Berry Families,

This week, we began putting our focus on the idea of small, consistent changes—the 1% improvements that, over time, lead to something much bigger.

The two changes

  • We are walking responsibly and safely in the halls, showing respect and self-discipline.

  • We are no longer bringing toys to school, as they have become a distraction from our main purpose—learning and growing.

These may seem like small things. And they are. But that’s the point. Small changes, done consistently, begin to shape culture. Think about it—schools with uniforms don’t magically have higher achievement because of the clothes themselves. Teams don’t win games just because they wear the same jersey. But those things create a sense of unity, identity, and shared purpose.

At places like the Air Force Academy, even something as simple as how shirts are folded is measured and practiced with precision. That doesn’t directly improve reading or math—but it builds discipline, consistency, and pride.

That’s what we are building at Berry. We are building a culture where students know what is expected, where they feel safe, where they can focus, and where they can grow. A place where habits support learning, not distract from it.

As Dr. Pilar Vargas shared this week at the Community School Summit: “We are trying to create a legacy without our name on it.” That really stayed with me. What we are building here at Berry isn’t just for today. It’s for every student who walks through our doors now—and in the future. It’s something that can outlast all of us.

And that starts with small steps.

Consistent steps.
Shared steps.

I BELIEVE!

Do you BELIEVE?

Mr. Prosapio

Principal, Berry Elementary School

Pasos constantes.

Pasos compartidos.

¡YO CREO!

¿Y tú, CREES?

Families. Testing continues THIS WEEK. Please help our students keep those good habits. They can just get some extra sleep, get up and eat breakfast (or come to school slightly early and get free breakfast here. help them remember to focus and just give their best effort. All of these things are important.

However, YOU are responsible for your children. We are seeing more and more children running around and pulling on trees, climbing around and jumping on top of the picnic tables. These are all very unsafe and could lead to accidents. Please, while you are waiting and visiting have your children play in a safe and responsible way on the grass.

Berry Community Schools Update

We are excited to share some of the amazing work happening at Berry through our Community Schools efforts!

Learning & Growing Together
Last month, a team of Berry staff, parents, and community members attended the CABE Conference in San Francisco. This opportunity, supported by our Community Schools grant, allowed us to learn new ways to better support our students and families. We brought back ideas focused on belonging, strong family partnerships, and systems that help every student succeed no matter where they go.

The Berry Den (Room 4) is Growing!
We are currently redesigning the Berry Den to better serve our families! This space will include:
• Family resources & information
• A welcoming meeting/training area
• A kids’ corner
• A space for volunteers

This is your space! Please stop by, share your ideas, and let us know what you would love to see in the room.

Here to Support You
If your family needs support such as school supplies, clothing, food, or housing resources, please stop by the Berry Den. If we don’t have what you need, we will help connect you with community partners who can.

• How to talk to your child about health and growing up
• Navigating conversations about drugs and making safe choices

We appreciate your honesty and partnership as we work to bring these important resources and trainings to our Berry community.

Ongoing Learning
Our Community Schools team continues to grow! Mr. Prosapio and I attend monthly trainings to strengthen our work and bring even more resources and support to our Berry families.

Health Services at Berry
Last month, we partnered with the San Ysidro Health Mobile Unit to provide free vaccines on campus—thank you to all who participated!
