A Message from Superintendent Kramer
Hello TTUSD Families,
As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, it is a perfect time to reflect on the strength and generosity that define our school community. November is often celebrated as Gratitude Month, and I would like to express my deepest appreciation to each of you.
Thank you to our students for showing up ready to learn with enthusiasm and curiosity. Thank you to our families for partnering in your children's education and prioritizing attendance, making sure students are at school. I am also immensely grateful for our staff—our teachers, administrators, and support teams. Their energy and passion create exceptional places for our students to learn and grow.
I’d also like to extend a huge thank you to the Excellence in Education Foundation and every person who contributed to their recent "Support our Students" campaign. We were thrilled to learn the campaign raised an astonishing $56,990! This money goes straight into our TTUSD classrooms to enhance learning opportunities and resources.
It is this collective spirit that makes TTUSD a remarkable place to learn and work.
From all of us at TTUSD, we wish you and your loved ones a very happy and joyful Thanksgiving.
With gratitude,
Kerstin Kramer
Superintendent Chief Learning Officer
Strategic Plan Check-In
This month, in our Strategic Plan update, we’re highlighting work being done to make sure every student receives instruction designed to support their individual success.
Teaching Subject Matter and Language Skills Together (Action 1.1.2)
To deliver on this goal, we're adjusting how lessons are planned, providing teachers with tools to teach both subject matter (such as History or Science) and language acquisition (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) at the same time. This is part of our Integrated English Language Development (ELD) approach.
While this work applies to all grade levels, our focus in October and November was on high school. Over the past few months, our ELD Specialist has been working with content teachers across all three high school campuses to share best practices. As students progress into high school, they encounter subjects that contain complex, new academic vocabulary. This is why we say that all students are learning a new academic language. And while ELD strategies are critical for our English Learners, they also benefit all students by providing clear pathways to master this challenging content.
Boosting Confidence and Mastery for Every Student
The training equips teachers with research-backed strategies to level the academic playing field. The practices provide support for vocabulary and discussion skills, such as:
Diving into Word Understanding: Teachers are using a proven strategy to ensure lasting vocabulary understanding, not just memorization. Students first define a term, then identify its key characteristics, provide concrete examples, and list non-examples (what it is not). This strengthens comprehension and depth for all students.
Confident Class Discussion: We are using the Enhanced Think/Pair/Share strategy. Students first have time to think quietly to themselves and write down ideas, then discuss in a non-intimidating pair with one classmate, and finally share with the broader group. This process provides students with the support they need to articulate their thoughts confidently.
Ultimately, by integrating content and language strategies, our teachers are working to create a more equitable, effective, and successful learning experience for every student in the classroom.
Gearing Up for Winter | Your Guide to Snow Days
As snowflakes arrive, here’s a reminder about school schedule changes due to weather. Our priority is always the safety of students and staff. We have multiple options to navigate challenging conditions, including:
Full Snow Days: School is closed, and regularly scheduled activities are canceled.
2-Hour Delayed Starts: School starts 2 hours late, with regular dismissal times.
Minimum Days: Schools are on a regular minimum-day schedule.
How the Decision is Made
We understand that changing school schedules significantly impacts our families and working parents—it is a decision we never take lightly.
The decision process is challenging because our district covers 723 square miles. We also have to consider I-80 closures—many of our essential staff travel from Reno—and the fact that, as an open-enrollment district, buses and families are on the move across long distances within our region, allowing students to attend their school of choice.
Our Snow Watch Committee meets early in the morning to review data from CHP, Caltrans, the National Weather Service, and staff who are checking roads and campuses. We use all this information to make a final decision by 4 a.m., ensuring our bus drivers have enough time to clear snow, chain up, and get on the roads safely.
Stay Informed!
We strive to announce schedule changes by 5 a.m. through various channels:
Phone calls, emails, and text messages
TTUSD website and app
Social media (FB and IG: @TahoeTruckeeUSD)
And don't forget to review our Bus Stop Safety Reminders to ensure everyone is safe while traveling to and from school, especially in winter conditions.
Here's to a winter filled with learning, fun, and lots of snow (on the weekends)!
Celebrating Growth: TTUSD CAASPP Results and Our Path Forward
The Spring 2025 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results, one piece of data integrated into the California School Dashboard, were recently released. These results, reviewed at the November 5th Board Meeting, indicate our targeted supports are working, and TTUSD students are showing strong momentum.
What We See: Key Wins in Math and English Language Arts (ELA)
More students are meeting or exceeding standards across the board:
Math Growth: Overall proficiency increased by 3 points (to 52%), with strong gains in 4th and 7th grade.
ELA Success: Overall proficiency is up by 2 points (to 62%). A huge shout-out to our 11th-grade students, who achieved a remarkable 7-point jump in ELA proficiency!
Signs Our Support is Working
We are especially encouraged that our supports are reaching students who need them most:
English Learner Progress: The percentage of our English Learners progressing at least one full level on the English Language Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC) increased from 35% to 37%.
Targeted Success: The number of students scoring "far below" standard is decreasing across the district, including a significant 7-point decrease for Students with Disabilities in ELA.
Commitment to All Students
While we celebrate this progress, we’ll remain focused on narrowing the achievement gap between our overall student population and key subgroups, including English Learners and Students with Disabilities.
Where We Go Next
Our action plan is focused on empowering our educators and providing personalized support:
Personalized Support: We are using powerful diagnostic tools, like the newly implemented iReady, to make sure students receive the right support at the right time.
Curriculum Focus: We will continue strengthening instruction and support for our new math curriculum.
We encourage all families to watch the full presentation for deeper insights and watch the December 17th board meeting to hear Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, Mrs. Roderick, share information on the full CA Dashboard results.
Recognizing Our Fall Sports Academic Excellence
Congratulations to all of our fall student-athletes for a successful season! Their commitment to balancing athletic performance and academic achievement is truly commendable.
A special celebration goes to the teams honored by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) for achieving the highest team grade point averages (GPA) within their divisions. We want to recognize these state academic championship awards equally to any athletic championship awards, strongly reinforcing that our competitors are students first, then athletes.
Congratulations to the following teams for their top academic rankings!
North Tahoe High School Academic Champion Teams
Girls Cross-Country, 1st Place
Football, 3rd Place
Truckee High School Academic Champion Teams
Girls Cross-Country, 1st Place
Boys Cross-Country, 2nd Place
Football, 1st Place
Girls Soccer, 1st Place
Boys Soccer, 2nd Place
Girls Tennis, 1st Place
Girls Volleyball, 2nd Place
Well done, everyone. We look forward to your continued success in both the classroom and in competition.
Celebrating Our School Psychologists | Helping Students "Find Their Path"
During the week of November 3rd through 7th, 2025, TTUSD celebrated National School Psychology Week! This year's theme, "Finding Your Path," highlights the essential work our school psychologists do to connect students with the resources and support they need to succeed.
As recently recognized by the TTUSD Board of Trustees, our school psychologist team plays a key role in helping students thrive in school, at home, and in life. They use specialized training and evidence-based, data-driven practices to offer a range of comprehensive mental health and academic supports. Their focus is on nurturing individual strengths, ensuring school safety, and reducing barriers to learning, ultimately guiding every student toward their unique path to success.
Please join us in showing our deep appreciation for these dedicated professionals!
A huge thank you to our outstanding School Psychologists: Dana Adams, Laura Burley, Meagan Cohee, Hannah Hargrave, Whitney Lewis, Kelly McKurtis, Alex Weedman, and Jordan Wolf!
Attendance Balance | Your Quick Stay-or-Go Symptom Guide
Our fantastic nursing team is working hard to keep students healthy, and your partnership is key! We understand the challenge of balancing your child's learning with the need to prevent illness. Knowing when a cough or sniffle requires a day at home can be a tough call, but making that informed decision helps prevent the spread of illness across our campus.
To help, our nurses created suggested guidelines on when your child should stay home and when they are well enough to attend school. Please take a moment to review the graphic below. We appreciate your partnership in making informed health decisions for your child and our entire school community!
Meet Our New Substance Use Navigator (SUN)
Exciting news for student support! TTUSD is thrilled to welcome Shannon Decker as our new Substance Use Navigator (SUN)! Ms. Decker, a mental health educator, will bring expertise from her current role as Executive Director of the local non-profit, The Speedy Foundation, to this part-time position.
The new grant-funded SUN position will strengthen our student safety net by providing a specialized focus—proactively preventing substance use, delivering early interventions, and seamlessly connecting students to specialized care when they need it most.
How the SUN Supports Your Student
The SUN is a confidential resource designed to serve as a bridge between schools, families, and community supports, helping ensure students receive timely, coordinated, and compassionate care.
Students are encouraged to reach out if they have concerns about themselves, a friend, or a family member. The SUN can help with:
Guidance and Education: Addressing questions about substances, peer pressure, coping skills, and harm reduction.
Support and Connection: Connecting students with the right resources and support when they need it most.
Additional Needs: Providing a safe space if students are seeking information, looking to make positive changes, are returning to school after time away, or simply need someone to talk to.

Positively Rolling | Building Character, One Skateboard at a Time
Positively Rolling is not your average school activity—it's a unique 5-week workshop dedicated to boosting confidence, supporting social connections, and encouraging self-expression among our 7th-grade students!
This hands-on program uses skateboard art and guided discussions to create a fun and open space for exploration. Students dive into themes such as community building, acting with integrity, and learning from both success and failure. The goal is to empower students with a resilient attitude and the confidence to celebrate who they are.
Thank You, Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation
This work is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation (TTCF). We are deeply grateful for their generous $5,000 grant for the 2025-2026 school year, which supports staffing and materials that make this workshop possible. Thank you, TTCF, for your investment in the well-being of our students!
Nourishing Our Neighbors | The Gift of Hunger Relief This Holiday Season
The holiday season reminds us of the importance of connection and nourishment. Many local families face unexpected hardships, making it difficult to guarantee a well-stocked pantry at home. Our partners, the Sierra Community House (SCH)—the only food pantry in the North Tahoe–Truckee region—are actively working to bridge this gap. They currently serve over 700 families each week, including many in our TTUSD community.
How to Give: Strengthen Our Community
Your contribution ensures every neighbor has access to nutritious food this winter.
- Cash Donations are Preferred: Cash donations allow SCH to purchase significantly more food at a lower cost, stock exactly what is needed, and serve families most efficiently. Donate now to their Virtual Food Drive!
How to Receive Help: Food Distributions
If you or someone you know is facing hardship, free and confidential food assistance is available through SCH with no requirements for ID, proof of income, or other documents.
Weekly food distributions are held across the region:
Truckee: Tuesdays, 1 pm - 5:30 pm, SCH Warehouse
Kings Beach: Wednesdays, 3 pm - 4:30 pm, SCH Office
Incline Village: Thursdays, 2 pm - 3:30 pm, St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church
For more information and details on home delivery services, please visit the Sierra Community House website.
Together, we can strengthen our community and ensure that everyone receives the nourishment and support they need.
Warmth & Wonder | The Truckee Community Cares Toy & Coat Drive
This holiday season, make a difference in the lives of local families, seniors, and individuals through the Truckee Community Cares (TCC) annual giving campaign. TCC, an all-volunteer nonprofit, coordinates this to make sure every child and neighbor has essential items and a gift to open.
Help Local Families
TCC is specifically seeking new toys and gifts for teens, as well as gently worn adult and children's coats and jackets.
Drop-Off Locations: Toy and coat donation bins are available at locations around town through December 11th. Visit truckeecommunitycares.com for the full list of drop-off spots.
Financial Support: Financial contributions are also welcome, allowing TCC to purchase items efficiently.
Last year, TCC supported over 285 families. By contributing a coat or a toy, you are directly supporting our neighbors who need a helping hand this holiday season.
