Write OutsideYour DoorWriting Contest for Youth and Adult Writers
Go outside. Be inspired. Be creative. Write. Submit.

Write Outside Your Door is a free writing competition co-sponsored by the Missouri Botanical Garden and Gateway Writing Project that authentically integrates creative writing into the science and English language arts curriculums. Write Outside Your Door invites Missouri students from grades K - 12 and adults to write about their experiences outside, with nature, and as stewards of the environment.

Writers may submit stories, essays, or poems that address:
- A special place in nature and why it is meaningful
- Describes an author's specific experience in nature
- A piece that reflects conservation, stewardship, or sustainability

Stories and essays should be 1,000 words or less & poetry should be 3 - 30 lines

Entries will be judged on content (how well the theme has been addressed), voice (word choice and style), and merits of composition (grammar and organization). All winners will receive an Emerging Writer’s prize pack and have their work displayed by the Missouri Botanical Garden.

Please provide submission information using the submission form link below and attach a file of the writing. Deadline for submissions is Monday, May 8th of 2023 with winners being announced on Friday, May 19th of 2022. Contact Gateway Writing Project with questions at gwp@umsl.edu
