Info and thoughts for Class of 2021

SBHS CounselingNewsletterInfo and thoughts for Class of 2021

This is not what we planned for, so now what.....

As we head into April break, I have heard from many of you who are asking "what will I do over break with no school work?" You've watched all of Netflix, cleaned your room for the first time in three years, baked a few dozen cookies, watched too many hours of Tik Tok videos, walked, run, exercised, so now what? Well first, keep doing some of those things, but unplug from school, maybe try something new we've included here and spend some time considering what comes next. To that end, we have put together a variety of info and resources in one place so spend some time here and come back as needed. You are worth it.

Virtually Possible, Locking Down the College Search in a Global Pandemic

There is a lot of information out there for juniors and families who suddenly find themselves trying to figure out how to search for colleges from home. This article is written by one of my go-to admissions professionals and I feel like it is the most comprehensive I have found.

Summer Dual Enrollment

Vermont public high school juniors and seniors are all eligible to access two college courses with tuition fully reimbursed through a voucher system. Juniors who are interested in taking a summer course should check out offerings at UVM, CCV, St. Michael's College,

At this point, all three colleges are offering their summer courses fully online.

Dual Enrollment Voucher and course registration is a multi-step process

1. Students must apply for a Dual Enrollment account here

2. SBHS approves the account and students receive an email (to their SB email address) with account verification steps.

3. Students log in to their account and request a voucher for a specific course and section

4. SBHS approves voucher requests and students receive an email with the approved voucher number.

5. Students then "register for the course" at the specific college, using the voucher number.

College Admission Testing

We have heard from many juniors and families who are concerned about the loss of SAT and ACT testing opportunities this spring and the impact that will have going forward. The bottom line there continues to be a great deal of uncertainty around this, like so many other college admission-related issues.

Here is what we do know: as of 4/15, over 1130 four-year colleges/universities in the US have instituted test-optional admissions policies for the class of 2021 and the list grows each day. Fair-test.org provides the most up to date and comprehensive list of test-optional colleges and universities.

We also know that the College Board (SAT) has now officially canceled June 6 testing and has added a September test date, so there will now be 5 potential SAT test dates in the fall (August, September, October, November, and December). The ACT has not yet canceled the scheduled June 13 test but it is likely they will. Future ACT test dates include July, September, October, and December.

As always, please breathe and rest assured that our admissions colleagues never make decisions based on a test score, your performance in school and the content of your character are the keys to your future success.

NCAA Eligibility in response to COVID-19/ Remote Learning

Student-Athletes who are interested in playing Division I or II sports in college may be wondering how remote learning and changes to SBHS grading policy might impact their NCAA eligibility. The NCAA response updates can be found here and counselors and students are being reassured that the NCAA is working to respond with eligibility changes coming soon.

VSAC offering
