At Viz Whizz Dogs, we say it often because it matters: we educate, we don’t breed. But part of that education is helping our community understand what responsible breeding truly looks like and why it plays such an important role in the long-term health and future of our breed. This special edition is dedicated to the breeders who are doing it right.

Behind every thoughtfully planned litter is a breeder who prioritizes health, temperament, and lifelong responsibility. These are breeders who complete (OFA/CHIC) testing, carefully select pairings, raise puppies with intention, and stand by every dog they produce, for life. They are not just bringing puppies into the world; they are protecting and preserving the Vizsla breed we all love.

In a time where it’s easier than ever to find a puppy with a quick online search, it’s also easier than ever to make the wrong choice. A well-bred puppy doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from patience, transparency, ethics, and a deep commitment to the breed not convenience or profit.

In this issue, we’re proud to highlight a small group of responsible breeders with upcoming litters who meet the standards we advocate for. These are breeders we trust to do right by their dogs and by you. Whether you’re ready for a puppy now or just beginning your research, our goal is to give you the tools, knowledge, and connections to make an informed, responsible decision.

Why buying responsibly is the single biggest thing you can do to reduce dogs in rescue. Do your own research and ALWAYS reach out to local rescues for references. Every backyard breeder survives because people keep paying them! Don't trust any Facebook groups without reviews, or speaking to the person and never ever send a deposit without talking to & verifying the breeder.

Breeder Red Flags Checklist

Before you buy a puppy, especially from AKC Marketplace- If you see any of these, walk away.

1. “AKC Registered” is their main selling point. Being AKC registered only means paperwork, not quality, ethics, or health.

2. No proof of health testing. A responsible breeder will provide:

• OFA results (hips, elbows)

• DNA test results relevant to the breed

If they say “vet checked” instead of OFA/DNA

3. Always has puppies available. Ethical breeders usually have waitlists, breed infrequently, do not advertise “ready now” constantly. High availability = high volume.

5. No lifetime return policy. A good breeder will ALWAYS take the dog back at any age if life circumstances change.

6. No involvement in: Performance sports / Field work / Conformation / Or breed clubs

Breeding without purpose = breeding for profit.

7. Claims club memberships they can’t prove. We regularly see breeders claiming to be part of clubs they are not members of. Always verify independently.

8. Pushes deposits fast. Pressure tactics = sales tactics. Ethical breeders want the right home, not fast money.

9. Bad reputation in rescue circles. If rescues recognize the kennel name… that’s not a good thing.

10. Golden Rule: If a breeder’s entire credibility is “I’m on AKC Marketplace” run. That’s advertising, not accountability.

Congrats to all the runners! At the Boston Marathon, our Viz Whizz crew returned for year FOUR in Natick, welcoming runners with what we do best… puppy kisses, wagging tails, and nonstop encouragement. There’s something so special about watching runners light up the moment they see our Vizslas. The pause. The smile. The kisses. That quick reset before they keep pushing forward. It never gets old.

To our amazing volunteers, Robert, Dan, Jeannette, and Vizslas Lolli, Ruby and Charlie and to our host Cathi Collins, thank you for showing up and continuing this tradition! And to the runners… thank you for letting us be a small part of your big day. Same place next year? We wouldn’t miss it.
