Rushmore, Wright Brothers Earn Governor's Science of Reading Champion School Designation

Rushmore and Wright Brothers Elementary Schools were both recently named Governor's Science of Reading Champion Schools by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.

The award recognizes the schools' commitment to providing every student with high-quality literacy instruction aligned to the Science of Reading. Both HHCS schools will receive a banner to recognize this achievement.

There were 109 schools statewide that earned Science of Reading Champions designation in 2025-26. The other three elementary schools in the Huber Heights district earned this award in 2024-25.

"I am continually inspired by the hard work and dedication our staff brings to improving literacy in Huber Heights City Schools," said Shalen Back, primary curriculum supervisor in the HHCS Department of Curriculum and Instruction. "I truly love this district, and it is a privilege to work alongside individuals who care so deeply about our community and remain committed to supporting every student’s literacy journey."

Rushmore and Wright Brothers earned this award by meeting state standards that include teacher training, skills assessments and measurements to inform instruction and intervention, progress monitoring, building-level team meetings, and a local literacy plan.

As part of the application process, the schools had to submit an individual success story. Wright Brothers told the story of Harley, a kindergarten student under teacher Sheri Weaver in 2024-25 who made remarkable progress in her early literacy skills. Harley increased her mClass DIBELS Diagnostic score by 189 points and moved from well below benchmark to meeting grade-level expectations. When Harley entered kindergarten orientation, she could not identify any letters or sounds; however, by the fourth quarter Interim, she was confidently identifying all letters and sounds and reading and writing CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) and digraph words.

March Staff Member of the Month: Kristen Amburgey

Social studies teacher Kristen Amburgey has been an educator at Wayne for 24 years. She attended Huber Heights City Schools from kindergarten through high school. "It is great to teach at the same school I attended," Amburgey said. "I have had the opportunity to work with some of my former teachers. It is special to be able to work alongside the educator and administrators who influenced my life.

"I also get to work with some of my former students. I learn new teaching strategies from them. I love learning from students and hearing their ideas. It is great getting to know them. Every day brings something new. I am at the point in my career where I have some of my former students' kids. It is a full circle moment, to be able to teach their kids!

"We have amazing students and staff at Wayne. We are doing great things here. I love that I get to be a small part of it."

Third Quarter Hardwork Cafe

Weisenborn will have its third and final Hardwork Cafe of the year April 9–10. This quarterly PBIS incentive rewards students for their hard work in the classroom and great behavior throughout the building. Students attending have earned a 3.75 GPA as well as having zero discipline referrals. Please remind your students to check their email after spring break for their invitation if they have earned this recognition. We look forward to rewarding these students, as we have had over 300 students earn this recognition during the first two quarters of the year. Great job, Warriors!

CH Students Join Team Tressel Fitness Challenge

Charles Huber students in grades 3–6 are taking charge of their health! Physical education teacher Stephen Hall has enrolled students in the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge, a 30-day program that empowers young learners to set personal fitness goals, track their progress, and build lasting healthy habits around physical activity, nutrition, and sleep.

What makes this challenge extra special? The program connects schools with former collegiate and professional athletes who serve as "Challenge Buddies," visiting to share their expertise and inspire students. In March, we were thrilled to welcome three impressive speakers:

â—Ź Josh Copeland, former University of Buffalo football player

â—Ź Donnie Evege, Wayne High School graduate and former Ohio State University football player

â—Ź Chris Wright, former NBA and University of Dayton basketball player

Each athlete shared valuable insights on healthy eating, fitness, physical activity, and the importance of proper sleep—reminding our students that taking care of your body is a winning strategy both on and off the field!

The Team Tressel Fitness Challenge is led by Lieutenant Governor and former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel.

VIP Dances Bring Out the Family Glow

On March 13 and 14, the gym was transformed into a glowing wonderland with vibrant decorations that set the perfect mood for dancing and fun. Students brought their VIP (Very Important Person) guests to share in the excitement, creating a wonderful opportunity for families to connect and celebrate together.

Whether dancing under the neon lights, enjoying time with friends, or cheering each other on, students had an unforgettable experience both nights. The "Glow in the Dark" theme brought out everyone's enthusiasm and spirit.

A huge thank you to our dedicated PTO volunteers who put in the time and effort to create such a memorable event. Their hard work behind the scenes—from planning to decorating to coordinating logistics—made these dances possible and gave our students memories they'll treasure.

Kindergarten Students Celebrate 100 Days of School

Charles Huber's kindergarten classrooms have been buzzing with learning and growth. Students recently celebrated their 100th day of school with a special day filled with number-focused activities. The children strung 100 colorful Fruit Loops into necklaces, created vibrant gumball machines filled with exactly 100 gumballs, and—their absolute favorite—built impressive towers and structures using 100 cups! As students look ahead to spring, they are equally excited about their classroom caterpillars and can't wait to witness their amazing transformation into beautiful butterflies.

Learning Adventures Include Camp Kern, Carnival

Monticello has been full of adventure recently. Our fifth-graders braved the cold at Camp Kern—tackling egg-drop challenges, stepping back to 1810 Ohio, and even making ice cream by hand (freezers suddenly feel like a luxury!). Back at school, students showed off their Portrait of a Warrior traits by designing and running a full carnival for younger students complete with teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving. Would your egg survive the drop? Could you handle a one-room schoolhouse? At Monticello, learning is hands-on, memorable, and always a little more fun!

Rushmore Classes Enjoy Hands-On Cooking

Some of our classes at Rushmore Elementary participate in hands-on cooking activities throughout the school year. These activities help students learn important skills by doing and experiencing tasks in a fun, meaningful way. Students work together to follow simple recipes and practice measuring, counting, reading directions, and teamwork. Some of the activities include making apple pies, pumpkin pie in a cup, homemade ice cream, and other seasonal treats. The hands-on experiences help students build independence, practice life skills, and enjoy learning in an engaging environment.

A Wedding at Valley Forge!

In a delightful celebration of literacy, kindergarten students at Valley Forge recently gathered to witness the "wedding" of the letters Q and U.

The unique ceremony is a hands-on phonics lesson designed to help young learners remember a fundamental spelling rule: in the English language: the letter Q is almost always followed by the letter U. During the "nuptials," students acted as witnesses as the two letters "vow" to stay together forever to create the /kw/ sound found in words like queen, quiet, and quack.

The event featured many traditional wedding elements, including:

  • The Vows: The letters promised to be inseparable through "quicksand and quarrels".
  • The Outfits: The bride, “Miss Q," wore a soft white veil while the groom, “Mr. U," opted for a black vest and tie.
  • The Reception: Following the ceremony, the students hosted a festive reception where they enjoyed punch and cookies while celebrating the new couple.

This imaginative tradition continues to be a favorite at Valley Forge, turning a complex spelling rule into a magical and memorable experience for the school’s youngest students.

Wright Brothers Elementary School Wright Brothers Elementary School

Message from Principal Angela Harris

March was a great month at Wright Brothers! We’re feeling proud of all the learning that took place across our classrooms. We also had some fun along the way. Our PTO hosted a fantastic Donuts with Dad event, and Student Council brought an exciting visit from the Columbus Zoo right to our students.

Now we’re heading into April and the start of state testing for grades 3–6. We’re confident that all the hard work from both students and teachers will pay off, and we’re excited to see our students show what they know. After a well-deserved spring break to rest and recharge, it’s go time!

I’m so proud of the growth our students have shown this year and can’t wait to see them shine!

Second Grade Civil War Dodgeball

Second-grade students recently completed Unit 9 in CKLA Knowledge, the Civil War. Students were introduced to events that led to the war. They also learned about notable people who were important during that time. For a culminating activity, students enjoyed a version of “civil” war through dodgeball! Students were divided to two sides and played four friendly rounds of the game.

Students reviewed important terminology before each round and we even had a Clara Barton, a nurse who aided the North during the war. During dodgeball, one girl would tap any student who got out on the North so they would go back in!

March Excitement Includes Family Engagement, Candy Sale, and Therapy Group

March was an exciting month at Studebaker! We kicked things off with our annual spring PTO fundraiser, a World's Finest Chocolate candy bar sale. Our top candy sellers earned several fun prizes, including the chance to Silly String the principal! Three students even had the opportunity to spend 30 seconds in the Cash Cube. Congratulations to Zaine, our top seller, who sold an impressive 15 boxes!

We also enjoyed a fantastic family engagement event at Capabilities, an indoor play park designed to accommodate children of all ability levels. Capabilities offers a variety of stations, including several swings, climbing apparatuses, ball pits, and sensory toys.

In addition to these activities, the preschoolers participated in an engaging occupational and physical therapy group. This session, inspired by the beloved book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, focused on fine motor and gross motor skills as well as color-matching.
