DEAL MS LIBRARY NEWS!
November 2026
What's going on in the library?
Greetings Families,
We are beginning the 2nd term already! The year seems to be moving along quickly with the winter holiday season fast approaching. The library will be submitting the yearly budget this month for our annual May/ June book order. I always rely on student and teacher recommendations when I put together our list of new titles to order each year. This year, I am sharing a link to the library's book recommendation form for families to engage with the process as well! See the link below if you would like to make some recommendations for the library. I try to honor all or most of the reasonable requests that meet our age range and curricular goals. I will also be publishing a list next month of the most requested and popular titles of the year for families looking for gift ideas or a great read for the upcoming breaks. See the list below or click on the image to be directed to the book recommendation survey:
Book Recommendation Form - Make suggestions for new books for the Deal Library!
Please help to support Deal and the Deal library at the Politics and Prose Alice Deal Book Fair on November 15th or online by using the wishlist link below.
On November 15th, the school community is invited to shop at all three Politics and Prose locations, and the store donates 20% of all pre-tax IN STORE sales made by the Deal community to the school. (Gift certificates, special orders, new member signup/renewals, and coffee house items are excluded).
If you choose to purchase for the library, you can ask the cashier to hold the books for the school to pick up or you can deliver donations directly to the main office at Deal. You can inform the office staff that you are donating books for the library. I am extremely grateful for any donations! We have 1500 students and one May book order. We lose a lot of books each year and this will help us keep some very popular titles in stock for our students.
Library overdue notices to go out this week!
We are at that time of year when students need to return library books. Notices will go out to families this week. Students who have borrowed books for 30days or more will receive notices. There are no fines, but students can only have items removed from their accounts if they reach out to Mr. Reichlen. Please reach out with additional questions.
Tenley Teen Librarian visiting Deal this week!
Our local Tenley / Friendship teen librarian Brandon Digwood will be visiting Deal this week to talk to kids about programming, book check-out, and to answer any questions students may have about DC Public Library.
Here is a sample of November programming at the DCPL Tenleytown branch and messaging from Brandon:
" The Teen Choice movie for this month will be Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle. I will also have participation prizes I’ll be handing out during my gaming programs on the 3rd and 17th as part of International Games Month."
Book Recommendations and LibGuide
Mr. Reichlen creates a new display of book recommendations each month. Also, students and families have the opportunity to make featured recommendations for the library displays by filling the linked form: https://bit.ly/DealMSLibraryRecommend
For November, the Must Reads list focuses on new YA and middle grade fiction and nonfiction by Native American and Indigenous authors and subjects. Celebrate Native American Heritage month by reading one of these great books!
More information about the Must Read lists and digital resources on the web at the Library's LibGuide Page: https://bit.ly/DealMSLibGuide
- A libguide is a public facing website that provides additional information for the library, reading recommendations, monthly news and themes, ELA resources, and research help and tips! The libguide is curated and managed by Mr. Reichlen. Please reach out if you have additional questions or comments.
Give additional feedback using the Deal Library Survey Form:
The SORA app is located in Clever, the DCPS hub for digital learning. Students have access to thousands of e-books, audiobooks, interactive readers, and magazines! New titles are added on a regular basis. Students can access SORA through the app available for iOS, Kindle, and Android platforms in addition to accessing through the web. DCPL DATABASE ACCESS VIA CLEVER
The DC ONE Card was retired by DCPS on September 30th. DCPS students historically, used the DC One Card to access many of the DCPL databases available to them via Clever. This applies to apps specifically found in the "Library Resources" section of Clever. This includes:
The Washington Post Archive
DCPL Go Digital
Brainfuse Homework Help
JSTOR
GALE
BookFLIX
and any other app containing DCPL or DC Public Library in the title.
DCPS students will now use:
Username: DCPS{StudentID}
Pin: StudentID
For additional information, refer to the Student Access FAQ.
Students will have to choose to update their login in Clever with the above convention. For example if a student's ID number is 1234567 the username will be: DCPS1234567. They may also have to input this login when they are redirected to the DC Public Library website again. See the Student Access FAQ above for more info or reach out to me if you have additional questions. These are all great apps for research and personal use. Students also have the ability to check out physical books from DCPL with this account as well which they will have to retrieve from a branch of the public library.
Library Checkout Policies
Students at Deal will be checking out books during the month of September during our beginning of the year library orientation. Students are allowed to have up to 5 books out at a time and will begin to receive overdue notices after 30 days. Mr. Reichlen sends out two emails to families per year. One will go out before the winter break and one goes out at the end of May or early June. There are no fines for lost or damaged books but books that do not get returned will end up on the student's record through high school unless the student or family communicates with Mr. Reichlen. The library will also accept donations of new or gently used hard cover books published within the last 5 years and age-appropriate for 6th grade students. Students will never be disciplined for lost materials and it will not affect future checkouts as long as Mr. Reichlen is notified. To read the full library policy document, click on the image.
