Athletics Update from Pat O'Neill
The 2025–2026 winter season was an outstanding one for Ellington High School Athletics, highlighted by historic accomplishments, team success, and continued growth across our programs. Throughout the season, our student-athletes represented Ellington with pride, resilience, and sportsmanship, while competing at a high level both in conference and postseason play.
This winter included several major milestones for our athletic department. Our boys swim program completed its first season, marking an exciting step forward for Ellington athletics and creating new opportunities for student participation and growth. In indoor track, our boys team captured the NCCC Championship, and Ellington’s 4x800 relay qualified for nationals, an impressive accomplishment that reflects the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes and coaching staff. In addition, Jenna Luoma became the first Ellington High School student-athlete to win multiple State Open championships in the high jump, a remarkable achievement and a historic moment for our school.
Our gymnastics team finished third in the state, capping off an exceptional season. The program also had multiple student-athletes qualify for New Englands, continuing a strong tradition of excellence and high-level performance.
On the basketball court, our boys basketball team won the NCCC regular season championship as well as the NCCC Tournament championship. Our girls basketball team has also advanced to the state tournament quarterfinals, reflecting the strength and competitiveness of both programs this winter. Julia Laughlan and Ashton Walder are this year's Scholar Athletes.
Beyond these accomplishments, this season continued to showcase the value of athletics in developing leadership, accountability, teamwork, and school pride. Our student-athletes and coaches worked hard to build positive team cultures and represent Ellington High School in a manner that reflects the values of our community.
I would also like to thank our coaches, athletic trainer, game workers, facilities and custodial staff, administration, families, and community members for their continued support throughout the winter season. Their time, dedication, and partnership are essential to the success of our programs.
As we transition into the spring season, we are proud of the momentum created this winter and look forward to continuing to build strong, student-centered athletic opportunities for Ellington High School students.
