesting practices. They introduced students to Indigenous teachings on utilizing the entire fish for various purposes, such as food, tools, and compost, emphasizing a deep respect for nature and sustainability.
During the hands-on demonstration, students learned how to fillet a salmon and prepare it using beach asparagus salt—a unique seasoning gathered from the shores of Southeast Alaska. Victoria and Alex also highlighted the cultural significance of salmon in Alaska Native communities, where it is not only a staple food but also plays an important role in ceremonies, storytelling, and art. This experience gave students a deeper appreciation for sustainable food practices and Indigenous knowledge, reinforcing the connection between food, culture, and environmental stewardship.
Mr. Owens Classes are Integrated and Active
Students in Mr. Owen's classes have designed a tiny home and, after having manufactured the trailer on which the home will sit, are in the process of building the home. Start to finish!
If they're not working on the home you'll find them working on engines or other creative engineering adventures!
