🐝 The Hawthorne Hive Weekly Buzz

Greetings Hawthorne Hive Families! 🐝

We extend our sincere appreciation to our PTA for generously providing lunch for our staff on Friday. Their efforts help ensure that Hawthorne remains a place where both students and staff feel valued and encouraged.

We are also proud of our Hawthorne Elementary School Dance Team. Under the leadership of Ms. Massey and Ms. Culliver, our dancers earned 3rd Place in Area 1 and 7th overall in the district. We are incredibly proud of their dedication and hard work and the staff who supported them at the Area 1 Finals: inclusive of Mr. Barnes, Ms. Shegog, Ms. White, Ms. Lester, Ms. Wyatt, Ms. Martin, Mrs. S. Jackson, Ms. McKandes, Mrs. King, and Ms. Washington.

We would also like to thank the families who came out to support their 2nd and 3rd graders during last week's concert. Your presence and encouragement helped make the performances even more special for our students.

A special thank you to Mrs. Kim for leading a wonderful 2nd and 3rd Grade concert. Our students did an outstanding job showcasing their musical talents through singing, bell choir, and speaking roles. We also appreciate our teachers, Ms. Pope as well as Mr. Hodges, Ms. Culliver, Ms. Famularo, Ms. Martin, Mrs. McCoy, Ms. Edenfield, Ms. Sprauve, and Mrs. White - for supporting students both before and during the performance, helping to make this a memorable experience for our families.

As we begin Week 25, we hope our Hawthorne families had a wonderful and restful February Break. We are excited to welcome our students back and look forward to a strong continuation of the school year filled with learning, growth, and meaningful experiences. Thank you for your continued partnership and support!

This week we look forward to seeing you at our Scholastic Book Fair, which will be open from Tuesday, February 24th through Friday, February 27th, and at our African American History Program on Friday, February 27th at 9:00 AM. Subject: Student Assignment Project Scenarios and Opportunity for Feedback

I understand how personal this conversation is because our schools are more than buildings; they’re communities, memories, and milestones for our families. Here’s what you should know about the scenarios and the process:

  • At this stage, no decisions have been made.
  • The scenarios being discussed are a starting point for feedback.
  • This feedback phase will continue through May.
  • The feedback collected through our survey will be used to reiterate and then release new scenarios for community feedback.
  • Just because a school is or is not impacted in this first round of scenarios doesn’t mean that won’t change in the second or third rounds.
  • Final recommendations are not expected until late 2026.
  • There will be no changes for the 2026–27 school year.
  • Any approved changes would be phased in over 6–8 years.
  • During this process, every school may be impacted in some way, which is why your voice matters so much.

I encourage you to review the information and FAQs available on the SAP website, visit the links below, attend an upcoming community meeting, and share your feedback via the SAP Scenario Survey.

Thank you for engaging in this important work for our students and our future.

Attendance Contest Updates

📣 Second Semester Attendance Challenge: Your Presence Is Power! 💪

From January through April, Hawthorne ES is participating in a districtwide attendance challenge that encourages students to show up, stay engaged, and finish the school year strong. Led by our very own Attendance Avenger, students will enjoy grade-level activities, school spirit events, and friendly competitions that celebrate the importance of being present every day.

We are especially excited because Hawthorne ES won the district attendance contest last year—and this year, we’re aiming to do it again! Our district is closing in on its strategic goal of 95% attendance, and your continued partnership plays a vital role in helping us reach and maintain that goal.

🌳 February Attendance Celebration
Throughout the month of February, we will celebrate daily student attendance by adding leaves to our Attendance Tree each day students are present—watch it grow as our commitment to showing up grows too!

Let’s keep the momentum going! Just 5 minutes a day of logging your child’s reading on Beanstack can help us climb even higher on the county-wide leaderboard!

📚 Here’s how you can help as a parent:

  • Encourage your child to read daily and log their minutes in Beanstack, every minute counts!
  • Parents can track progress and celebrate milestones together with their children.

See video from our DCSD Board Chair Mrs. Allyson Gevertz below, together, we can build a powerful culture of reading at HMES, one page at a time! ✨

The drop-off times in front of the school are below:

7:00 am

MORNING INTERVENTIONS & EXTENTIONS TIME DAILY - 7:15 am

Tardy bell - 7:45 am

Morning announcements begin at 7:45 am

Car riders:: When picking students up, parents should have the Hawthorne ES Car Rider Tag visible in their car. If the Car Rider Tag is not visible, parents are required to park, come into the building and provide Identification. Thank you for your patience as we simply want to keep your students' safe.

The pick-up times for dismissal are below:

Bus riders-2:25:pm; Car riders 2:35 pm (front of building after buses) & walkers (Side door)

Walker Dismissal Protocol Update
The dismissal process for the Walker group is being slightly adjusted to ensure a smoother and more secure experience. Students will continue to dismiss from the side door; however, we will now be implementing a numbered tag system.
Each walker will be assigned a unique number. Parents or guardians must walk to the designated walker door and visibly display their child’s assigned number. This number will correspond to the student’s walker tag, which will be attached to their backpack.
For safety and accountability, students will only be released once the matching number is presented at the door.

Attendance & Dismissal Procedures Update

To ensure accurate attendance records and to maintain a safe and orderly school environment, we are updating our arrival and dismissal procedures:

  • Late Arrival: Students arriving after 7:45 AM must be checked in by a parent/guardian inside the school office.

  • Early Check-Out: If a student needs to leave school early, parents/guardians must come into the building to sign the student out prior to the start of dismissal.

These updates are in place to support accurate attendance documentation. We appreciate your cooperation and commitment to helping us ensure that your students are safe during arrival and dismissal from school. 😊Thank you!
