Featured Event: LSHS Commencement Ceremony
Press Release
Lake Shore High School will celebrate its 103rd commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 30th, 2026, conferring requirements on 202 graduates.
This year’s keynote speaker is Janelle Reiff. Janelle graduated from LSHS in 2019. Since then, she has gone on to graduate from Western Michigan University and is currently serving as the reigning Ms. St. Clair Shores.
“For 103 years, the Lake Shore community has trusted us to educate their children,“ said Lake Shore High School Principal Dr. Janelle Bross. “It is not a commitment we take lightly. Graduation is the culmination of years of hard work from students as well as teachers and families. This year and every year is a celebration for not just the students, but the entire community as well.”
Administration, teachers, and staff will create an experience for our Seniors and families that also includes the following:
• Seniors and family members will receive a graduation program.
• Bagpipe entrance with music performances from our band and choir students.
• Students will cross the stage in red with white arm striped gowns and receive their diploma cover.
• Professional photos taken by Stewart Photography will be available on his website.
• Families will be able to enjoy the entire ceremony together live using the following link.
Cheers to OVER 100 Years, Lake Shore! Once a Shorian, Always a Shorian!
Featured Story: A True Hero Walks the Halls of LSHS
Dave Dell, Our Shorian Hero
Dave Dell is simply incredible.
We see his kindness, friendliness, and willingness to help every single day as he keeps our LSHS community safe, but one week ago, he went above and beyond in the most critical way.
When a Lake Shore High School student began choking in the cafeteria, Dave sprang into action and performed the Heimlich maneuver, quite literally saving a life.
When asked about the incident, he humbly said, “I was in the right place at the right time.” He explained, “I was helping clean tables between lunches and visiting with the special education students when I noticed something was off and immediately took action.”
His attentiveness, compassion, and quick response made all the difference. Dave is a true hero, and we are incredibly thankful for his calm actions and caring heart.
Dave is part of our District Safety Team from Fortis Group, Michigan’s leading protection, investigation, and training firm, bringing decades of law enforcement experience to our schools. After retiring from a remarkable 30-year career with Oakland County law enforcement, Dave joined Fortis more than a year ago and has continued his commitment to serving and protecting others in our school community.
Beyond his role at Lake Shore, Dave is a devoted family man — happily married to his wife, Cassi, and proud father to 11-year-old LJ and 9-year-old Harlow. His experience, compassion, and quick actions continue to make a lasting impact on those around him.
Fortis Group’s School Safety Division was created to meet the need for a higher level of school protection—combining a friendly, welcoming presence with the vigilance needed to help deter crime and violence. Their team offers a wide range of customizable services to help protect students, staff, visitors, and property.
Mr. Carney, LSHS MOCI teacher, shared:
“Anytime I call for help, he comes—no questions asked. Many mornings, he’s assisting with food service deliveries, moving boxes, and stepping in wherever needed. He truly represents the gold standard for this role and exemplifies it in every way.”
We’re proud to continue our partnership with Fortis Group and School Resource Officer Detective Glen Hartman as we work together to keep our schools safe.
Real heroes walk our halls every day.
Bonus: Lake Shore High School students recently took part in a powerful and eye-opening assembly presented by Fentanyl Fathers, an organization dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and counterfeit drugs. Through personal stories and real-life experiences shared by families impacted by fentanyl poisoning, students gained important information that could ultimately save lives.
Lake Shore is grateful to bring programs like this to our students and encourage open conversations that help keep our community informed, aware, and safe.

A Full-Circle Shorian Moment
5️⃣0️⃣ Lake Shore proudly kicked off its new-ish tradition (2nd year!): Meet at the 50! 🏈
🔗 https://x.com/myLSPS/status/2052029960672452947
Our amazing Class of 2026=200+ seniors met the bright and excited Kindergarten Class of 2038 at the 50-yard line for a truly unforgettable, full-circle moment. From first day nerves to graduation dreams, this event beautifully symbolized the journey of a Shorian.
At midfield, seniors signed shirts, while kindergarteners gifted “Once a Shorian, Always a Shorian Friendship” bracelets (sponsored by Michigan Insurance and Financial Services Gives Back program!)—reminders that the bond of Lake Shore lasts a lifetime. 💫
Through our strong partnership with the Positivity Project, LS-branded red ducks (yes, the plastic kind!) were also given to every kindergartner, encouraging them to capture and share their Shorian adventures over the next 12 years.
✨ Once a Shorian, Always a Shorian ✨
There were so many touching moments—especially seniors connecting with family members and those families celebrating generations of Shorians. Sean Bratten, Kindergartener at Violet Elementary embraced Expedito Rivera III, Senior at Lake Shore High School. Yes…there were definitely some happy tears!
As we continue Employee Appreciation Week, we also recognize the incredible staff who help shape these journeys every day. Your impact makes moments like this possible—thank you for everything you do!
🎬 Bonus: A special group of seniors and kindergarteners helped bring our upcoming senior video to life—you won’t want to miss it!
👏 And of course, THANK YOU to our staff, transportation team, maintenance, band (played Thanks for the Memories by Fall Out Boy!), cheer, and Media Productions for making this event happen…plus a little help from that perfect 50 degree Michigan weather!

Spread the word — share with friends and family!
Exciting things are happening at the ECC! We are preparing for our move into the new Early Childhood Center, and we are so excited to begin this next chapter with our families.
Current ECC families — mark your calendars!
The ECC will be closed June 21–July 3 as we pack and prepare for the transition to our new building.
Our grand reopening at the new center is scheduled for July 6th! We can’t wait to welcome everyone into our beautiful new space.
Enrollment Update
Enrollment for our new Early Childhood Center is now fully online!
Step 1: Current Family Applications
We are currently accepting applications from our current ECC families. This first step timestamps your application and helps us better understand your care schedule needs. Our team will do our very best to accommodate each family’s requested schedule.
During this process, we are carefully building classroom rosters while ensuring we meet all licensing ratio requirements and staffing needs. By the end of May, all current families will have their schedules confirmed.
Step 2: Online Paperwork
All required enrollment paperwork and documents will also be completed online. While it may feel like a lot at first, moving to an online system will greatly reduce how often families need to complete paperwork in the future.
What’s Next?
Once current family applications are processed, families on our waitlist will receive an email with Step 1 instructions.
After that, enrollment applications will open to the public.
We are working hard behind the scenes to streamline our systems so families have clearer communication and know exactly when openings become available.
Thank you for your patience, support, and excitement as we grow!
Care Solace

Visit www.caresolace.com/lsps: On their website, you can explore mental health providers independently or click "Book Appointment" for personalized assistance through video chat, email, or phone.
By joining hands and working together as a community, we can provide a nurturing and inclusive environment that supports the mental health and well-being of our youth. Let's continue to prioritize their emotional growth, and together, we can create a brighter future for our children.
Thank you for being caring and involved parents and guardians in the Lake Shore Public Schools. Your dedication to supporting our youth is truly commendable.

Positivity Project
P2 Calendar
Under the guiding principles of our districtwide initiative, the Positivity Project, the #PositivityInAction mindset is our top priority. Because of our goal to inspire students to build positive relationships and become their best selves, we invite you to follow this Positivity Project Calendar.
This calendar outlines all 24 character strengths, 1 highlighted per week. Our teachers create engaging and impactful lessons — differentiated by grade-level — and share through presentations, student recognitions, classroom discussions, and building-specific displays.
People with the character strength of enthusiasm approach life with excitement and energy. They energize people around you.
In celebration of Employee Appreciation Week (May 4–8), we were proud to honor the Lake Shore staff members who go above and beyond each day and recognize the people who truly keep Lake Shore running.
Superintendent Dr. DiPonio shared:
“It goes without saying that a single week cannot fully represent the admiration and appreciation we have for you. My years in education have taught me a handful of indisputable truths, the clearest of which is this: it is always the people, never the programs, who determine success. Simply put, you win with people. Lake Shore is next level. The care, devotion, and commitment you show each and every day are extraordinary, and they do not go unnoticed.”
- Thank you to our community businesses for helping recognize Employee Appreciation Week by displaying our branding on outdoor signs throughout St. Clair Shores.
- Thank you to our Management Team for the branded Once a Shorian, Always a Shorian popcorn tins and MJR movie cards. Our appreciation is truly popping! A special shoutout to Carlos Silva (Atlantic Can) and Matthew Campbell (MJR) for their outstanding collaboration.
- Thank you to our building principals for thoughtfully planned luncheons celebrating our staff later this week.
- Thank you to our 5th-, 8th-, and 12th-grade students who will be honoring their favorite staff members with carnations.
- Thank you to our entire community for the many extra touches throughout the week that help make our staff feel valued and appreciated.
- A special shoutout to Ms. Kleymeer's Help Desk students and Mr. Carney's MoCI students at LSHS for their help with organization & distribution.
Dr. DiPonio continued:
“As we celebrate one another this week, I encourage you to take a moment to thank our operations and maintenance teams; custodial and food service staff; secretaries and transportation teams; teachers, support staff, administrators, safety and student support teams; paraprofessionals, aides—every individual who plays a role in helping Lake Shore succeed. You are the reason. You are the difference-makers. You are deeply appreciated.”
Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate Outro Week - Other People Matter which will take place during the week of May 18-22.
Stay Safe
OK2SAY Student Safety Program
See something? Say something.
OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at school students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Anyone can report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees, or schools. Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While continually evolving and reviewed annually, on this Safety and Security webpage you will find a list of recent and current safety measures implemented by Lake Shore Public Schools to provide the safest environment for our students and staff.
Inspiration
Celebrating the Staff Who Shape Every Shorian Story
At Lake Shore, our love for teachers is always in bloom! 💐
Since 2016, our seniors have proudly walked the halls of every LSPS building—revisiting their roots and inspiring younger students along the way. It’s a full-circle moment filled with pride, memories, and so much love from families, friends, staff, and the community. Once a Shorian, always a Shorian
This year, we continued the tradition during Employee Appreciation Week with a heartfelt gesture: 5th, 8th, and 12th grade students presented red carnations to a staff member who made a lasting impact on their journey. These moments of gratitude remind us just how powerful those connections truly are.
We also joined the reels trend with “Give this to a teacher who…”—and let’s just say, choosing only one wasn’t easy! We'll share the video next week!
We can’t wait to see which staff members our Lake Shore High School seniors honor with a carnation during the Senior Walk on Thursday, May 28. 🌹

Innovation
From Idea to Appreciation: A Popcorn Tin Story
What started as a simple idea turned into hundreds of smiles across Lake Shore! Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how our Employee Appreciation Week popcorn tins (exclusive only to LSPS employees) came to life:
November/December
The idea popped just in time for the holidays! We partnered with Conlon Installations for custom stadium artwork and secured a vendor for our custom tins. With support from our district business office, the plan was officially in motion.
January
Over 500 tins arrived—and our incredible M&O team jumped in to help unload and organize. MoCI students stepped up (as they always do!) to count and sort tins for each building, while the LSHS Help Desk team assembled thank-you tags with care.
February
We added a little extra fun—partnering with MJR Theatres to include movie gift certificates for staff to enjoy!
March
With guidance from our amazing Food Service Director, Tina, we finalized the popcorn order through Gordon Food Service—making sure every tin would be filled to perfection.
April
Assembly time! Tins were filled, packaged, and delivered to buildings across the district in preparation for the big week. LSHS MOCI students & Food Driver Susan Pugliano handled the heavy lifting and we couldn't be more grateful!
May
The best part—handing them out to our staff! A small token of appreciation to recognize the BIG impact our team makes every single day.
And let’s be honest… the real MVP? The tins! Long after the popcorn is gone, they’ll be living their best second life as cookie stashes, mystery junk drawers, or that one place you swear you put something important.
Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this happen—and to our staff, who deserve all the appreciation (and snacks)!
Now we’re already dreaming up 2027…
Kindergarten Orientations
Kindergarten Orientations for the Class of 2039 are now underway across the district!
Violet Elementary hosted their event this past Thursday, with Masonic Heights and Rodgers scheduled to hold theirs on Tuesday, May 19th.
These orientations are designed to help families and students ease into the transition to Kindergarten. The events provide opportunities for children to meet fellow incoming Kindergarteners, explore the school environment, and participate in engaging activities with teachers. Parents receive helpful resources to support learning at home, can share contact information with other families, and gain valuable insights into our schools and what to expect this fall.
Enrollment for the 2026–27 school year is now open, including at the new Lake Shore Early Childhood Center—a place many of our soon-to-be kindergartners began their learning journey.
Lake Shore is a place where possibilities are endless, and a Shorian education is truly life-changing.
Celebration
A Magical Encore: Lake Shore Students Bring Frozen to Life with Community Spirit
Huge thanks to Lake Shore Public Schools for treating elementary students and American House residents to a magical matinee of Frozen!
Theatre Director Raymond Filipek and the talented LSHS musical theatre students wowed audiences with Rock of Ages in January. Now, they’re back and captivated us once again with their production of Frozen.
Young Anna and the chorus was brought to life by Masonic Heights 5th graders Philly Iraci and Aubree Vermillion, who shared their excitement about the production as they sat in the audience.
“Everything is magical,” they said. “Backstage can get a little crazy, and the only thing that isn’t magical is the quick changes! But Elsa’s magic, the lighting, memorizing lines, making the audience happy, and harmonizing during the opening song make it all so special.”
The excitement spread throughout the audience as well. One 3rd grader shared, “This is my first time ever watching a play, and I’m so excited!”
A resident from American House was also thrilled to attend the performance. She proudly shared that two of her nieces graduated from Lake Shore and are now in their 50s.
Rodgers’ formal Spirit Day was the perfect fit for such a magical occasion, with many students dressed in beautiful gowns inspired by Elsa and Anna.
LSHS Secretary Sylvia Srebernak enjoyed the special performance alongside her grandson, Jonathan Carrier, a 3rd grader, making the day even more memorable for their family.
Decision Day 2026
The big day has arrived! Decision Day 2026 is here.
After years of hard work, determination, and big dreams, the Class of 2026 is taking the next step.
Athlete Signing/Decision Day, celebrated on May 4th & May 15th, marked the exciting moment when high school seniors officially commit to their postsecondary plans—whether college, career training, or beyond—celebrating their next big step after graduation.
With the support of our incredible college advisor, Ms. Gillis, every LSHS senior heading to college has secured at least $8,000 in scholarships and grants—with some earning more than $200,000! We love celebrating our seniors!
The Athletic Department at Lake Shore High School, alongside proud families, coaches, and administrators, recently honored its 10 college-bound student-athletes with an unofficial letter-of-intent signing celebration.
This special event allowed family and friends to witness and share in the excitement as Athletic Coordinator Mr. Bowers interviewed every student-athlete. He asked two key questions: What inspired your decision to attend and compete at your chosen college? and What advice would you give to others?
According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), only about six percent of high school athletes nationwide go on to compete in any NCAA division. We are proud to recognize these outstanding members of the Lake Shore High School Class of 2026 who have reached this remarkable milestone.

Bonus: Kendra Damm's PSA called "More Than Your Feed" won the Hidden Gem Award at the Detroit Teen Truth Film Festival. This is an award for a film that, though it didn't win by score, staff all agreed absolutely deserves recognition. This accomplished student from Lake Shore High School gets a trophy and a $250 cash prize from the YMCA.
Congratulations to this year’s girls KMS track team on an incredible season! The Clippers have now earned four straight league championships and have finished undefeated for the third consecutive season.
