8th Grade Students & Parents: Academic Blueprints

On Wednesday, March 8, the high school gifted education specialists met with identified gifted Noble 8th graders. During this time, each student completed an "Academic Blueprint" of their high school career. The blueprint is just a plan and was done in pencil so that adjustments can be made accordingly as they advance through high school. Below is a link to a document with potential course sequencing suggestions for AIG students. This week and next, I will be meeting with students who did not complete one or are newly identified to get these completed.

Chess Tournament - May 13th

Greetings Students and Families!

I would like to cordially invite all interested students, 8th grade and below, to come play chess with us on May 13, 2023! My name is Adam Saucerman and I have started a chess club at Providence Preparatory Academy and over the past 2 years have continued to grow and connect our little chess players here in Wilmington and surrounding areas through some chivalrous competition. Our last tournament was a huge success with representation from 16 schools and about 60 of the brightest minds in the area gathering to exercise their mental prowess as they battled it out over chess boards. We are super excited for this tournament as we hope to see folks from neighboring cities coming out and joining this fun event. We will be hosting this end of school year tournament at First Baptist Activity Center here in Wilmington, NC. I know spring is a busy time for everyone, but I hope you don’t let your little chess players miss this event!

Saturday, May 13, 2023

First Baptist Activities Center

1939 Independence Blvd, Wilmington, 28411

Check-in will start at 9:45am so as to give folks from distant surrounding areas time to arrive.

I ask that folks pre-register so we have a clear head count before hand. We are expecting/hoping for an even bigger turnout and our venue will have limited space so PLEASE PRE-REGISTER.

I ask that if you have a regulation style board or clock and are able to bring this please let me know before hand so that we make sure we have extra boards and clocks at the ready if needed.

There will be children potentially as young as kindergarten up through 8th grade attending. I encourage all parents to stay for the event, but I will require any children 3rd grade or less to have a designated guardian present during the event. We will have volunteers with background checks as well as parents present during the event to help monitor the children and make sure they do not leave the grounds unless checked out by their guardian.

I do not want to charge for any event, but will request a 10 dollar admission fee to simply help cover the facility fee. If this would prohibit your child from coming we would rather wave the fee and give your child the chance to play.

The time control for these games will be 15 minutes. This is relatively short and falls more into the category of rapid as opposed to classical chess, but we have found that quicker games keep the kids very engaged and provides opportunity to play more games throughout the day. We also have activities going on in the gymnasium in between games to keep the day exciting both mentally and physically.

Cell phones will not be permitted to be out during the event. They will not be out before or after the games. If your child needs to reach you during the event they can have one of us help them do so. If you are not present and would like to reach your child during the event we will give a contact number at check in to reach us.

Children are obviously not permitted to cheat or use electronic devices during the event. This will not be tolerated in any way and will likely bar your child from being asked to come back to future tournaments.

Children must remain respectful of the volunteer leadership at all times. If a child does not respect the volunteer leadership and officials they will be asked to leave or be removed from the facility

For anyone interested in joining us please email me your Name, Child's name, current school or homeschool group, phone number, and grade. If your child does have a current USCF number or rating please include this also. If there are any teachers or schools that will have one individual taking the role as guardian for multiple students that is also ok. Just make sure to indicate this in your email. If you simply have questions please feel free to email or text me as well.
