Fire Drill

Thank you for practicing and preparing your students for our first fire drill.

  • The students did get out of the building in under two minutes.
  • Encourage students to walk with purpose as they exit without running.
  • If you feel you were going out a door that was too congested, please see Mallory for a map so that we can update your exit.
  • Be sure you have an updated copy in the office, in your sub folder, and in your emergency envelope that hangs by your door.
  • Our next drill will be on Tuesday at 9:30.
  • Please continue a normal day until you hear the alarm. It can be a bit tricky to start the alarm, and I don't want to waste your time if we are a few minutes late.

Supervision

Our families are counting on us to keep their students safe. In today's world, they are watching our safety protocols carefully. It is important that we:

  • supervise and monitor ALL parts of the playground
  • spread out during morning duty and recess duty (if you are with someone else)
  • check to ensure gates are closed
  • teach our students which door to enter and exit when on time and when late

As importantly, remember to show our students we care about them by taking time to listen to student concerns, problem solve and teach. This is how we build trust and relationships, which, in turn, have a positive effect on behavior.

Kindness Club Help

We are searching for a partner to help Melaina with Kindness Club this year. Please consider helping her out with this v.i.p club.

Checking In--Monthly Appointments

I would love to set up a time to meet monthly with staff. If you have a time that works for you, please see me so we can set up a recurring monthly appointment. This will give us time to stay in touch regarding students/families, develop and work on a plan around your yearly goal, and learn, grow, and support each other!

As we build our collective efficacy together, we will no doubt see a dramatic impact on student achievement!

Volunteer Opportunity with FIRST LEGO League Program

Hi everyone,

Please see the message below from Morgan Brunsting, our new Robotics Coordinator. Morgan is extremely knowledgeable, passionate, and ready to serve our students and families. Please join me in welcoming her to SJPS!

Hello SJPS Staff!

If we haven’t met before, my name is Morgan Brunsting, and I am the Robotics Coordinator for SJPS!

We are looking for staff volunteers to help with our FIRST LEGO League (FLL) program for Kindergarten to 5th grade! Check out the Parent Website for more information on the program.

Our parents are helping to facilitate small group discussion and many of them do not have experience or strategies (as teachers do) with helping guide learning for small groups. Groups have one or two grade levels (if there are two grade levels, they are consecutive) and between 5-8 students. The role of a floater would be to walk around to the small groups and model for parents guided questioning and if needed behavior redirection. These strategies come naturally to most teachers.

Meetings will be on Mondays-Thursdays from 4:45-5:45 for K-3 and 4:45-6:30 for 4-5. This is also an opportunity for you to connect with your students in a setting other than the classroom as well as experience what FIRST Robotics is all about!

Please let me know if you are available and interested. Commitments can range from one time to a few times a week, whatever your schedule allows! Read more about the teacher role (Floating Mentor) to learn more about the meeting flow and expectations.

Thanks for your support of SJR (St. Joe Robotics)!

Educationally Yours,

Morgan Brunsting

What Does a Positive Discipline Class Meeting Look Like?

What Does a Positive Discipline Class Meeting Look Like?

by Jane Nelsen, co-author of Positive Discipline in the Classroom Many teachers use circle time, morning meetings, or what they may call class meetings. Most of these meetings are "teacher generated." In other words, the teacher decides what should be discussed or follows a program with suggested topics designed to teach children about these topics.
